Fantasy Baseball News 8/26/13: Waiver Wire Pitchers

2013-08-25 11:00:00 EDT

Every Monday, we take the first of our biweekly looks at the fantasy baseball waiver wire. In this particular edition, we’re covering the SP and RP positions, and if you’re in the market for an arm, there are some decent pickups out there. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the latest trends.

Jose Quintana, SP, Chicago White Sox: Quintana leads the way today as a hot trend, thanks to his numbers in his last two starts. In that span, he’s posted a 1-0 record with a combined five earned runs and 14 strikeouts. Quintana’s biggest positive this week is his upcoming matchup, which is tomorrow at home against the Astros. Though he may not carve them up completely, he should be able to get at least a quality start.

Roy Halladay, SP, Philadelphia Phillies: Halladay hasn’t seen much action this year (and what he has seen wasn’t pretty) but he looked decent in his Sunday start, which marked his return from injury. He tossed six innings against the Diamondbacks, allowing a pair of earned runs and fanning two. Halladay will face the Cubs on Friday, and with that cushy matchup and his recognizable name, he’ll be a waiver wire fixture this week. Better grab him while you can.

Jonathon Niese, SP, New York Mets: Niese has turned some heads over his last pair of starts, and it’s translating into a waiver wire binge. In that span, he’s allowed just two earned and struck out a whopping 18. He’ll get a favorable opponent tomorrow in the Phillies; but don’t expect Niese to carve them up outright. He’s still worth a look as an injury replacement or roster band-aid, however. At this level, that’s really all we can ask for.

Alex Wood, SP, Atlanta Braves: It’s been a while since Wood has recorded a win (his last was August 4, the second of a two-in-a-row set), but he has pitched well in the interim. Over Wood’s last four starts, he’s allowed just three earned with 23 strikeouts. Sure, he hasn’t faced the stiffest of competition in that stretch, but he’s got Cleveland coming up tomorrow, and he should be able to handle them as well. Wood’s a nice target right now.

Rex Brothers, RP, Colorado Rockies: Brothers has been showing up on the waiver wire radar frequently as of late, thanks to his newly-cemented (or re-cemented, actually) role as the Rockies closer. He nabbed a pair of saves during the Miami series, and things are looking up as the team hosts the Giants this week. Brothers will remain the ninth-inning man as long as he’s playing well–and as long as Rafael Betancourt remains on the shelf, which could be a while. He’s the only real RP prospect out there right now, so grab him while you can.
