Around here, Friday means it’s time once again for our biweekly waiver wire updates, so settle in if you’re in need of some roster help. In this edition, we’re covering starters and relief pitchers, and there are a few decent names out there to take a look at. Let’s examine the trending names and see if anyone out there is worth an add.
Ivan Nova, SP, New York Yankees: Sure, Nova is coming off a pair of losses in his last two starts, but his statistics offer some hope for a fantasy add. He allowed just four earned runs in those two games, and before that–in his two consecutive wins–he allowed just three. Nova has a promising matchup in store tomorrow against the Padres, so he’s one of the better waiver wire options out there right now.
Bruce Chen, SP, Kansas City Royals: Chen’s not getting a whole lot of run support from his Royals teammates, but he’s getting the job done statistically. Over his last three starts, he’s allowed a combined three earned runs, going six innings in each. That said, he’s just 1-0 in that span, so don’t expect much help on the scoreboard. Chen should at least bag a quality start in his next appearance tomorrow against the Mets, though.
Zach McAllister, SP, Cleveland Indians: McAllister’s lines in his last four outings look pretty ugly. He’s 0-3 in that span, and has gone over 5 1/3 just once. So why in the world would you want to add him, then? Well, he’s coming off a pretty good outing against the White Sox–seven innings, two earned in a no-decision. McAllister also has a favorable matchup tomorrow against the Marlins. He’s a low-ender, sure, but could pay off as a spot-start.

Tyson Ross, SP, San Diego Padres: We mentioned tomorrow’s Yankees-Padres matchup earlier, so let’s look at the opposing pitcher as well. Ross has value in fantasy too, and he’s found some great success in his last two starts. In that span, he’s 2-0 and has allowed just one earned run with 13 strikeouts. If he’s available in your league, and you’re less than impressed with the chances of the Yankees’ bats, Ross makes a nice add for tomorrow.
Jose Veras, RP, Detroit Tigers: Our RP prospect this week is of the speculative variety, but owners in deep leagues may want to take action before anyone else does. Veras is a recent addition to the Tigers, and he’s pitched just one inning (albeit a clean one) so far. The impression is that he’ll be in line for saves if Joaquin Benoit falters further, which isn’t too unlikely a scenario. Still, it’s all speculation at this point, so odds are you won’t want to make a move just yet. Veras’ situation is worth watching, though.
