Fantasy Baseball Update 8/7/14: Key Matchups This Weekend
Fantasy Baseball 2014: Weekend Waiver Wire Pickups
August 7, 2014
It’s Thursday in the MLB, and that means it’s time once again for us fantasy owners to start looking forward to the big weekend series out there. We’ve got a few interesting matchups looming over the next few days, so let’s take a look at a few notable fantasy names you might want to consider adding for those games.
Javier Baez, SS, Chicago Cubs: Here’s a player to watch over the next couple of months. Baez stormed onto the fantasy scene on Tuesday, nailing a game-winning homer against Colorado.
The bad news is that Baez was 1-for-6 in his debut (and went 0-for-4 yesterday), which is unfortunately how things will got a lot of the time. Still, he’s got great power potential and could be useful at home against Tampa Bay this weekend.

Josh Reddick, OF, Oakland Athletics: Reddick has put on quite a show at the plate this month, and he’s trending heavily in fantasy because of it. He came into play yesterday with a five-game hit streak, posting four runs, two homers and four RBI in that frame. He had another hit and two RBI yesterday to keep it going.
Reddick has been great since coming back from his knee injury, so it seems he’s figured something out at the dish. He makes a great depth add in the outfield while he’s having success.
Danny Santana, 2B/SS/OF, Minnesota Twins: Santana is still riding high from a breakout early in the week, and he’s worth looking at for this weekend. In a two game stretch against the Sox, he put up seven hits, five runs, a homer, five RBI and two stolen bases. He had a run and a steal yesterday but came up empty at the plate.
Santana will toss up his share of 0-fers here and there, but on the whole he’s been pretty darn reliable. Given a fantasy standpoint on this, he’s got some extra value due to his positional eligibility. He’ll be in Oakland starting today.
Brandon McCarthy, SP, New York Yankees: McCarthy should have joined up with the Yankees a long time ago. He’s 4-0 since donning pinstripes, allowing no more than one run in four of five starts so far.
McCarthy carries a 4.37 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP on the season, and his numbers are heading in the right direction. He’ll take the hill on Saturday at home against Cleveland, and we like his odds to bag at least a quality start there.
Dallas Keuchel, SP/RP, Houston Astros: Our other SP to watch this weekend is Keuchel, who has been on a nice little run of his own as of late. He’s coming off a strong showing in Philly, posting seven innings of one-earned ball in a no-decision.
Keuchel is sporting a nice 2.89 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP and he’s already in double-digits for wins (10). He’ll get a nice matchup on Sunday against the Rangers at home, and is getting close to must-have territory in fantasy.
