Daily Fantasy Baseball – High Cost / Value Picks – Monday, April 20th, 2015
Not a full slate of games on today and I’ve excluded the Boston/Baltimore game as the majority of the daily leagues will not include this game. Please remember to check the line-ups prior to the game and the weather reports to ensure you have a full roster of active players.
USA TODAY Sports
- High Cost – Jake Arrieta – Chicago Cubs
Since returning from a shoulder injury in the beginning of 2014, Jake Arrieta has been one of the better pitchers in all of MLB. Arrieta has been solid early in the season posting a 1-1 record with a 1.98 ERA and showed in 2014 that he can retire batters by way of the K, as he posted a career best 9.6 K/9. Arrieta is holding the current Pirate line-up to just a .190 batting average and as the Cubs have a fared well against A.J. Burnett, Arrieta has a solid chance to pick up the win in this one.
- Value Pick – Wily Peralta – Milwaukee Brewers
Wily Peralta is coming off a great 2014 season picking up 17 wins while posting a solid 3.53 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP and 7.0 K/9. Peralta has had a bit of a rough start to 2015 but has held the current Reds line-up to just a .215 (23-107) batting average. Peralta has always struggled against lefties but as long as Peralta can get by Joey Votto, I think he could be in for a good game against the Reds.
- High Cost – Jonathan Lucroy – Milwaukee Brewers
Jonathan Lucroy has had a slow start to the 2015 season, but it’s only a matter of time until Lucroy starts getting his batting average back to the .300 mark he displayed in 2014. Anthony DeSclafani has a great start to 2015, but I feel that he due to come back to earth a bit in this one just as Milwaukee is long past due for an offensive explosion. DeSclafani depends on his fastball and slider, and I think this is the game that Lucroy will display is power if DeSclafani leaves on over the plate.
- Value Pick – Mike Zunino – Seattle Mariners
Mike Zunino was one of the best catching prospects a few years ago, and although he has been great behind the plate, his offensive has struggled in his early career in the major leagues. Although Zunino only posted a .199 batting average in 2014 there is no denying that Zunino has the power to take the ball out of the park on any swing. Zunino hit his first HR on the season on Saturday and if you are looking to save some money on the catcher position, Zunino is a nice option on Monday night.
- High Cost – Miguel Cabrera – Detroit Tigers
One of the best first baseman in baseball, obviously Cabrera is always a save pick on any night of the week if you can afford his high salary. What makes Cabrera a solid pick on Monday night is that he has a career .345 batting average with 2 HR and 12 RBI’s against CC Sabathia. Over the past three years, Cabrera is hitting .326 against lefties and as Sabathia has struggled in both his starts in 2015, Cabrera and the Tigers could have a big night at the plate on Monday.
- Value Pick – Mark Teixeira – New York Yankees
Mark Teixeira has the most experience of anyone in the Yankees lineup against Alfredo Simon and has posted a .429 (6-14) career average against Simon with a HR and 3 RBI’s. Teixeira had a rough series against Tampa Bay going 0-9 with 3 RBI’s but I expect him to be able to break out of this mini-slump against Simon.
- High Cost – Jose Altuve – Houston Astros
Jose Altuve picked up three hits on Sunday against the Angels and has been on a tear over the last week hitting .360 with a HR and RBI’s. Altuve has had success against Hisashi Iwakuma over his career as he has posted a .400 average and .520 slugging percentage. Iwakuma has struggled early in the season posting a 6.55 ERA and expect him to have all sorts of trouble with Altuve in this one.
- Value Pick – Jedd Gyorko – San Diego Padres
Jedd Gyorko is only hitting .162 early on in the 2015 season however, did pick up 2 hits on Sunday against the Cubs and has had great success against Jorge De La Rosa over his career hitting .666 (10-15) with 4 walks and 2 RBI’s. De La Rosa has really struggled allowing the current San Diego line to hit .388 (54-1369) against him. Batting 6th in the San Diego line-up, Gyorko could have a few RBI chances on Monday night.
- High Cost – Starlin Castro – Chicago Cubs
Starlin Castro has hit .448 with 3 doubles and 4 RBI’s against A.J. Burnett in his career and has had two multi-hit games in his last 4 games. The Cubs are hitting .395 (30-76) against A.J. Burnett and I expect that the Cubs to have a big day against the veteran righty.
- Value Pick – Mike Aviles – Cleveland Indians
Mike Aviles will most likely get another start against John Danks of the White Sox this Monday and although Aviles was 0-3 with a BB against Danks earlier this year, Aviles still has a .286 lifetime average against the veteran White Sox lefty. Danks has allowed the Cleveland roster to hit .294 (67-228) against him throughout his career and only lasted 4.2 innings in their match up this past Wednesday.
- High Cost – Kris Bryant – Chicago Cubs
Kris Bryant struggled in his MLB Debut this past Friday, but there will not be many games in Bryant’s career in which he goes 0-4 with three K’s. Bryant responded nicely from his disappointing Friday by going 3-6 with 3 BB over the weekend. It’s only a matter of time until Bryant blasts his first HR of the season and I think has a great opportunity to do so against A.J. Burnett who can have a tendency to give up the long ball.
- Value Pick – Mike Moustakas – Kansas City Royals
Mike Moustakas has great power and seems that he is starting to bring a better approach to the plate in 2015 evident by his early .304 average. Moustakas over the past week is hitting .320 and has a .500 career average with 2 doubles against Minnesota’s Kyle Gibson. Moustakas is allowing posting an impressive .360 average with 2 HR’s against right-handed pitchers in 2015.
- High Cost – Matt Kemp – San Diego Padres
Matt Kemp has been playing great all season for the new look Padres and has hit .333 with a 2 triples and a HR over the last 7 days. Like most of the Padre line, Kemp has had good success off Colorado’s Jorge De La Rosa as has posted a career .385 (15-39) average with 3 homeruns and 12 RBI’s against De La Rosa.
- High Cost – Nelson Cruz – Seattle Mariners
Nelson Cruz continues his torrid hitting on Sunday against the Rangers going 3-6 while belting two more HR’s. Over the past week Cruz is hitting .455 with 5 HR’s and 6 RBI’s. Cruz hasn’t faced Houston’s Asher Wojciechowski in his career but it’s hard to go against a guy that hit hitting the ball as well as Cruz is currently. Let’s hope that his hot streak continues.
- Value Pick – Austin Jackson – Seattle Mariners
Austin Jackson has been an offensive disappointment since arriving to the Mainers at the trade dead line last season and although he has only started off his 2015 season hitting .277, he did have a great series against the Texas Rangers going 6-12 with 2 BB, 1 HR, and 2 RBI’s.
- Value Pick – Ryan Raburn – Cleveland Indians
Ryan Raburn should get the start against John Danks as he has a lifetime average of .341 (15-44) with 6 BB, 3 HR’s and 11 RBI’s against Danks. Raburn was able to go 1-2 against Danks last Wednesday with a double and a run scored, however, be aware that Raburn will probably be pinch-hit for as soon as Danks is no longer in the game.
