Fantasy Baseball Daily: Checking in on Heyward, Rizzo and more
August 22, 2013
Thursday is always an interesting day around the MLB. We’re seeing the early-week series shift toward the weekend matchups, which makes it a good time to refocus our fantasy rosters. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy names out there and see what everyone’s up to. Here’s the latest news.
Jason Heyward, OF, Atlanta Braves: The talk of the fantasy world this morning centers on Heyward and his broken jaw. He was hit in the face with a pitch yesterday during the sixth inning of the Braves game against the Mets, and was immediately removed. He’s slated for surgery today, and even though an official timetable hasn’t yet been released by the team, he’s expected to miss four to six weeks. This is quite a blow to Heyward owners. Even though he’s underachieved thus far, he was still capable of across-the board production from time to time. It’s up to you whether you want to wait things out or just drop him.

Elvis Andrus, SS, Texas Rangers: Andrus was one of the biggest producers in the Rangers’ victory yesterday, with a pair of RBI. Unfortunately, he didn’t get a hit, as they both came on sac flies. Andrus has been hit-and-miss in fantasy lately. After a brief slump, he’s now hit in five of the last seven, with five runs, seven RBI and three steals in that span. We were hoping to see a higher average from him this year (.255), but overall he hasn’t been a bad fantasy producer at a tough position.
Anthony Rizzo, 1B, Chicago Cubs: Rizzo must have read our Who’s Hot and Who’s Not list yesterday. After we called him out for his lack of production, he proceeded to slap a pair of homers against the Nationals in a 3-for-4 overall effort. He also nabbed three RBI. That gives Rizzo 20 homers on the season; good enough for 10th in the National League. His average is still pretty cringe-worthy, though: it sits at .232 right now. After the finale today, the team heads to San Diego.
Miguel Cabrera, 3B, Detroit Tigers: You can go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief, Cabrera owners. After a major injury scare on Tuesday, he showed no signs of being hurt yesterday against the Twins. Cabrera went 1-for-4 (a double) with three RBI on the day, putting to rest his owners’ concerns of a layoff following his aggravated abdominal injury. We’ll keep an eye on him over the next few days to make sure he’s okay, but it’s looking like he’ll be fine.
Dayan Viciedo, OF, Chicago White Sox: Viciedo has had some major difficulties at the plate recently, but managed to get it going yesterday. He slapped a grand slam against the Royals, all part of a 3-for-4 effort that helped propel the offense for the Sox. Viciedo hasn’t been much of a consistent producer in fantasy, but he’s had his moments. He’s sporting a .249 average, 11 homers and 41 RBI on the season. Today’s the finale in KC, then the Sox will head home to host the Rangers.
