USA TODAY Sports
- High Cost – Johnny Cueto – Cincinnati Reds
Johnny Cueto is one of the better pitchers in the NL and although it’s sometimes hard to trust the Reds offensive behind him, he still is one of the better options this Tuesday. On the season, Cueto is posting a 1.86 ERA and 0.83 WHIP while striking out 32 batters in 29.0 IP. Cueto has a favorable matchup facing the Brewers who ranks 29th in MLB in runs scored with 55 runs. Cueto is currently holding the Brewers lineup to a .255 average.
- Value Pick – Tanner Roark – Washington Nationals
Tanner Roark is getting the start in place of the injured Max Scherzer and is worth a look if you’re trying to save some money with your pitcher this Tuesday. Roark has posted a 2.89 ERA and 1.18 WHIP as a reliever in 2015 but was very successful as a starter in 2014 posted a 15-10 record with a 2.85 ERA and 6.3 K/9. Roark has some experience against the Braves roster and held them to a .257 average in his career.
- Value Pick – Brian McCann – New York Yankees
I’m finding more value in some of the lower cost catchers today, so I’m not going to provide a “high cost” catcher as Brian McCann will be the guy the gets the call for my team on Tuesday. McCann is hitting just .224 on the season but has been batter at home as he has posted a .280 average with a double and homerun. McCann has owned Tampa Bay’s Jake Odorizzi as he has posted a career .615 (8-13) average with a double, two homeruns and 6 RBI’s against Odorizzi.
- Value Pick (part 2) – Russell Martin – Toronto Blue Jays
This is literally a swing for the fences pick as outside of the power that Russell Martin has shown against Boston’s Clay Buchholz, there is nothing really else driving me to back Martin today. Martin is hitting just .182 on the season and .235 over his last 7 days and although he is hitting just .286 (4-14) against Buchholz, all four hits have been homeruns. I’m hoping that Martin continues his homerun trend against Buchholz in this one.
- High Cost – Joey Votto – Cincinnati Reds
Joey Votto is once again having a great season in 2015 as he is currently hitting .310 while slugging an impressive .620. Votto is only hitting .261 during the past week but does have 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s in that span. Votto is hitting .306 with a homerun and 3 RBI’s against the Brewers Kyle Loshe and has hit .311 at home over the past three years.
- Value Pick – Yonder Alonso – San Diego Padres
Yonder Alonso has had a great 2015 so far as he is batting .354 on the season and .360 with 4 RBI’s in the past seven days. Alonso has been great against right handed pitching hitting .329 with 9 BB on the season and is 2 for 3 lifetime against the Astros Roberto Hernandez.
- High Cost – Jason Kipnis – Cleveland Indians
Jason Kipnis is one of the better second baseman in the AL and although he is struggling with just a .240 average in 2015, he’ll be a good play on Tuesday as he is hitting .550 with 2 homeruns and 9 RBI’s off Kansas City’s Jeremy Guthrie in his career. Kipnis has struggled against left handed pitching in 2015 however, has had success against the right-handed pitching as Kipnis has posted a .342 average.
- Value Pick – Neil Walker – Pittsburgh Pirates
Neil Walker currently has a 10 game hitting streak and is hitting .393 over the past week and .306 on the season as of Monday night. Walker is hitting an impressive .361 on the road on the season and has had success against the Cubs Travis Wood, as he has posted a career .350 average with a homerun and 3 RBI’s against the lefty.
- High Cost – Alexei Ramirez – Chicago White Sox
Once again, not loving much of the matchups of the “high cost” Shortstops on Tuesday, so I’m going to roll with the White Sox’s Alexei Ramirez on Tuesday. Ramirez has hit safely in 5 of his last 6 games and also has a .444 lifetime average with a homerun and 2 RBI’s against Chris Tillman of the Baltimore Orioles. Over the last three seasons, Ramirez is hitting .333 against the Baltimore Orioles.
- Value Pick – Jody Mercer – Pittsburgh Pirates
Jody Mercer is on hitting .196 on the season as of Monday however has had some success against the Cubs Travis Wood which makes a good value pick this Monday night. Mercer has more homeruns in the last three years against the Cubs than any other team he has faced and has posted a .455 average with 2 homeruns and 3 RBI’s against Wood.
- High Cost – Matt Carpenter – St. Louis Cardinals
Matt Carpenter has his 12 game hitting streak snapped on Sunday but still is worth a look on Monday as he has recorded double-digit hits in 10 of his last 13 games. Carpenter will be facing off against the Phillies Severino Gonzalez who is making his major league debut on Tuesday. Gonzalez is known for his control, however, Carpenter is hitting .370 with 3 homeruns against right-handed pitching this year and I like his chances against the rookie.
- Value Pick – Lonnie Chisenhall – Cleveland Indians
Lonnie Chisenhall has a few huge games in 2014, and although he has started off slow in 2015 he has a good matchup this Tuesday which makes him a good value play. Chisenhall has a career .533 average with a homerun and 5 RBI’s against the Royals Jeremy Guthrie. Chisenhall had good success off the Royals in 2014 as he hit .308 with 5 BB’s and 4 RBI’s.
- High Cost – Nelson Cruz – Seattle Mariners
I picked Nelson Cruz last night and I’m rolling with the big hitter again as he is 2 for 2 with 2 homeruns and 4 RBI’s against the Rangers Ross Detwiler. Cruz is hitting just .217 in his past 7 games but has posted a .315 average with 9 homeruns and 21 RBI’s so far in 2015. Cruz is the best power hitter in baseball right now and is a safe option every night if you’re willing to spend the money for him.
- High Cost – Bryce Harper – Washington Nationals
Bryce Harper is hitting .262 on the season but has 19 walks with 5 homeruns and 11 RBI’s. Harper is a safe daily fantasy pick as he has such power that he could provide a homerun or a couple extra base hits every night. Julio Teheran has struggled a bit so far on 2015 and Harper has had good success against Teheran as he has posted a career .438 average with two homeruns and 3 RBI’s.
- Value Pick – Melky Cabrera – Chicago White Sox
Melky Cabrera has had a decent year in 2015 as he has posted a .269 average on the season and a .286 average over the past seven days. Cabrera is hitting .370 against right-handed pitching with 4 RBI’s and 4 walks in 2015. Cabrera has had success against Chris Tillman of the Baltimore Orioles as he has posted a career .318 average with a homerun and 5 RBI’s.
- Value Pick – A.J. Pollock – Arizona Diamondbacks
I’m going to go with A.J. Pollock as my second value pick on Monday as Pollock is hitting a .300 with three SB’s over the past week. Pollock is having a great season as he is hitting .328 with a 7 RBI’s on the season. Pollock is 1 for 3 lifetime against Kyle Kendrick and is hitting .326 on the season against right-handed pitching in 2015.
