Fantasy Football 2014: Week 17 Waiver Wire Update
Taking a Look at the Week 17 Waiver Wire Trends
December 23, 2014
We’re heading into Week 17 in the NFL, which is a time of mixed emotions for fantasy owners. The season is almost over, but there’s still some fantasy fun to be had in 17-week or daily leagues. That said, let’s check out some of the notable waiver wire commodities out there right now so we can get a feel for the latest trends as the regular season comes to a close.
Dallas Cowboys Defense: After this weekend’s blowout win over the Colts, the Cowboys defense is the hot squad to pick up this week. In the Colts game, they posted two sacks, two picks and a fumble recovery while allowing just seven points (and nearly tossed a shutout).
That makes two straight weeks of double-digit points for the Cowboys D, and they’re heading into a nice matchup against the Redskins this week.

Eddie Royal, WR, San Diego Chargers: After two straight weeks of sub-three-point fantasy production, Royal endeared himself to owners once again in Week 16. He poted 10 grabs on 12 targets for 94 yards and a touchdown against the 49ers, which was his second double-digit fantasy effort in the past four weeks.
Royal will get the fading-fast KC defense this week as the Chargers look to complete their Wild Card run. He’s an intriguing option if you can get him.
Matt Asiata, RB, Minnesota Vikings: Asiata was flat-out stellar for the Vikings (and for fantasy owners) in Week 16 against the Dolphins. He rushed for a pair of touchdowns and a two-point conversion on his way to 21.7 fantasy points. That was his second straight week with at least 14 fantasy points.
Asiata is hot riding into Week 17, where he’ll finish off against the phoning-it-in Bears. If he can get into the end zone he’s a great play there.
Luke Willson, TE, Seattle Seahawks: Where’d this guy come from? Willson was electric in the Seahawks’ blowout win over the Cardinals on Sunday night, posting three grabs for 139 yards and both of Russell Wilson’s touchdowns.
The scores marked Willson’s first touchdowns since October 26. If you’re optimistic, you might consider using him in the finale against the Rams this week.
Devonta Freeman, RB, Atlanta Falcons: Freeman turned a limited amount of touches into fantasy gold last week against the Saints, posting five rushes for 36 yards and a score with three grabs for 48 more.
Freeman is a speculative pickup at this point; he’ll have a pretty sizable role against the Panthers if fellow RB Steven Jackson misses or is limited. Keep watch on practice this week to find out.
