Fantasy Baseball 2013: Player News and Updates for 8/19
Fantasy Baseball Daily: Checking in on Trout, Hardy and more
August 19, 2013
Monday means it’s time to go back to work, but the day isn’t all bad. It also means it’s time for a fresh round of series around the MLB, which is great news for fantasy owners. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the noteworthy names from around the league and see what everyone’s up to this morning. Here’s the latest.
J.J. Hardy, SS, Baltimore Orioles: Hardy missed out on yesterday’s series finale against Colorado, which was his second consecutive game out of the lineup. He’s been fighting back spasms, but said yesterday that he was much improved over Saturday, so at least he’s getting better. We should see Hardy this week against the Rays, but owners will have to keep a closer watch on the lineup cards in order to determine when to slot him back in.

Gerrit Cole, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates: Cole owners may have to get a backup plan together before next month. The team is reportedly considering moving him into the bullpen in September, so he can be ready to come out in relief during the playoffs. It’s an innings-saving move by the Pirates, who want Cole to be able to contribute in the postseason, as opposed to a complete shutdown reminiscent of Stephen Strasburg’s highly-controversial stoppage last year. It’s still an idea that’s being tossed around, but owners should be aware of the potential move.
Matt Moore, SP, Tampa Bay Rays: It seems like forever since Moore has taken the mound (July 28), but it looks like there might be some light forming at the end of the proverbial tunnel. He did some throwing from a distance of 75 feet yesterday and was pain-free in his healing elbow, so the plan is to have him try again today. The original plan was to have Moore back this past weekend, but his timetable was pushed back late last week. There’s still a possibility that he’ll be able to get in there this coming weekend, though. We’ll keep you posted.
Mike Trout, OF, Los Angeles Angels: In “five-alarm fantasy injury” news, Trout had to come out of yesterday’s game against the Astros due to tightness in his hamstring. He managed to go 2-for-3 with a double before exiting. As of right now, Trout’s injury doesn’t seem to be too big of a deal; he’s considered day-to-day at this point. We’ll have to see how he feels this morning and go from there. We wouldn’t be surprised if the team sits him out a few days to play it as safe as possible.
Andre Ethier, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers: Ethier had a nice outing yesterday, going 2-for-4 with a solo homer and a pair of runs against Philadelphia. The blast was his ninth of the season, and he’s at 44 in both RBI and runs as well. Ethier seems to be all healed up from the calf issue he was dealing with last week, and he’s hit in two straight games since coming back. He’s got a nice matchup looming this week as the team heads to Miami to face the Marlins in a four-game set.
