Fantasy Football 2013

With the conclusion of last night’s Hall of Fame game, the NFL preseason is officially underway. That means it’s time to get serious about the upcoming fantasy campaign, including keeping tabs on all the developing news around the league. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the players who are making headlines out there.

David Wilson, RB, New York Giants: The Giants’ murky backfield situation got a little more ambiguous this past weekend, as the team listed both Wilson and fellow RB Andre Brown as starters on their official depth chart.
Here’s how it should be shaking out: Wilson is expected to receive first- and second-down carries, with Brown taking the passing downs and goal-line situations. Wilson may end up getting some additional work if he can prove himself as a pass protector. That said, we’re a little more optimistic about Brown’s fantasy value. Look for him around No. 30 among running backs.

Ryan Broyles, WR, Detroit Lions: If you want to take Lions QB Matthew Stafford’s word for it, Broyles might be a nice target later in your fantasy draft. Stafford has been singing Broyles’ praises and said he intends to seek him out during passing plays this season. The second-year WR has also been looking pretty impressive in camp, and appears fully recovered from his knee surgery.
Broyles will likely go around No. 40 or so among wide receivers, so he’ll make a nice bench name with some potential upside as a bye-week option or potential injury replacement.

A.J. Green, WR, Cincinnati Bengals: Fantasy owners potentially interested in the Bengals’ star WR Green need not worry too much about his knee bruise. Sure, he hasn’t practiced since July 25, and he won’t be traveling with the team to their preseason opener in Atlanta this week, but those moves are believed to be precautionary in nature.
Green will be a highly-prized commodity in your fantasy draft, so if you want him, prepare to spend a second-round pick his way. He’ll likely go inside the top 20 overall and will be the second (or third, depending on how much you believe in Dez Bryant) WR off the board behind only Detroit’s Calvin Johnson.

Bilal Powell, RB, New York Jets: We’ve made no secret about how much we like the Jets’ Chris Ivory this season. If you share our optimism and are preparing to spend a pick his way, you’d be smart to invest in Powell as a handcuff pickup later in the draft as well. He’s impressed the New York coaching staff in Ivory’s absence, and figures to get the majority of the work if Ivory’s hamstring injury continues to linger.
Depending on what happens between now and the regular season opener, Powell’s value could rise even further, so snag him in the late rounds if you end up with Ivory.
