Fantasy Baseball 8/4/13

It’s Sunday, and around here that means it’s time to start looking forward to the early-week series around the MLB. We’ve examined the matchups and found a handful of widely-available fantasy players who could have big games this week. Let’s take a closer look at who’s out there and see if they’re right for your roster.

Junior Lake, 3B, Chicago Cubs: The hottest name on the North Side continues to appear in waiver wire considerations. Lake has shown flashes of brilliance lately, hitting in five of his last seven (with a monster four-hit game in there as well). Lake and the Cubs will hit the road this week to face the Phillies, and if he can continue to make contact he’ll be a nice add for the series.

Michael Saunders, OF, Seattle Mariners: Saunders has quietly been posting some hefty numbers recently, but he won’t remain a secret if he keeps hitting. He’s got hits in eight of his last 10, with four homers and nine RBI in that span. Starting tomorrow, Saunders will face the struggling R.A. Dickey and the Blue Jays in a three-game set. He looks like a solid fantasy matchup for that series.

Chris Johnson, 1B, Atlanta Braves: The sports world’s other Chris Johnson is making a name for himself lately. He turned fantasy heads with his stellar eight-game multi-hit streak, which unfortunately came to an end this weekend. Still, Johnson should be able to carry some of that momentum into this week, where he’ll play a three-game set in Washington. He’ll see some tough pitching during the series, but should be able to come away with decent numbers.

Chad Gaudin, SP, San Francisco Giants: Over his last four games, Gaudin has had one hiccup–a six-earned outing against the Reds. If you remove that ugly start, he’s 3-0 in his last three games, with just two earned runs allowed in total. Gaudin will face Tyler Thornberg and the Brewers tomorrow, which is a pretty good formula for his success. Snatch him up now and give him a shot.

Danny Farquhar, RP, Seattle Mariners: With Tom Wilhelmsen yanked out of the closer role in Seattle, there’s plenty of speculation out there as to who will get the most abundant save opportunities. Farquhar threw his hat into the ring yesterday, picking up his first career save. He’s definitely got the talent to make an impact as the ninth-inning man, but he’ll have to fight off at least three other names to differentiate himself. Farquhar is a deep-league add for those needing saves, starting this week with the Blue Jays series.
