Fantasy Football Daily: Checking in on Wilson, Kaepernick and more
September 16, 2013
Yesterday featured a batch of intense games around the NFL that had fantasy owners everywhere on the edges of their seats. We’ll be finishing things off with one final matchup tonight, so in the meantime let’s take a look at some of the noteworthy names out there and examine the performances behind their fantasy numbers. Here’s the latest.
Martellus Bennett, TE, Chicago Bears: The Bears pulled off an improbable victory against divisional rival Minnesota yesterday, and now stand at 2-0 to start the season. Bennett played a big part in the win, hauling in seven grabs on nine targets for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns. That line comes after a solid effort in Week 1 as well (49 yards, one score). Bears QB Jay Cutler seems to have some early chemistry with Bennett, so he makes a pretty decent start against the Steelers this week.

Tavon Austin, WR, St. Louis Rams: Heading into the season, Austin was a trendy sleeper pick for a breakout at wide receiver. His first official NFL game was fairly underwhelming (41 yards, six grabs), but he ultimately improved statistically in the Falcons game. Austin nabbed six balls for 47 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Rams loss, justifying those owners who believed in him as a big-time breakout. St. Louis will travel to Dallas this week, which should make for an interesting matchup. Austin is a lower-end WR play for that one.
Steve Johnson, WR, Buffalo Bills: We’ve got a feeling we’ll be talking about Johnson a lot in the coming week. He posted a great game yesterday against the Panthers, posting eight grabs for 111 yards and a score. That’s the second touchdown of the year for him. Johnson has been the favorite target for Bills rookie QB E.J. Manuel thus far, and their chemistry is turning into solid fantasy points. He might make a sneaky starting WR play against the Jets this week.
Colin Kaepernick, QB, San Francisco 49ers: Just about everyone saw this one coming, but even we didn’t think it would be this bad. After a huge opening-week performance, Kaepernick took a big step back statistically last night against the divisional rival Seahawks. He passed for just 127 yards and had no touchdowns (not to mention four turnovers), with his lone saving grace being 87 yards rushing. This one was all about defense and rushing, as his counterpart Russell Wilson didn’t do a whole lot either. The Seahawks took the win 29-3, and San Francisco will have to try and bounce back against Indianapolis in Week 3.
David Wilson, RB, New York Giants: It appears we have a five-alarm situation happening with Wilson. He didn’t get much action against the Broncos yesterday, tallying just seven rushes for a total of 17 yards and no catches (he had one target). The Giants were behind for much of the game, and didn’t really divert from their passing attack during their comeback attempt. Still, after all they hype surrounding Wilson leading up to the season, we expected a lot more from him in fantasy. We’ll get a better idea of his role in Week 3 against Carolina.
