Daily Fantasy NHL 12/19/13: Matchup Plays and Value Picks
Fantasy Hockey Daily Leagues: Sleeper Picks and Advice for Tonight's Matchups
December 19, 2013
The NHL will be taking center stage (or ice, that is) this evening with a stuffed slate of 11 games on the schedule. All that action will bring about plenty of opportunities and activity in daily fantasy leagues everywhere, so with that in mind let’s visit a few under-the-radar players who could provide your team with a lift from a potent sleeper performance this evening. Here are a few names you should be considering on the lower end.
Sergei Gonchar, D, Dallas Stars: We’ll start out today by taking a look at a pair of defensemen who have been making some noise on the low end of the fantasy spectrum over the past few days. Gonchar seems to have found his footing after a pretty slow start this season. He’s got a three-game points streak going right now, with six assists in that span. Gonchar hasn’t scored a goal yet, but he’s been a good source of helpers lately, with a total of eight in his last seven outings.
He should play around 20 minutes or so tonight against Vancouver, and should play well enough to warrant a look in fantasy.

Erik Johnson, D, Colorado Avalanche: Our other D name this morning is Johnson, who has been good for a few points here and there so far this season, and has been pretty productive lately. In the home-and-home pair against Dallas, he notched a pair of goals and an assist, which gives him four scores and eight helpers in 33 games so far. Johnson’s plus-minus is currently sitting at plus-18, though he hasn’t improved on it in the last three games.
The Avs will be at home against Edmonton tonight, so kick the tires on Johnson if you’re in the market for a solid D name.
Mike Santorelli, C, Vancouver Canucks: Don’t overlook Santorelli. He’s been much better than anticipated this season, with a total of eight goals and 17 assists so far. In just his last 10 games, he’s racked up three goals, eight assists and a plus-10 rating. Currently, he has a three-game points streak going.
Santorelli and company will be in Dallas this evening, and he’s got a great chance at continuing his hot streak. Pick him up if you come across him in your league.
Brandon Saad, LW, Chicago Blackhawks: Saad’s versatility has kept him relevant this season, both with the Blackhawks and in fantasy. He’s been switched around at all three forward positions on Chicago’s third line, and he’s found some success at each. Saad is making the most of his ice time recently, with five goals and three assists in his last eight games alone.
The drawback here is that Saad’s got a pretty thin schedule over the next week (three games). He doesn’t play tonight, but keep him in mind for tomorrow and Monday.
Derek Roy, C, St. Louis Blues: Roy came up empty in his last outing, but before that he’d been enjoying a pretty good stretch of games. In his nine previous appearances, he managed to tally a pair of goals and eight assists, giving him eight scores and 16 helpers on the year.
Roy’s ice time has been hovering somewhere in the mid-teens recently, so he’ll probably see around that against Montreal this evening. He probably won’t do much in the way of plus-minus, but could bag an assist or two for you.
