Daily Fantasy MLB 5/21/14: Matchup Plays and Value Picks
Fantasy Baseball Daily Leagues: Sleeper Picks and Advice for Upcoming Matchups
May 21, 2014
We’ve reached the middle of the week, and fantasy baseball owners everywhere are beginning to look forward to the big weekend series. Don’t get too far ahead of yourself, though; There are plenty of players deserving your attention right now. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at some of the underutilized guys out there who could help your lineup immediately.
Dallas Keuchel, SP/RP, Houston Astros: We’ll start out with Keuchel today, even though he doesn’t pitch again until Saturday. He’s coming off a great outing against the Angels, tossing 8 2/3 with two earned on five hits. That gives him three wins in his last three starts, with a complete game shutout sandwiched between a pair of two-earned appearances.
Keuchel is the dictionary definition of a hot player, and he’s a must-have guy who’s vastly under-owned. If you need some help in your rotation, snatch him up before he heads to Seattle.

Phil Hughes, SP, Minnesota Twins: We’ll keep the SP vibes flowing today with a visit to Hughes, who is riding a hot streak himself. In his last five starts, he’s 4-0 with just seven earned runs given up between them. That gives him a 3.61 ERA on the year with a 1.23 WHIP.
Hughes gets a great matchup in his next start today in San Diego, so he’s a popular add right now. He won’t be overpowering anyone with strikeouts all over the place, but should get plenty of support in his campaign for a fifth win in six games.
A.J. Pollock, OF, Arizona Diamondbacks: We’ve talked a lot about Pollock over the past week or so, and he keeps hitting well enough to remain in the conversation. He was great in the Dodgers series, providing eight hits, three runs, a homer, two RBI and a steal. He came up empty yesterday, though.
As long as Pollock keeps playing well, he’ll remain one of the top three options in the Diamondbacks’ outfield. This road trip will ease up a bit with a trip to the Mets next week, but in the meantime he should produce enough to warrant a look in fantasy.
Matt Dominguez, 3B, Houston Astros: Let’s head back to Houston now and check out Dominguez, who has made a name for himself at the hot corner recently. Heading into yesterday’s game against the Angels, he had four hits, two runs, two homers and five RBI in his previous two games. He had an 0-fer yesterday, but got another RBI.
Dominguez has been on a multi-hit tear for the better part of this month, and there’s no sign yet of an extended slowdown. 3B is a relatively deep position, but he makes a nice pickup as a fill-in or utility guy right now.
Yan Gomes, C, Cleveland Indians: Gomes is another name we’ve visited with from time to time this season, and he’s back at the forefront of the addable players right now. Heading into yesterday’s matchup against the Tigers, he’d produced 10 hits, seven runs, two homers and five RBI in his previous seven starts. He got a hit and a run yesterday.
As long as Gomes can keep his BA in the .270 range, he’s a solid fit for needy fantasy owners. We like what we’re seeing as far as power numbers, so we’d advise kicking the tires here if you need a backstop.
