Fantasy Football Daily: Checking in on Thomas, Heyward-Bey and more
October 29, 2013
Week 8 is officially in the books, and fantasy owners can now start looking forward to Week 9. It’ll be another heavy bye week, so hopefully you’ve got a deep enough bench to cover the thin schedule. On that note, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy players out there and see what we should be expecting in the fantasy world over the next several days. Here’s the latest.
Seahawks-Rams Fantasy Notes: The big fantasy performers from last night’s Seahawks victory were relatively under the radar. Seattle WR Golden Tate was the big story, with two touchdowns on five grabs for 93 yards. 80 of those came on one play, however. On the ground, it was Zac Stacy’s night, as he posted 134 yards on 26 carries. Before you go getting a trade offer together, wait and see what his health looks like. He suffered a sprained ankle late in the game.
Also of note--for the wrong reasons--was Marshawn Lynch, who surely lost a lot of fantasy games with a sub-par eight-carry, 23-yard performance.

Julius Thomas, TE, Denver Broncos: That was a close one. Thomas and his fantasy owners got quite a relief yesterday when it was announced that the results of his MRI came back negative. He’s dealing with a simple ankle sprain, which was close to the best-case scenario that could have come out of the situation. Thomas came out of Sunday’s game against the Redskins after three catches for 29 yards. We’ll keep an eye on him and let you know when he starts getting close to a return. It shouldn’t take long.
C.J. Spiller, RB, Buffalo Bills: Spiller got a decidedly less rosy evaluation on his own ankle injury yesterday. He’s been diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain, and the condition kept him out of the team’s Week 8 loss against the Saints.
Spiller is going to be trying his ankle out in practice this week, but we’re not terribly confident in his chances. High-ankle sprains are notoriously tricky, so he could be out for a week or a month. Needless to say, owners will need to get a backup plan ready for Week 9.
Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Indianapolis Colts: We’ve yet to get our first glimpse of what the Colts will look like without Reggie Wayne, but it won’t be long. Heyward-Bey figures to have a larger role in the offense now, alongside deep threat T.Y. Hilton.
DHB is trending in the right direction as a fantasy pickup, as he’s coming off his first TD of the year in a 44-yard effort during Week 7. Even with Wayne in the lineup, Heyward-Bey ranked fourth on the team in targets, so he should only be going up from here. Pick him up if he’s still available in your league.
Jimmy Graham, WR, New Orleans Saints: One of the most nerve-racking situations for fantasy owners in Week 8 was the status of top TE Jimmy Graham. Despite his partially torn fascia, he was able to get into the end zone twice on three grabs for 37 yards, so everything worked out okay.
Moving forward, Graham’s situation will reportedly be more of a pain-management issue, so his limitations could be different from week to week. The only thing owners can do is keep checking in on him each Sunday before game-time, and of course make sure he’s in the lineup for every game. The Saints get a good draw this week against the floundering Jets.
