Daily Fantasy MLB 8/2/14: Matchup Plays and Value Picks
Fantasy Baseball Daily Leagues: Sleeper Picks and Advice for Upcoming Matchups
August 2, 2014
We’re just one day into the big MLB weekend series, and already we’ve seen some very interesting things out there on the diamond that have impacted fantasy baseball rosters everywhere. Before we settle in and wait on the Saturday matchups, let’s take our daily look at a few up-and-coming players you may want to keep your eye on. Here’s a closer examination of the numbers.
Vance Worley, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates: Worley is all the rage as an add in the latter part of this week, and it only takes a peek at his recent numbers to see why. He’s coming off his first career complete-game shutout, posting a four-hit effort over the Giants. In the start before that he allowed just one earned run through six against the Dodgers.
Worley boasts a 2.54 ERA and 1.07 WHIP--great numbers by just about any stretch of the imagination. He’ll be in Arizona today for a great matchup.

Justin Masterson, SP, St. Louis Cardinals: There’s still time to jump on the Masterson bandwagon before his inaugural start with the Cards today. He’ll be going up against the Brewers at home as St. Louis tries to tap into his potential.
There’s some risk involved with Masterson; He carries a bloated 5.51 ERA and 1.65 WHIP with him. Still, he’s had some injury issues and the Cardinals think he’ll play well. If you agree, it’s time to pick him up.
Jedd Gyorko, 2B/3B, San Diego Padres: The Gyorko surge has begun. Heading into play yesterday, he had seven hits, three runs, two homers and six RBI in just a four-game span. He snagged another hit, a run and an RBI yesterday.
Gyorko missed a big chunk of the year with a foot issue, but now it seems he’s fully healthy once again. We still need to see a sustained run of production before we’ll be truly convinced, but this is a great start. He’ll continue with Atlanta today.
Oscar Taveras, OF, St. Louis Cardinals: Let’s head back to St. Louis and check in on Taveras. After becoming all the rage in fantasy after his Major League debut, but consequently faded off the radar. Now he’s back, nailing his second homer of the year in the Padres finale. He posted a hit and a run yesterday to keep it going.
Taveras should get plenty of looks at the plate the rest of the way (mostly against right-handed pitching), so he retains some nice mixed-league value. He’s a solid depth play out there in OF.
Allen Craig, 1B/OF, Boston Red Sox: While we’re talking so much about Cardinals players this morning, let’s visit with an ex-Cardinals player in Craig. He’s had a pretty dismal season in 2014, which is unfortunate due to his high expectations coming into this campaign. He went 1-for-4 yesterday, his first hit in quite some time.
This is an optimist’s pickup, as a lot of fantasy owners are confident the Sox can get Craig on track to where he’s capable of being. Whether or not you agree with that is purely up to you.
