Fantasy Baseball 2013

2013-08-02 11:00:00 EDT

The weekend is finally here, and that means it’s time to shift our focus to the diamond. There are plenty of interesting series happening around the MLB right now which also have a potent impact on your fantasy team. That said, let’s take a look at some of the players out there making headlines this morning. Here’s the latest.

Shin-Soo Choo, OF, Cincinnati Reds: Choo has been out of action since Tuesday with an ankle injury, but was able to get back in there last night against the Cardinals. He went 1-for-2 in the game with a single. The knock was Choo’s first hit in the past four outings. He looks like he’s good to go, so slot him back into your lineup if you were awaiting the results of his injury.

Jimmy Rollins, SS, Philadelphia Phillies: Rollins had an interesting day yesterday. He went 0-for-4 against Atlanta, but the noteworthy tale is that he was tossed for arguing a strike call with the home plate ump. The futile effort brings Rollins’ three-game hit streak to an end. Still, he’s hit safely in seven of the last 10 and makes a solid name at a thin position in fantasy. His BA needs a little work, though. (He’s hitting .259 on the season.)

Bryce Harper, OF, Washington Nationals: Harper suffered a hip injury this week, but managed to get back out there yesterday against the Brewers. He went 2-for-5 in the game, including his 16th homer of the year. The long-ball helped raise Harper’s average to .279 on the year. He should be able to forge ahead and finish off this series this weekend. After that, the Nats will head back home for next week’s games.

Allen Craig, OF, St. Louis Cardinals: Let’s head back to that Reds-Cardinals game to check out Craig. He had an excellent statistical outing during the victory, posting a 3-for-3 line with three runs, a homer and three RBI. Craig has been excellent for fantasy owners thus far, and it looks like he’s awoken from his brief seven-game hitless streak. He should be a lock for your lineup every day.

Prince Fielder, 1B, Detroit Tigers: The hot-and-cold Fielder was pretty hot last night against the White Sox. He managed a 2-for-4 line that featured a double, a single and a run. Fielder has been relatively unreliable this season, managing only a .265 BA. That said, he’s put up some nice numbers when he’s been on his game–and playing alongside Miguel Cabrera certainly doesn’t hurt. We’ll see if he can make good on his high fantasy draft status over these last couple of months.
