USA TODAY Sports
- High Cost – Chris Archer – Tampa Bay Rays
Chris Archer is coming back to earth after his scorching start as he has given up at least 4 ER’s in each of his last two starts, however, the young ace from Tampa Bay still has a great 2.59 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while striking out 50 in 41.2 IP. Archer will be facing the New York Yankees on Tuesday and although he has struggled against the top of the Yankees line-up (Ellsbury and Gardner are a combined 15-30 against Archer) he has fared well against the rest of the Yankees roster as they are hitting just .140 off Archer. Archer has an incredible 10.8 K/9 ratio so far in 2015 and was 2-0 in three starts with a 2.70 ERA against the Yankees in 2014.
- Value Pick – Rubby De La Rosa – Arizona Diamondbacks
I’m going to go with Rubby De La Rosa as my “value pick” on Tuesday as although De La Rosa has a 4.38 ERA so far on the season, he does have a respectable 1.16 WHIP and has 38 K’s in 37.0 IP. De Rosa has had quality starts in 4 of his 6 outings and looked great in his recent outing against the San Diego Padres as he went 7.0 innings giving up no runs on 3 hits while striking out 7. De La Rosa is facing the Nationals on Tuesday night which ranks 27th in MLB in strikeouts and 17th in batting average at .250. De La Rosa is posting a 9.2 K/9 in 2015 and has been better at home posting a 3.26 ERA with 20 K’s in 19.1 IP. De La Rosa should be very affordable on Tuesday night and has great value if he can have a quality start.
- High Cost – Stephen Vogt – Oakland Athletics
I’m sticking with Vogt as my “high cost” catcher for Tuesday largely for the fact that he had another nice matchup against a right-handed pitcher and he has been solid at home all season. Vogt enters the contest with a .337 average with 8 homeruns and 28 RBI’s and has hit well over his past two games hitting .500 (4-8) with a double, a homerun, and 3 RBI’s. Vogt will face Justin Masterson of the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night and although he has limited experience against Masterson (1-2, BB lifetime), Vogt is hitting .354 against right-handed pitching on the season. Vogt is hitting .333 at home on the season and continues to be a safe bet if you want to spend some case at the catchers position.
- Value Pick – Caleb Joseph – Baltimore Orioles
Caleb Joseph is having a solid beginning to his season as he fills in for the injured Matt Waiters for the Orioles as Joseph is hitting .295 with 3 homeruns and 10 RBI’s. Joseph has a favorable matchup against Mark Buehrle of the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday in which he has posted a .500 (4-8) average with a double, homerun, and 2 RBI’s. Joseph has hit .393 at Camden Yards on the season and .313 against left-handed pitching on the season. Camden Yards has been the best ball park to hit at so far in 2015 and for the fact that Joseph has some power and you can get him at a reasonable price makes him a great value pick today.
- High Cost – Joey Votto – Cincinnati Reds
Joey Votto is having another solid season as the first baseman is hitting .304 with 7 homeruns and 20 RBI’s. Votto has a limited history against Atlanta’s Mike Fotynewicz, however, he is 2 for 2 with a walk against the righty. Votto has collected all seven of his homeruns against right handed pitching in 2015 while hitting at an impressive .321 mark. I especially like this matchup for Votto as Fotynewicz as in his short career he has allowed left-handed batters to hit .333 (13-39) against him. Votto fared well against the Braves in their first series of the season as he hit .300 (6-20) with 2 doubles.
- Value Pick – Chris Davis – Baltimore Orioles
Chris Davis isn’t that much less today than Votto, but I think he has some great value as the veteran first baseman is showing that he still has his power as he has collected 8 homeruns and 21 RBI’s so far on the season. Davis is hitting just .252 on the season, however, when at home at Camden Yards, he is hitting at a .341 mark. Davis has had success against Mark Buehrle of the Toronto Blue Jays as Davis in his career has a .320 average (8-25) with 2 homeruns and 4 RBI’s. Davis has actually fared well against left-handed pitching on the season as he is hitting .348 against lefties. Davis had a solid night last night at the plate going 2-4 with 2 runs, a homerun, and 2 RBI’s and for the price I think he has some good value tonight.
- High Cost – Dee Gordon – Miami Marlins
Dee Gordon had this 13 game hitting streak snapped last night against the Dodgers but I’m not going to be afraid to spend some money on him tonight as he has been phenomenal all season and has a good pitching matchup this Tuesday. Even with the 0-4 night last night, Gordon is hitting .425 on the season with 8 doubles, 12 RBI’s and 12 SB’s. Gordon will be up against the right-hander, Mike Bolsinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers in which Gordon is 2 for 3 lifetime against. Gordon has hit right-handed pitching to the tune of a .432 average and has 9 of his 12 SB’s against right-handed pitching on the season. Gordon might have been pressing a bit last night to try and show his old team that they should have kept him and I think he is going to have a big night tonight with his bat and speed.
- Value Pick – Neil Walker - Pittsburgh Pirates
Neil Walker has really picked it up over the last week as he is hitting .381 with a homerun and RBI’s over the span which has raised his season average to a respectable .288 mark. Walker hasn’t face the righty Sean O’Sullivan in his career, however, the switch-hitting Walker is doing much better batting from the left side of the plate on the season as he has posted a .316 (30-95) average. Walker has some pop in bat as he has hit at least 10 homeruns in each of the last 5 seasons, including a career high 23 homerun total mark in 2014. Walker comes into this game with a 6 game hitting streak and has posted decent daily fantasy numbers in his past 4 games.
- High Cost – Troy Tulowitzki – Colorado Rockies
Troy Tulowitzki is starting to pick up as he has hit .357 over the past week and for the fact that he is going against a left-hander on Tuesday makes him worth the investment. Tulowitzki has not faced C.J. Wilson of the Los Angeles Angels in his career however, Tulowitzki is hitting an incredible .526 (10-19) on the season against left-handed pitching. Tulowitzki is hitting .307 on the season with just 2 homeruns and 10 RBI’s, but I expect his power numbers to rise as the summer goes on. Tulowitzki is hitting .310 away from Coors Park on the season and although C. J. Wilson has been great so far this season, I think Tulowitzki is in for a good night in Los Angeles.
- Value Pick – Xander Bogaerts – Boston Red Sox
Originally, I was going to go with Johnny Peralta with this pick but as he is playing in the 6:05 pm (EST) game he isn’t in all daily formats today, so I’m going back to Xander Bogaerts for my value pick at the shortstop position today. Bogaerts hasn’t had the beginning of his 2015 as he hoped hitting at a .259 mark with just 1 homerun and 11 RBI’s, however, he does get to face a left-hander in Oakland’s Drew Pomeranz (1 for 1 lifetime against) and has hit .286 over his past three seasons against left-handed pitching. Bogaerts is one of the few shortstops that you can get at a very low price that has power to be able to get extra-base hits and as Bogaerts picked up two hits last night, I’m hoping that he continues to hit ball well tonight.
- High Cost – Josh Donaldson – Toronto Blue Jays
Josh Donaldson has been a common sight at my “high cost” pick at third base on the season and I don’t see any reason why that will change as the season continues. As I’ve mentioned in previous write-ups, for the fact alone that Donaldson is protect by Bautista and Encarnacion in the line-up makes him a great pick as the slugging third baseman should see plenty of quality pitches in his AB’s. Donaldson is hitting .315 on the season with 7 homeruns and 21 RBI’s and has fared well against Chris Tillman of the Baltimore Orioles posting a .385 average with 2 doubles, a homerun, and 4 RBI’s. Donaldson is hitting .320 over the past week and is playing at Camden Yards on Tuesday which is best hitters ballpark so far in 2015.
- Value Pick – Martin Prado – Miami Marlins
A lot of the starting third basemen that have low price tags on them have very difficult pitching matchups so I’m going to roll with Martin Prado as my “value pick” on Tuesday as the veteran third basemen is having a solid year and facing a pitching that has yet to prove he belongs in the Major Leagues. Prado is hitting .294 on the season with 2 homeruns and 14 RBI’s and is hitting .333 (10-30) over the past week. Prado is going up against Mike Bolsinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers who although main a decent start last week against San Francisco, has a career 5.12 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and his given up 7 homeruns in the 10 games he has started. Prado is hitting .333 away from his home ballpark in 2015 and he certainly has the capability of hitting for power, he is at a good price tonight.
- High Cost – Adam Jones – Baltimore Orioles
Going with Baltimore players at home against a hittable pitcher in which they have had success off of is always a sound strategy and I’m sticking this strategy today as I’m taking my third Orioles of the day in their superstar, Adam Jones. Jones is hitting .357 with 6 homeruns and 23 RBI’s on the season and has dominated Mark Buehrle of the Blue Jays as he has posted a career .432 (16-37) average with 2 homeruns and 7 RBI’s against the veteran left-hander. Jones is hitting .533 against left-hand pitching and .439 at Camden Yards in 2015 and is a no-brainer to get into your lineups today.
- High Cost – Jacoby Ellsbury – New York Yankees
Although I do like Chris Archer today against the Yankees, it’s still worth a hard look at Jacoby Ellsbury if you don’t take Archer as your starting pitcher. Ellsbury is hitting .341 on the season with 4 doubles and 11 SB’s and has hit .381 over the past week. Ellsbury has had great success against Archer in his career as he has posted a career .666 (10-15) average with a homerun and 3 RBI’s. Ellsbury is hitting .364 away from Yankee Stadium on the season and has 7 of his 11 SB’s against right-handed pitching on the season.
- Value Pick – Curtis Granderson – New York Mets
Curtis Granderson is hitting just .238 on the young season but he does have 3 homeruns and 10 RBI’s on the season and is has good value tonight if you need to save some money at the OF position on Tuesday night. Granderson will be facing a tough pitcher in Chicago’s Jake Arrieta, however he has had success against Arrieta in the past as he has posted a career .360 (9-25) average with three homeruns and 8 RBI’s. Granderson has hit two homeruns and collected 4 RBI’s over the past week and is hitting .279 against right-handed pitching in 2015. Over the past three seasons Granderson has hit .296 against the Cubs.
- Value Pick – Delmon Young– Baltimore Orioles
Delmon Young should be a popular pick on Tuesday as he has had a good 2015 season, has a great pitching matchup against Toronto’s Mark Buehrle, and you can grab him an extremely low price on Tuesday. Young is hitting .307 on the season and although he hasn’t recorded a homerun as of yet, he certainly enough pop in his bat to get one at any time. Young will be happy seeing mark Buehrle on the mound on Tuesday as he has posted a career .393 (22-56) average with 4 homeruns and 9 RBI’s off the left-hander. Young is hitting .393 at Camden Yards and .353 against lefties on the season and should be in your lineups tonight as his value is outstanding on Tuesday.
