USA TODAY Sports
- High Cost – Jacob DeGrom – New York Mets
Jason DeGrom has gotten off to a great start in 2015 as so far he has posted a 2-1 record with a .93 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 17 K’s in 19.1 IP. DeGrom got his first start of his MLB career last May against the Yankees in which he did well going 7.0 innings, giving up just 1 ER on 4 hits while striking out 6. DeGrom is holding the current Yankees lineup to just a .158 average and has 7 K’s in just 19 AB’s.
- Value Pick – R.A. Dickey – Toronto Blue Jays
I’m going with R.A. Dickey as my value pick today as he is currently holding the Tampa Bay roster to a .193 average. R.A. Dickey recorded at least 5 K’s in all three of his outings against Tampa Bay in 2014 and has posted a solid 3.26 ERA with 16 K’s in 19.1 IP so far in 2015. As of Thursday, Tampa Bay ranks 21st in runs scored and 20th in batting average and feel that they have a great shot to win against Tampa’s Drew Smyly.
- High Cost – Salvador Perez – Kansas City Royals
Salvador Perez and the rest of the Kansas City Royals surprisingly struggled against Minnesota’s Mike Pelfrey on Wednesday, but I don’t see Perez or the Royals being shut out against at home again anytime soon. Even with the 0-4 outing on Tuesday, Perez is hitting .320 in his last 7 games and is hitting .345 with 3 homeruns and 12 RBI’s so far in 2015. Jose Quintana is allowing the current Royals roster to hit .285 off him, and Perez currently has a career .364 (12-33) average with 2 homeruns and 7 RBI’s against Quintana.
- Value Pick – Carlos Ruiz – Philadelphia Phillies
Carlos Ruiz was given the day off Thursday afternoon and I’m expecting him to get back on track offensively against the Braves lefty, Alex Wood on Friday. Ruiz is only hitting .184 on the season however, has hit .292 against lefties between 2012 and 2014 and has a career .600 (3-5) average with RBI’s against Wood.
- High Cost – Adrian Gonzalez – Los Angeles Dodgers
Adrian Gonzalez has gotten off to one of the better starts to his career as so far in 2015 he is batting .429 with 6 homes runs and 15 RBI’s. The Dodgers will be facing righty, Andrew Cashner on Friday in which the current Dodger line up is hitting .296 against. Gonzalez has been hitting homeruns against righties so far this season and has a .360 (9-25) career average with 4 homeruns and 6 RBI’s against Andrew Cashner.
- Value Pick – Matt Adams – St. Louis Cardinals
Matt Adams is only hitting .214 so far in 2015 however, he will be a great value pick on Friday as he has absolutely has owned Milwaukee’s Matt Garza throughout his career. Adams has posted a career .583 average with 1 homerun and 4 RBI’s against Garza. In 2014, Adams hit .318 against right handed pitchers and after going 2-5 with a homerun and 2 RBI’s on Wednesday night, I’m hoping that Adams is seeing the ball well right now and can continue his success against Garza.
- High Cost – Jose Altuve – Houston Astros
Jose Altuve is hitting a solid .320 with 5 RBI’s over his last 7 games and so far has a respectable .297 average with 8 RBI’s and 5 SB’s in 2015. Altuve has been great against left-handed pitchers so far in 2015 as he is batting .500 (8-16) with a home run and has had great success against Oakland’s Scott Kazmir posting a lifetime .500 (11-12) average with a homerun and 3 RBI’s.
- Value Pick – Neil Walker – Pittsburgh Pirates
Neil Walker currently is riding a six game hitting streak and although he is only hitting .241 on the season, I think he is a good value pick on Friday. Walker is a better hitter from the left side of the plate which he will be at on Friday against the righty Josh Collmenter of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Out of the 23 homeruns that Walker hit in 2014, 21 of them came against right handed pitching. Walker has a career .500 (4-8) average with a home run against Josh Collmenter.
- High Cost – Starlin Castro – Chicago Cubs
Starlin Castro has been hot as of late posting a .370 average with a homerun and 7 RBI’s over the past week and both Castro and the Cubs have a favorable matchup against Cincinnati’s Mark Leake this Friday. The current Cubs roster has hit .310 (40-129) against Leake and Castro has had decent success off the righty as he has posted a career .304 average with 3 doubles and 7 RBI’s.
- Value Pick – Johnny Peralta – St. Louis Cardinals
St. Louis hasn’t been piling up the runs so far this season however, they will be facing Milwaukee’s Matt Garza in which they have had great success off of in the past as the current roster has a current .340 (51-150) average against the righty. Peralta is hitting .273 so far in 2015, however has a .412 (14-34) average with a homerun and 4 RBI’s in his lifetime against Garza.
- High Cost – John Donaldson – Toronto Blue Jays
I’ve been picking John Donaldson all week and he has paid off as he has hit .375 with 3 homeruns and 5 RBI’s in his last 7 games. Donaldson’s power is finally starting to show this season and has a nice matchup against Drew Smyly of Tampa Bay as Donaldson has posted a career .667 (4-6) average with a homerun and two RBI’s against the lefty. Donaldson is hitting .556 against left-handed pitching so far in 2015 and with the protection of Bautista and Encarnacion behind him, Donaldson is a great play on Friday.
- Value Pick – Mike Moustakas – Kansas City Royals
Mike Moustakas is going to be my value pick at 3rd base this Friday as he has posted a nice .305 average with 3 homeruns and 5 RBI’s so far in 2015. Moustakas is facing a lefty in the White Sox’s Jose Quintana, however Moustakas has hit .333 (9-27) with a home run against lefties in 2015 and has posted a career .345 average with 2 homeruns and 3 RBI’s against Quintana. If you are looking for a little cheaper option as a solid value pick, also consider Miami’s Martin Prado.
- High Cost – Adam Jones – Baltimore Orioles
Adam Jones and the Baltimore Orioles had no trouble against Rick Porcello last Sunday and will get another crack at him on Friday night. In the first matchup of the season, Jones went 4-5 with 5 RBI’s and had a 2 run homerun off Porcello. Jones is hitting .435 in his last 7 days and as the Baltimore roster is hitting .298 against Porcello, the Orioles have a good shot of having some similar success at home as they did at Fenway Park.
- High Cost – Justin Upton – San Diego Padres
Justin Upton has struggled over his past few games hitting just .190 in his last 7 games, however, has had great success against the Dodger’s Zack Greinke as he has posted a career .471 (8-17) with 4 BB’s and a homerun. Upton is hitting .293 on the season and all three of his homeruns have come against right handed pitching.
- Value Pick – Chris Coghlan – Chicago Cubs
I imagine Chris Coghlan to be a popular value picks on Friday as even though he is only hitting .158 over his last 7 days, he is a perfect 8 for 8 with a homerun against Cincinnati’s Mark Leake in his career. It’s hard to imagine Coghlan to stay perfect against Leake however, as the Cubs roster has had good success against Leake, there is good change Coghlan with have some opportunities to drive in some runs in this one.
- Value Pick – Nori Aoki – San Francisco Giants
Nori Aoki could be a nice value pick for Friday as he is hitting respectable .319 in 2015 as of today and has had 3 multi-hit games in his last 4. Aoki doesn’t have a ton of pop in his bat but it doesn’t take much to hit one out in Colorado. Aoki does have enough speed to get a SB once he is on base and is 2 for 2 with a walk in his lifetime against Colorado’s Eddie Butler.
