Fantasy Baseball Daily: Checking in on Jansen, Stanton and more
September 1, 2013
We’re finishing off the weekend series today, but there’s plenty to look forward to in fantasy baseball during the three-day holiday break. Today and tomorrow will feature a heavy slate of games, so there will be plenty of action to keep up with around the MLB. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy names out there this morning. Here’s the latest.
Jonathan Lucroy, C, Milwaukee Brewers: The Brewers lost yesterday, but it wasn’t because of Lucroy. He posted a 3-for-5 outing against the Angels, including a double, four RBI and a stolen base. It was just the latest in a productive run for Lucroy, and he’s now hit in nine of the last 10 games. During that span, he’s got seven RBI, four runs and a pair of steals. He’ll carry his .292 average into today’s series finale.

Kenley Jansen, RP, Los Angeles Dodgers: Every so often, Jansen’s stuff is just filthy. He rocked the Padres in the ninth yesterday, striking out the side for his 23rd save of the year. That gives him 98 Ks so far, which looks pretty darn good alongside his 12 walks. He also has 16 straight saves without a blown outing. After Jansen and the Dodgers finish up with San Diego today, they’ll hit the road, starting things out in Colorado tomorrow, then Cincinnati later this week.
Johnny Cueto, SP, Cincinnati Reds: We wish we had some solid good news for you on Cueto, but it’s just not there. We can tell you that he’s begun his throwing program in an attempt to come back from his lat injury, and he’ll visit with a doctor tomorrow to get an update on his progress. As of right now there’s no real timeline for his return, but we’d take any sort of comeback this year as a win. That said, there’s a chance that we’ve seen the last of Cueto in fantasy terms, so brace yourselves and prepare to chalk it up as a lost season if necessary.
Matt Kemp, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers: Speaking of lost seasons, Kemp has been out of action for what seems like an eternity in 2013. He’s appeared in two rehab games thus far, but hasn’t been able to produce a hit yet (0-for-8). Kemp is reportedly still uncomfortable at the plate--whatever that entails--and it’ll take him at least a couple more games before he’s ready to return to the Dodgers. Given the plethora of outfield talent they’ve got right now, we wouldn’t count on them rushing him. It’ll be sometime this week if things go well.
Giancarlo Stanton, OF, Miami Marlins: Stanton continued his subdued yet relatively consistent production yesterday, notching a homer against the Braves. It was his only hit in a 1-for-3 effort, but it brought a pair of runs along with it. Stanton now has three homers in his last 10 outings (and 18 on the year), but the RBI aren’t coming with them. They’ve all been solo shots; somebody else needs to get on base in Miami. That said, he’s got a nice matchup looming this week against the Cubbies.
