Fantasy Baseball Daily: Checking in on Kemp, Gordon and more
August 2, 2013
Now that the work week is almost at an end, it’s time to set our sights toward the weekend, and more specifically the weekend series around the MLB. The upcoming games will provide plenty of fantasy intrigue as well, so with that in mind let’s check in on some of the noteworthy happenings on some of the key players. Here’s the latest.
Alex Gordon, OF, Kansas City Royals: We haven’t checked in on Gordon in a while, so let’s see how he’s doing. Yesterday was a good day for him, as he went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run against the Twins. That makes a four-game hit streak for Gordon, and in that span he’s tallied seven hits, five runs and a homer. Starting today, he’ll be in New York to take on the Mets.

Matt Kemp, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers: It’s been a frustrating week for Kemp, and thus his fantasy owners as well. While it was initially believed he’d need the minimum amount of time on the DL for his ankle injury, Kemp has yet to resume any baseball activities and is healing much slower than the team anticipated.
Now there’s talk that he may not even be ready until September, which is a crushing blow for Kemp owners, but not a totally unexpected one. He’s been on the DL three times this year, and has been a massive disappointment as a first-round pick. We’ll keep you posted on his recovery.
Troy Tulowitzki, SS, Colorado Rockies: Tulowitzki had an interesting evening last night against the Braves. He was tossed out of the game for arguing balls and strikes after going 0-for-2 with a pair of Ks. Tulowitzki has now gone hitless in his last four games after hitting in five of the previous seven. He’s hitting .236 since coming off the DL and will try to get things turned around in a road series against the Pirates today.
Alex Rodriguez, 3B, New York Yankees: The Rodriguez soap opera continues to get juicier. He and the league are reportedly still very far apart in brokering an agreement concerning his suspension from the Biogenesis connection. Meanwhile, Rodriguez is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment today.
Fantasy-wise, the whole thing’s been a real mess--and he’s just the tip of the iceberg. Eight other players are expected to be suspended in connection with this investigation, and their sentences will be announced within the next few days. Stay tuned.
Jake Peavy, SP, Boston Red Sox: Peavy is scheduled to make his Red Sox debut tomorrow against Arizona, and if he can carry some of his recent success with him into his new zip code, he’ll be just fine. Over his last two starts, Peavy is 1-0 with 10 Ks through 13 innings. He has allowed six earned in that span, however, so he’ll need to clean that up if he wants to keep it going. He’s 8-4 on the season and should improve thanks to the help he’ll get as part of the Red Sox. Start him with confidence in fantasy.
