Army’s 2022 campaign started out with a tricky matchup versus Coastal Carolina. The Knights lost that one 38-28, but were closer in game two during a 41-38 overtime loss to UTSA. Army finally got a win in game three 49-10 over Villanova.
In the Georgia State game, the Knights were down 17-0 going into the third quarter and eventually lost 31-14. QB Cade Ballard was 1-of-7 for just 11 yards and a pick. Tyhier Tyler led the rush with 110 yards and two scores on 19 carries.
Over on the Wake Forest side, they managed a 44-10 win over VMI in their opener, then took a 45-25 win over Vanderbilt. The Deacons had a scare versus Liberty in a 37-36 win in game three. Wake took their first loss of the year the next week, 51-45 against Clemson in OT.
Matched up against Florida State, the Deacons scored 14 in the second and put up points in every quarter during a 31-21 win. QB Sam Hartman logged 234 yards with two scores, and Justice Ellison finished with 18 carries for 114 yards and a TD.
PICK: I’m staying with Wake. The Deacons did a good job against a talented Florida State team over the weekend, posting 405 total yards, 28 first downs and a nice 10-of-18 run on third downs. Wake Forest benefitted from 11 Seminoles penalties, but they also held the ball for 34:32 and committed zero turnovers.
As for Army, this past weekend’s loss wasn’t pretty. The 11 pass yards were low even for them, and the three turnovers certainly didn’t help. The Knights are going to need an extra dimension to cover here, and I don’t think they have it right now.
