Fantasy Baseball Update 5/22/14: Key Matchups This Weekend
Fantasy Baseball 2014: Weekend Waiver Wire Pickups
May 22, 2014
It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time for forward-thinking fantasy baseball owners to start looking ahead to the weekend series in the MLB. We’re here to help you with that, as we’ve uncovered a handful of trending fantasy adds who could help your roster in their weekend matchups. Let’s take a closer look and see if anyone’s right for your team.
Dallas Keuchel, SP/RP, Houston Astros: Keuchel plays on a pretty bad Astros team, but that’s about the only negative thing you could say about him right now. He’s riding a three-game win streak, and during that time has allowed just four earned and struck out 22.
Keuchel has a 2.92 ERA and 1.05 WHIP on the year. He’s also struck out 55 in 61 2/3 innings. He’ll be in Seattle on Saturday, and he’s one of the hottest pickups for that matchup.

David Murphy, OF, Cleveland Indians: OF is a pretty stacked position in fantasy, but Murphy seems to have the goods. He carried a six-game hit streak into his finale against Detroit yesterday, and during that span had produced five runs, two homers and seven RBI. He nailed another homer and four RBI yesterday.
We like what we’re seeing from Murphy, and he’s a must-have player in fantasy right now. He’ll head to Baltimore this weekend and should continue to do damage in the RBI column.
Derek Norris, C, Oakland Athletics: Norris has been a popular add behind the plate this month, and it’s pretty easy to see why. In the Tampa Bay opener, he plated a run and stole a base after walking three times, so he doesn’t even have to hit to be effective. He did the same thing yesterday, going 0-for-2 but nabbing a run.
Starting tomorrow, the A’s will head to Toronto for a weekend series. Norris makes a lot of sense as a No. 2 (or even No. 1) backstop in fantasy if you can still get him before then. He should help carry your team BA in the right direction.
A.J. Pollock, OF, Arizona Diamondbacks: We’ve talked about Pollock quite a bit recently, as he’s been a popular fixture on the wire for many owners. He came up empty in the St. Louis opener, but before that had nailed seven hits in just two games. He was 1-for-5 yesterday.
Once Pollock gets out of St. Louis we think he’ll improve even more. He’s got a nice series this weekend against the Mets, then he gets to come home and face the lowly Padres. Sounds promising.
Matt Dominguez, 3B, Houston Astros: There aren’t a whole lot of Astros hitters to get excited about per se, but Dominguez would be one of the few. He started the week off with a two-homer, four-RBI day against the White Sox, and since then has maintained form pretty well. (Though he has come up empty the past two games.)
Here’s the deal: You won’t get any speed or BA with Dominguez, but as long as he’s showing off the power numbers he’s in the conversation. If he can nail a couple of homers against Seattle, you’ll see the RBI numbers climb into usable fantasy territory.
