Fantasy Baseball Daily: Checking in on the noteworthy names

July 31, 2013

See the Latest Odds

We’re seeing some unusually lengthy series' across the MLB this week, which means it’s a pretty busy time in fantasy. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the noteworthy storylines out there and see what the key players are up to this morning. Here’s the latest.

Matt Kemp, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers: As of a couple days ago, Kemp was still locking in on a potential August 4 return. With this new information, however, that seems like it could be pretty difficult. He’s reportedly only been able to support 20 percent of his body weight while working out on his injured ankle. Kemp did some hitting off a tee yesterday, but it’s tough to imagine he’ll be ready to go when he’s first eligible.

That said, it’s a sprain--not a break--so he should be able to get back in there relatively soon. We’ll keep you posted.

Shin-Soo Choo, OF, Cincinnati Reds: Now let’s move on to another ankle injury. Choo sat out two games with a minor ankle sprain of his own, but he was able to make a return yesterday against San Diego. Unfortunately, Choo went 0-for-3 and his ugly slide at the plate continued. He’s now 0-for-10 in his last three games. The Cardinals come to town this weekend.

Freddie Freeman, 1B, Atlanta Braves: Freeman had himself a (pretty unexpected) breakout at the plate yesterday against Colorado. He homered twice on his way to a 2-for-4 line that produced three runs and four RBIs. That’s three straight games with hits for Freeman. He’s now got 13 homers on the year, with 69 RBIs, 57 runs and a .301 BA to go along with them.

Carlos Quentin, OF, San Diego Padres: Let’s return to the Reds-Padres game for a moment and take a look at Quentin. He injured his knee in the sixth inning after going 0-for-2 and came out of the game. That comes after Quentin missed Monday with a “tweak” in his knee. He’s currently listed as day-to-day, but this will definitely affect his status as a trending waiver wire name in fantasy. Think twice about an add.

Kenley Jansen, RP, Los Angeles Dodgers: Jansen didn’t get a save, but he nabbed an even rarer win last night against the Yankees. He tossed a clean ninth, striking out a pair of batters and bringing his record to 4-3 on the year. It’s now been five appearances since Jansen has allowed a hit. He’s got 14 saves, 74 strikeouts, a 2.15 ERA and 0.88 WHIP through 54 1/3 innings this season. Not too shabby.
