Daily Fantasy Baseball – High Cost / Value Picks – 4/23/15

We have a bunch of early games and a few late games on Thursday.

Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 4/23

Please remember to check the line-ups prior to the game and the weather reports to ensure you have a full roster of active players.

  • High Cost – Max Scherzer – Washington Nationals

Max Scherzer (1-1, 0.83) has gotten off to a fast start in 2015 and although it’s early, he has been worth the big contract that the Nationals gave him in the offseason. Scherzer was masterful in his last outing against the Phillies going 8.0 innings while giving up just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 9. Scherzer has limited experience against the current St. Louis line-up but St. Louis has struggled scoring runs all season and although they don’t strikeout that often, I think Scherzer can go another 8 innings while getting 7-10 strikeouts in this one.

  • Value Pick – Dustin McGowan – Philadelphia Phillies

You will have to scroll all the way down the pitchers tab to find Dustin McGowan but he could be a great value pick on Thursday as he has a decent matchup against the Miami Marlins. Dustin McGowan has primarily been a reliever throughout his career however did post an impressive 9.1 K/9 as recent as 2013. So far McGowan has posted a 2.57 ERA through 7 innings pitched and as Miami is 4th in the MLB in strikeouts, McGowan could be a huge steal on Thursday for his price.

  • High Cost – Derek Norris – San Diego Padres

Derek Norris has quickly become one of the more expensive options at the catcher position as he has been tearing the cover off the ball as of late. Derek Norris is hitting .391 with 4 doubles over his last 7 games and has hit .406 away from San Diego this season. Norris has had three straight multi-hit games and will have one more game at Coors field against Jordan Lyles who only lasted 6.0 innings while giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks in his recent outing.

  • Value Pick – Francisco Cervelli – Pittsburgh Pirates

Francisco Cervelli has done a nice job filling in the void left by the departed Russell Wilson at the catcher’s position for the Pirates and is worth a look if you are trying to save some money at this position on Thursday. In the young season, Cervelli is hitting a solid .324 and gets a decent matchup against Kyle Hendricks who is posting a 6.10 ERA early on in 2015.

First Base

  • High Cost – Joey Votto – Cincinnati Reds

If you basically picked the Reds lineup last night, you had a good shot of winning your leagues last night as the Reds exploded for 16 runs. Votto played a part in the offensive onslaught going 2-5 with a homerun and 3 runs scored. Votto is hitting .381 in his last 7 games with 3 homeruns and is hitting a solid .414 away from Great American Ball Park and has a life time .333 (11-33) with 4 doubles and a homerun against Milwaukee’s starter Kyle Loshe.

  • Value Pick – Yonder Alonso  – San Diego Padres

I’m going to head back to Coors Field to find my high value first basemen in San Diego’s Yonder Alonso. Alonso is hitting .350 in his last 7 games with 4 RBI’s and has hit .414 away from Petco park on the season. Alonso has a career .750 (6-8) average with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s against Colorado’s starter Jordan Lyles. San Diego has scored 21 runs in the first two games of the series and as the currently Padres lineup is hitting .355 of Lyles as a team, I expect the offense to continue.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Dee Gordon  – Miami Marlins

Dee Gordon has had a great start to this Marlins career as he has opened up 2015 hitting .371 while driving in 9 RBI’s and stealing 7 bases. Gordon is hitting .423 over his last 7 games which includes an outstanding 5-5 with 3 RBI’s against the Mets this past Saturday. Gordon hasn’t faced Philadelphia’s Dustin McGowan, however, has hit .409 against righties on the season with 6 stolen bases.

  • Value Pick – Johnny Giavotella  – Los Angeles Angels

I’m going out west to ride the hot hand of the Angel’s second baseman, Johnny Giavotella. Giavotella had an outstanding game against Oakland on Tuesday night, going 2-3 with a homerun, 4 RBI’s, 3 runs scored and a BB. Giavotella has hit safely in 6 of his last 7 games and has a .368 average during those 7 games with 2 doubles and 7 RBI’s.  The current Angels lineup has hit .320 of Oakland’s Jesse Chavez so I’m hoping that Giavotella will have some runners on board when he gets up to the plate.

  • High Cost –  Jose Reyes  – Toronto Blue Jays

Jose Reyes has been battling an oblique injury as of late, however, looks as if he is back fully in the line-up as of right now. Reyes started the season off on a tear as he was 10-24 in his first 7 games of the year and although he is coming off an injury, he has had great success of Baltimore’s Chris Tillman as Reyes has a career .375 (9-24) with 3 doubles and 2 RBI’s against Tillman. Reyes has been solid against right-handed pitching on the season as he is hitting .303 with 3 doubles so far in 2015.

  • Value Pick – Andrelton Simmons – Atlanta Braves

Andrelton Simmons is hitting .333 with 2 RBI’s over his past 7 games and has a favorable matchup against the Mets Bartolo Colon. The Braves have been average against Colon hitting .279 against the veteran righty as team, however, Simmons has fared well against Colon as he has a lifetime average of .462 with a double, a triple and 2 RBI’s.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Kris Bryant – Chicago Cubs

Kris Bryant has been everything as advertised and is batting an incredible .571 (8-14) since his forgettable 0-4 MLB debut this past Friday. Bryant already has 4 doubles, 6 RBI’s and 5 walks in his first week up in the bigs and as he as Pittsburgh Jeff Locke, doesn’t have too much to offer and is a lefty, I expect Bryant to continue to display his incredible offensive ability in this one.

  • Value Pick – Josh Harrison – Pittsburgh Pirates

Staying in Pittsburgh, I’m going to make Josh Harrison my value pick up the day as his price tag has dropped just enough to make him an intriguing pick for Thursday. Harrison has showed some signs of the 2014 player who hit .315 with 13 HR’s and 18 SB’s as he has collected hits in 4 of his last 5 games and hit a homerun in Tuesday’s night contest. As Harrison can take ball deep but also cause trouble on the base paths, I feel he is a good value pick on Thursday.

  • High Cost – Yoenis Cespedes – Detroit Tigers

Yoenis Cespedes has power that most people dream off and the great think about having him on your roster is that you know he can hit two or three homeruns in a game at any moment, just as he is did when he went 2-4 with 2 HR’s and 6 RBI’s against the White Sox on Sunday. Cespedes will be squaring off against the Yankee’s Masahiro Tanaka who even though dominated in his recent start against the Rays, was very hittable against more high powered offensives such as the Red Sox and Blue Jays. Cespedes is batting .310 on the season with 13 RBI’s and is 3-5 lifetime of Tanaka.

  • High Cost – Ryan Braun  – Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers finally were able to put some runs up on the board in their game on Tuesday night against Cincinnati and hopefully for the Brewers their offense has finally woken up as even with the 10 runs they scored on Tuesday, they still have only scored 42 runs on the season which ranks 2nd to last in MLB. A big part of Milwaukee’s offense is Ryan Braun and he seems to be warming up as he has had two multi-hit games in his last 4 contests with a homerun. Braun has been outstanding against Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey, as he has a lifetime .355 average with 4 double, 2 homeruns, and 7 RBI’s.

  • Value Pick – Khris Davis  – Milwaukee Brewers

I’m going to be staying in Milwaukee for my first value pick for Thursday, as similar to Ryan Braun, Khris Davis has had a lot of success against Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey. In his lifetime, Davis is hitting .389 (7-18) with 2 doubles, 3 home runs, and 5 RBI’s off Bailey. Davis has picked up a bit more as of late as he is hitting .280 over his last 7 games.

  • Value Pick – Dalton Pompey – Toronto Blue Jays

The switch hitting Pompey is hitting .364 in his last 7 games with a homerun and 2 RBI’s. Baltimore’s Chris Tillman has allowed the current Blue Jays line up to hit .295 against him and Pompey in his young career has had great success of Tillman hitting .800 (4-5) with a double, 2 triples, a home run and 4 RBI’s. Pompey is a great high value pick for Thursday.
