Fantasy Baseball News: Player News and Updates for 8/23/13
Fantasy Baseball Daily: Checking in on Cueto, Upton and more
August 23, 2013
It was a relatively quiet evening in the MLB last night, with many teams taking the day off in preparation for the weekend series. There’s still plenty of fantasy news to digest this morning, however, so with that in mind let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy players out there making headlines. Here’s a quick look at what everyone’s up to.
Johnny Cueto, SP, Cincinnati Reds: Well, this certainly isn’t a good omen. Cueto was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day DL yesterday as his recovery from a strained lat continues to crawl along. What’s frustrating for fantasy owners here is that he has no timeline whatsoever for a return, so it’s difficult knowing what to do with him. Cueto has done some light tossing this week, and is in the early stages of a throwing program. We’ll continue to keep our ears out for a positive word from Cincinnati, but don’t hold your breath.

Matt Moore, SP, Tampa Bay Rays: Let’s move on to another injured pitcher, but with a better outlook. Moore’s bullpen session Wednesday was successful, and he’s scheduled to throw a simulated game tomorrow. Assuming everything goes well there, we’re looking at another 10 days or so before he rejoins the rotation. Moore has been out since July 28 with an elbow injury and has brought fantasy owners’ seasons to a screeching halt with him. He’s got a 14-3 record this year with a 3.41 ERA and 115 Ks.
Matt Cain, SP, San Francisco Giants: Moving on to some other injury news, Cain made it through almost four innings of his start against Pittsburgh yesterday before taking a hard liner off his forearm. He had to leave the game, giving up three earned on seven hits. Cain was diagnosed as having a contusion, but is expected to be okay for his next turn in the rotation. That comes Tuesday against the Rockies. We’ll keep you posted on his status as that game gets closer.
Justin Upton, OF, Atlanta Braves: Upton continues to prove his fantasy worth, as he came away with a nice line against the Cardinals last night. He finished 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in the loss, and he’s now hit in five of the last six games. The long-ball was Upton’s 24th of the season and his second in his last three appearances. It’s an encouraging outing from Upton, as he missed a pair of games with a back strain this week. Three more games in St. Louis, then it’s back home to face the Indians.
Addison Reed, RP, Chicago White Sox: Reed continues to chug along, and he’s surpassed his modest fantasy expectations already this year. The nice performances continued yesterday, as he notched his 34th save of the year against the Royals, walking and striking out one in the process. August has been Reed’s month: he’s 8-for-8 in save chances and has allowed only one earned in 14 1/3 innings of work. The White Sox are back at home starting tonight. They’ll host the Rangers this weekend, then the Astos will come visit.
