Fantasy Football News: Injury Update 12/16/13
Fantasy Football Injury News: Cruz, Fitzgerald and More
December 16, 2013
The fantasy football playoffs are in full swing, and after tonight’s game we’ll cut down the remaining teams by half once again. As we get ready for the championship round in many leagues out there, we’re dealing with the usual batch of significant injuries to fantasy contributors out there. Here’s a look at some of the more pressing concerns, and what we’ve been able to gather so far.
Donald Brown, RB, Indianapolis Colts: Brown had a pretty good start to the game against Houston yesterday before leaving in the first quarter with a stinger. He tallied five carries for 38 yards before coming out of the game. Trent Richardson picked things up in his absence and finally got his game going in the win.
Brown and company have a tough matchup in the championship fantasy week. They’ll be in Kansas City. There’s no word yet on his anticipated status for that game.

Victor Cruz, WR, New York Giants: Cruz has a couple of issues he’ll be dealing with this week. He made it through most of the game against Seattle yesterday, but ended up leaving in the third quarter due to a knee sprain and a concussion. He sustained the injuries after a tough near-catch that was eventually ruled incomplete.
The good news is that Cruz walked off the field under his own power. The bad news is that he will have to pass the league’s concussion protocols this week--and get over his knee injury. We’d make other plans.
Peyton Hillis, RB, New York Giants: Cruz wasn’t the only casualty from the embarrassing loss to Seattle--nor was he the only concussion victim. He suffered the injury in the fourth quarter after replacing an ineffective Andre Brown.
Hillis is likely on your bench, but the injury was unfortunate as he had a chance to prove himself during blowout time and maybe get a few more touches next week in Detroit. That probably won’t be happening now.
Andre Ellington, RB, Arizona Cardinals: We’ve been big fans of Ellington this season, and he came through with a huge game yesterday against Tennessee. He posted 10 carries for 71 yards, and also four receptions for 81 more. It was his second consecutive week of double-digit fantasy points.
Unfortunately, Ellington also left the game with a thigh bruise. We’ll have to keep an eye on him in practice this week to see how he’s looking for Week 16. That said, the Cardinals get a yucky matchup in Seattle, so he won’t be the greatest of fantasy options if he does manage to play.
Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals: Ellington wasn’t the only fantasy-relevant casualty from the Cardinals’ OT win over the Titans. Late in regulation, Fitzgerald was attempting to field an onside kick and suffered a head injury. He was taken out of the game and it was confirmed that he’d suffered a concussion.
Before his six-catch, 49-yard performance yesterday, Fitzgerald had racked up touchdowns in four consecutive weeks. As with Ellington, we’ll have to watch his status in practice this week and listen for any news as to how he’s doing with concussion protocols.
