Week 5: Marshall vs Gardner-Webb 10/1/22 College Football Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Marshall Thundering Herd and Gardner-Webb Bulldogs do battle Saturday in week 5 college football action from Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs will look to rebound from a 45-14 loss at the hands of Mercer last time out. Bailey Fisher led the Bulldogs with 123 yards passing, with a touchdown and an interception on 14 of 20 passing while Jalin Graham rushed for a score and Jayden Brown had a team-high 22 rushing yards. T.J. Luther led the Bulldogs with 7 catches for 100 yards and a touchdown while Cutrell Haywood also had 5 receptions for 48 yards in defeat.

The Marshall Thundering Herd will try to bounce back after a 16-7 loss to Troy in their last game. Henry Colombi has thrown for 737 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on 75.5% passing while Khalan Laborn has a team-high 540 rushing yards and 6 scores this season. Caleb McMillan leads Marshall with 171 receiving yards while Talik Keaton and Corey Gammage each have 100+ receiving yards as well on the year. On defense, Charlie Gray has a team-high 29 total tackles while Eli Neal and Abraham Beauplan each have 28 total tackles with Neal logging 15 solo tackles. Damion Barber and Sam Burton each have a pair of sacks as well this season for the Herd.

Gardner-Webb is 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games following a loss and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss by 20 or more points while the under is 3-0-1 in their last 4 games overall. Marshall is 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games following an ATS loss and 8-24 ATS in their last 32 home games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 home games.

I get the case to be made for Marshall laying the big number here, but I want no part of the Herd after what we’ve seen from them in recent weeks and I truly don’t trust Gardner-Webb enough to take a shot with the points here. Instead, I’m going to look at the under as I just don’t see either side doing enough or caring enough (more so on Marshall’s end) to push this one over the number. Give me the under here.
