Fantasy Baseball Update 7/31/14: Key Matchups This Weekend
Fantasy Baseball 2014: Weekend Waiver Wire Pickups
July 31, 2014
It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time for us fantasy owners to start thinking about the upcoming series out there in the MLB. We’ve got plenty to look forward to in the coming days, so let’s start by taking a look at a few (potentially available) players who could be having nice games this weekend.
J.P. Arencibia, C/1B, Texas Rangers: Thanks to a breakout evening on Tuesday, Arencibia is on everyone’s fantasy radar. He slapped a pair of doubles and a pair of homers with a whopping seven RBI against the Yankees in that one. He had another hit yesterday.
Arencibia has been coming along over the past six or seven games, and he’s finally paying off with some fantasy stats. That batting average is still abysmal, however, so take that into consideration when you’re looking at him. He’s in Cleveland this weekend.

Jake Odorizzi, SP, Tampa Bay Rays: Odorizzi has been on the fantasy radar for the past few days, following a successful seven-inning, one-earned win against Milwaukee. That was his third win in a row, and he hasn’t given up more than two earned in that span.
Odorizzi sports a 3.80 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP on the season, and those numbers have been heading in the right direction recently. He’s got another start coming up Sunday at home against the Angels and looks to be a nice pickup.
Jacob deGrom, SP/RP, New York Mets: It seems like we’ve been talking about deGrom ad nauseum for the past month or so. And why shouldn’t we? The guy’s on a supreme roll and seems to get better with every start. He’s coming off a 6 1/3-inning, no-earned, four-hit win against Milwaukee.
As for deGrom’s season stats, he’s got a 2.79 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. He’s got about 10 more starts or so this season before he hits his inning cap, so make sure you play him on Saturday against the Giants to start things out right.
Lucas Duda, 1B/OF, New York Mets: Before we leave the Big Apple, let’s take a look at Duda. He’s been on the radar quite a bit over the past week or so, as he carried a five-game hit streak into yesterday’s action. In that span, he’d posted five runs, three homers and seven RBI. He had a one-run single and a two-run homer yesterday.
Duda is flat-out getting it done in the power categories, and though that BA could be better, we’re not complaining. If you need a utility option, give him a look. He’s tracking for a big year.
Conor Gillaspie, 1B/3B, Chicago White Sox: Gillaspie has quietly been putting up some solid numbers on the South Side, so let’s check it out and see what he’s all about. Heading into yesterday’s game, he had 10 hits, four runs and a pair of RBI to his credit in his last five games. He came up empty yesterday, though.
Gillaspie’s BA is off the charts, and he’s having a stellar year even though he doesn’t get as much fanfare as he should. If he’s still out there in your league, change that before Minnesota comes to town.
