Fantasy Baseball Update 8/19/13: Waiver Wire Pitchers

2013-08-18 11:00:00 EDT

Monday means it’s time to check in on the fantasy baseball waiver wire once again as part of our biweekly updates. In this edition, we’re looking at viable names at SP and RP. As usual, there are a few players out there who look like promising adds, so let’s examine some of the popular roster trends to see what these guys are all about.

Sonny Gray, SP, Oakland Athletics: Gray has hit the top of the waiver wire trends list this week thanks to his blistering performance against the Astros his last time out. He tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits in the win. That was against Houston, though, so take it with a grain of salt. Still, Gray has only allowed a pair of earned runs in two starts thus far, so he’s not a bad option against the Mariners tomorrow.

Tyson Ross, SP, San Diego Padres: Ross is another streaking newcomer to the waiver wire list, as he’s been great since coming out of the bullpen. In his last pair of starts, he’s 1-0 with just two earned runs total and 14 combined strikeouts. Ross will have a somewhat more difficult matchup in his next start against the Pirates tomorrow, so leave him out there and see how he does if that scares you off. His numbers say he’ll be able to hang, though.

Rick Porcello, SP, Detroit Tigers: Porcello hasn’t exactly posted the prettiest pitching stats recently, but he’s getting the job done. In his last outing against the White Sox, he allowed 11 hits, but minimized the damage to three earned and collected his ninth win of the year. As a matter or fact, Porcello hasn’t recorded a loss since June 30. He’ll toss tomorrow against the Twins, then against the Mets on August 25.

Alex Wood, SP, Atlanta Braves: The Braves realigned their rotation yesterday, which should buy you some more time to take a look at Wood. He’s been rock-solid over his last three outings, allowing a combined two earned runs and 19 Ks. Wood has a nice matchup coming against the Mets on Wednesday, which should further boost his status as a nice stopgap option.

LaTroy Hawkins, RP, New York Mets: Our RP prospect today is Hawkins, who last saw action on Friday, posting a one-hit, one-strikeout save against the Padres. That gives him four on the year. Hawkins is filling in for an injured Bobby Parnell, and details on his return are sketchy at best. For now, it’s safe to roll with Hawkins if you’re hurting for saves (even though the Mets won’t give him too many opportunities), but be prepared to switch up if Parnell comes back.
