Fantasy Football Daily: Checking in on Bush, Jones-Drew and more
December 10, 2013
Week 14 is officially at an end in the NFL, so hopefully your fantasy team is still in the thick of things in the playoffs. Even if not, you can look forward to Week 15 as an opportunity to save some face in the consolation bracket. That said, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy players out there so we can get an idea of what to expect this week. Here’s the latest.
Jonathan Stewart, RB, Carolina Panthers: Stewart’s prospects for a healthy recovery this season are looking pretty bleak. He injured his knee during the Panthers’ ugly loss to the Saints on Sunday night, and it’s believed that he sustained a torn MCL. Stewart finished with one rush for 16 yards and one reception for 16 more.
Even though he’s not a starter on very many fantasy rosters out there, Stewart’s absence will have a direct impact on both DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert. They’ll likely see an up-tick in touches, but it probably won’t be enough to make either one of them legitimate fantasy starts.

Reggie Bush, RB, Detroit Lions: We’ve got a bit of an update on Bush’s status this morning, and it seems pretty positive considering what we could have been dealing with. The Lions RB suffered a re-aggravation of his injured calf in warm-ups before Detroit’s loss to the Eagles in Week 14, and he wasn’t able to play. His absence was obvious, as the Lions had no offensive answer for LeSean McCoy late in the game.
That said, Bush is considered day-to-day, according to coach Jim Schwartz. The team will be monitoring his status this week before they make a call on whether or not he’ll be active for the Ravens game. Owners will have to keep a close watch on him in practice.
Willis McGahee, RB, Cleveland Browns: The Browns’ shocking loss to the Patriots held more collateral damage than just another L in the books. McGahee suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter of the game, and the team will keep a close watch on him this week as he attempts to pass the league’s mandated concussion protocols.
Like with the Stewart situation, the potential loss of McGahee will reverberate across the Browns’ backfield. Specifically, Chris Ogbonnaya stands to benefit if McGahee is gone, as will Fozzy Whittaker. Why’s that significant? The Browns will play host to the Chicago Bears and their porous run defense in Week 15. We could be looking at some sleeper potential here.
Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars: Let’s close things out today by taking a look at yet another injured RB in Jones-Drew. He tweaked his hamstring last Thursday in the victory over the Texans, but the good news is that he’s reportedly feeling better. As of right now, however, he’s being considered questionable for the team’s game against the Bills this weekend.
Worse yet for fantasy owners, we won’t know much of anything until we see Jones-Drew out on the practice field, which may not even happen until Friday. If he’s not able to go, the workload will be split between Jordan Todman and Denard Robinson. MJD owners should probably get a backup plan together in case he sits.
