Fantasy Football Daily: Checking in on Bush, Rice and more
September 22, 2013
Today’s a big day for fantasy owners everywhere. It’s Week 3 in the NFL, and there are plenty of fantasy considerations happening at a rapid-fire pace. With that in mind, let’s take a last-second glace at some of the noteworthy players and storylines out there as we cruise toward kickoff. Here’s the latest.
Steelers Defense: We’re pretty honest around here; we admit our mistakes just as often as we trumpet our victories (okay, maybe a little less). One such blemish on our record so far is the Steelers defense. We saw their cupcake schedule at the beginning of the season and jumped right on the bandwagon. The Steelers offense, however (especially their running game), had other ideas, and it’s been a rough ride for fantasy owners hoping for a cheap buy thus far.
This week will be a make-or-break game for the Pittsburgh D. They’ll be hosting Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears, who come into town with an unbeaten record and an improved offensive attack. The Steelers have the secondary to shut down Brandon Marshall, but Matt Forte is another story. We’ll have to see what happens; if they don’t deliver, we foresee a downward trend as fantasy owners everywhere (including us) just give up hope.

Ray Rice, RB, Baltimore Ravens: Rice is officially doubtful for today’s matchup against the Texans, so if you haven’t replaced him in your matchup, it’s now or never. He’s been out of action since last week, suffering through a hip flexor injury against Cleveland.
There’s no way Rice will pay off this week in fantasy, so if you’re an owner, you’ll need to put in a backup. As a matter of fact, we’re not anticipating him being back next week against the Bills either, so start thinking about a multi-week solution.
Welker and Decker: Let’s head over to Denver and visit Wes Welker and Eric Decker, who have made some headlines this week with their injury concerns. Welker and his ankle are officially listed as probable and should be just fine for tomorrow’s game against Oakland (which is a really good matchup).
Likewise, Decker is just fine after fighting off a shoulder injury this week, practicing in full and earning a probable designation. It doesn’t take a lot to recommend pretty much any Broncos receiver in any game at the moment, so as long as the Welker/Decker combo is on the field, you’re doing pretty well if you’re an owner of either one.
Joique Bell, RB, Detroit Lions: Reggie Bush owners take heed: today could be Bell’s day. Bush is officially questionable with multiple issues (his knee being the most prevalent) and is a game-time decision against the Redskins. Meanwhile, Bell is expected to absorb the load if Bush can’t go, and will post a huge line against the flimsy Washington rush defense.
This situation is an hour-by-hour call this morning; if Bush is out, Bell vaults into the top 15 or so fantasy options. If for some reason he’s good to go, Bush is a top-10 name this week. It’s a very fluid--and interesting--situation in DC right now.
