Fantasy Football 2013: Player News and Updates for 8/16
Fantasy Football Daily: Fleener, Foster and More
August 16, 2013
Now that the second round of preseason games is officially underway in the NFL, it’s a good time to take a closer look at some of the noteworthy fantasy players out there who have been making headlines recently. There’s plenty of news to keep up with this morning, so lets check in on a few of the key names. Here’s the latest.
Coby Fleener, TE, Indianapolis Colts: This time last year, Fleener’s fantasy star was on the rise. There were some big expectations out there for him, given his history with Colts QB Andrew Luck, and many owners picked him up because of it. Things didn’t quite pan out, however, and Fleener had an underwhelming season marred by a concussion. He experienced another concussion (his third in as many years, in fact) earlier this month, but the good news is that he’s expected to be out there on Sunday against the Giants.
With Fleener’s injury concerns in mind, you may want to avoid him in your fantasy draft--even with the thin TE market in mind. That said, if he can somehow manage to stay healthy he could turn into a lower-end sleeper.

Arian Foster, RB, Houston Texans: You can breathe a sigh of relief now, Foster owners. He’s likely to hit the Texans practice field on Monday, returning from the PUP list after fighting a strained calf and back tightness. Specifically, Foster’s back is still acting up a bit, but his calf injury is all but behind him.
This is great news for anyone with a high pick (No. 2, conceivably) in the draft. Foster is expected to do some great things this year, and he’ll go right behind Adrian Peterson--and maybe Jamaal Charles as well--as the top picks.
Scott Chandler, TE, Buffalo Bills: Chandler’s recovery from last season’s torn ACL has been nothing short of amazing. He is expected to play in the Bills’ game tonight, and has been taking on a pretty sizable practice load despite his recovery schedule. It’ll be interesting to see what he looks like on the field.
Chandler is a popular sleeper pick in the thin TE market. You’ll likely be able to find him somewhere in the mid-to-late-20s among those at the position, making him a steal if he can deliver.
Tony Romo, QB, Dallas Cowboys: Here’s an interesting nugget out of Dallas. Romo will be given more freedom when it comes to calling audibles and adjusting plays at the line this season, prompting Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to call the role “Peyton Manning-like.”
Whether or not Romo is able to put up Peyton Manning-like numbers remains to be seen, but judging by the initial trends, he’s getting a lot of looks in the fantasy drafts. You’ll find Romo somewhere around No. 9 or so among his position, making him a No. 1 QB that you can wait quite a while on. He’ll last until the seventh round or so, allowing owners the opportunity to stack the other positions first.
