Fantasy Baseball News 9/2/13: Waiver Wire Position Players

2013-09-01 11:00:00 EDT

It’s Monday, which means it’s time once again for the first installment of our biweekly waiver wire updates. In this edition, we’re looking at position players. As usual, there are plenty of potentially worthwhile names out there, so let’s examine their recent numbers and see exactly what’s causing them to trend. Maybe they’re right for your roster.

Emilio Bonifacio, 2B, Kansas City Royals: Bonifacio hasn’t done much damage in the hitting department this season, but he’s been great on the base paths. Over the last 10 games, he’s swiped five bags, bringing his running total to 23 on the year. Combine that with the fact that Bonfiacio has hit in eight of the last nine games, and you’ve got yourself a decent fantasy add. Don’t expect any miracles here, but he should provide runs and swipes at a decent clip.

Eric Young, OF, New York Mets: Young has been a pretty hot add over the last few days, and here’s why. He’s hit in four of his last five games, with seven runs, five RBI, three multi-hit outings and five steals in that span. Like with Bonifacio, Young will provide fantasy owners with runs and steals. On the year, he’s got 34 swipes and 60 runs, so you know exactly what you’re getting here. He’s a finesse add, and should do well in matchup-based play.

Avisail Garcia, OF, Chicago White Sox: The young Garcia has been turning some heads in fantasy recently, so let’s take a look at his stats to see what’s got people interested. He’s hit in nine of the last 10 games, with two homers, four multi-hit outings, six RBI and six runs. Not too shabby for a lower-end add. Garcia will be in New York to face the Yankees this week before heading to Baltimore to finish up over the weekend. He’s worth at least an experimental add for those games.

Brandon Moss, 1B, Oakland Athletics: Moss’ stats on the year may sound pretty inviting, but you’ll have to be very patient with him. He’s got 25 homers in 2013, four of which came in a three-game stretch late last month. That sounds good, but he’s also gone hitless in three of the last nine games (and two of the last three). Still, if you’re desperate for power, Moss isn’t a bad low-end play. Just be ready to deal with some futility.

Dustin Ackley, 2B, Seattle Mariners: Ackley still qualifies as a trending waiver wire add, but he’s on the way back down. He drew quite a bit of interest late last month with a red-hot stretch (at home against the Angels and Mariners, he posted four multi-hit outings in five games) but has since cooled with an 0-for-7 mark over his last two games. Ackley is still an okay low-end add at a thin position, but we’d temper expectations.
