Daily Fantasy MLB 8/9/14: Matchup Plays and Value Picks
Fantasy Baseball Daily Leagues: Sleeper Picks and Advice for Upcoming Matchups
August 9, 2014
Now that the weekend is here, we fantasy owners have a little more time to tinker with our lineups. We’re here to help, as we’ve compiled a list of a few up-and-coming MLB players you should be aware of. If these guys are available in your league, a quick add could help make the difference as your team tries to continue up the standings before the year is out.
Dustin Ackley, 2B/OF, Seattle Mariners: We’ll start out today with position players and take a look at Ackley. Heading into yesterday’s matchup, he’d been on a solid two-game run, notching four hits, four runs, two homers and five RBI in that span. He came up empty yesterday, though.
Before Ackley’s breakout, he’d gone 0-for-8 in his previous two games, so he’ll have his ups and downs. Still, the RBI numbers look pretty good for a guy at his level in fantasy. He’ll continue with the White Sox through the weekend.
USA TODAY Sports
Javier Baez, SS, Chicago Cubs: The Baez craze officially tipped off earlier this week, when he bashed his first homer in a game-winning effort over the Rockies. Baez did well again on Thursday in the finale, posting two more dingers with four RBI in total. He had another hit yesterday.
Baez is one of the hotter fantasy commodities out there right now, but he comes with a disclaimer: Sure, he’s got quite a bit of power to speak of, but he’ll also rack up quite a few strikeouts. That said, he’ll never fail to entertain.
Kolten Wong, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals: It’s been a while since we’ve checked out Wong, so let’s see what he’s been up to lately. He broke out of a 1-for-12 slump with a 3-for-4, two-homer effort in the Red Sox finale on Thursday, which brought him right back up the fantasy radar. He posted an 0-fer yesterday, though.
Wong’s BA is still pretty “blah” and we expect it to sit that way for the time being at least. The Cards are out on the road in Baltimore this weekend, and they’ve got some decent matchups ahead. If you can get him, Wong should work for the needy.
Brandon McCarthy, SP, New York Yankees: McCarthy has been thoroughly impressive since donning pinstripes. He’s got wins in his last four straight games, and has allowed no more than one earned run in four of his last five outings.
McCarthy sports a 4.37 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP on the season, but he’s pitching way better than those numbers indicate. He’ll see action today at home against the Indians, and he makes a nice pickup right now.
James Paxton, SP, Seattle Mariners: We’ll close things out today with Paxton all the way over there in Seattle. He’s coming off a no-decision in his last outing, tossing 4 1/3 innings of two-earned ball against the Orioles.
Paxton carries a 2.76 ERA with a 0.92 WHIP in 16 1/3 innings pitched this season so far. He’ll get another start today against the White Sox, and that looks like a pretty good time for him to show what he can do.
