Fantasy Football Daily: Checking in on Newton, Vick and more
October 25, 2013
Now that the Panthers and Buccaneers have finished things up, we can start looking forward to the upcoming NFL matchups this weekend. We’re sure to see a lot of developments between now and then, so fantasy owners will have to be on their toes in this thin week of action. That said, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy players out there and see what everyone’s up to. Here’s the latest.
Panthers-Buccaneers Fantasy Notes: Fantasy-wise, this one was all Cam Newton. He posted 221 passing yards, two passing scores, a team-high 50 rush yards on 11 carries and a rush touchdown. A great line like that should make his owners very happy.
DeAngelo Williams also got into the end zone (finally). He finished with 43 rush yards and a score, but lost out another vultured pass TD to fellow RB Mike Tolbert.
Ted Ginn, Jr. will likely get some waiver wire looks this week, as he managed five grabs for 80 yards.
On the other side, replacement RB Mike James couldn’t get anything going on the ground, with just 39 rush yards on 10 carries.

Andrew Quarless, TE, Green Bay Packers: Though we’re not ready to call him a sleeper or charge to the waiver wire just yet, Quarless could have a fantasy impact in the very near future. With starting TE Jermichael Finley sidelined due to a serious neck injury, Quarless’ role in the offense should jump immediately, and we’re pretty curious to see how they use him this weekend against Minnesota.
The Packers’ receiving corps has been decimated by injury, so it’s not crazy to think Quarless could get a significant amount of work. Unless you’re in a very deep league, we wouldn’t worry about picking him up, but keep an eye out.
Michael Vick, QB, Philadelphia Eagles: Today will be a big day for Vick. He’s expected to test out his injured hamstring in practice today by attempting to run at full speed. If everything goes well, you can bet on him being able to play against the Giants. If not…well, the team is in some trouble since backup Nick Foles is fighting off a concussion.
Even if Vick is able to play, he may not be able to run like usual, so don’t expect a crazy-good game fantasy-wise. The matchup against an awful Giants team is enticing, though, so it’d probably be okay to start him if he’s able to go.
Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, Atlanta Falcons: Rodgers rewarded fantasy owners who gave him a start last week by posting 62 total yards and a pair of touchdowns. He did most of his damage through the air, with eight receptions accounting for 46 yards and both scores. Should you trust him again this week?
The answer to that isn’t as clear-cut as we’d like; there are plenty of contributing factors muddying the waters. Rodgers will face the Cardinals, who have been very stingy against opposing running backs (no rushing touchdowns yet this season). Making matters worse, Steven Jackson is a very real threat to return this weekend after a four-game absence. He’s practiced twice so far.
All in all, we’d avoid Rodgers (and pretty much the entire Atlanta backfield) if you can. There are just too many variables at work here.
