USA TODAY Sports
- High Cost – Jake Odorizzi – Tampa Bay Rays
Jake Odorizzi might only have a 2-4 record on the season but the young pitcher for the Rays is having a great 2015 season posting a 2.43 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. Odorizzi has just a 7.0 K/9 ratio on the season but I expect that to continue to raise a bit as the season progresses. Odorizzi has held the current Seattle Mariners lineup to just a .161 (5-31) batting average and has had success against the big bats for Seattle as Cruz, Cano, and Seager are just a combined 2 for 14 in their career against Odorizzi. Seattle is only hitting .231 against right-handed pitching (ranked 27th in MLB) and .226 away from home (ranked 27th in MLB) on the season and I think Odorizzi will have a solid day on the mound on Monday.
- Value Pick – Joe Kelly – Boston Red Sox
Joe Kelly is currently posting a 5.13 ERA and 1.31 WHIP on the season, but has decent value on Monday as the right-hander has looked decent in his recent starts. Kelly has a good arsenal which includes a very lively fastball, but sometime can be a bit wild as he has always been more of a thrower than a pitcher. Kelly has pitched well in his last two outings going 13.1 innings giving up just 3 runs on 12 hits while striking out 9. Minnesota has been very good at home on the season, but have had difficulties against right-handers as they have only posted a .235 batting average which ranks 23rd in MLB. Kelly is always a risk, but if he does bring his “A” game, he does have the ability to pile up some strikeouts and for the price, he has decent value on Monday.
- High Cost – Stephen Vogt – Oakland Athletics
Stephen Vogt was in a bit of slump early last week but had a good series over the weekend and I like his matchup against Shane Greene on Monday. Vogt went 3 for 10 with 2 BB, a homerun, and 3 RBI’s in his recent series against Tampa Bay and is hitting .306 on the season with 10 homeruns and 33 RBI’s. Vogt has done basically all his damage against right-handed as he is hitting .324 with 9 homeruns and 24 RBI’s against righties in 2015. Vogt is hasn’t faced Shane Greene in his career but he is hitting .313 at home and .333 in day games
- Value Pick – Caleb Joseph – Baltimore Orioles
Caleb Joseph got the day off on Sunday so he should be in the starting lineup on Monday and although he is facing a tough pitcher in Dallas Keuchel, he is a decent option for a low price on Monday afternoon. Joseph is hitting .269 with 3 homeruns and 16 RBI’s on the season and does have experience against Keuchel going 1 for 2 against him lifetime. Joseph is hitting .280 on the season at Camden Yards and is hitting an incredible .417 on games he has played after receiving a day-off.
- High Cost – Eric Hosmer – Kansas City Royals
I’m going with Eric Hosmer on Monday as although the first baseman is hitting just .222 over the past week, he is hitting .311 with 7 homeruns and 30 RBI’s on the season. Hosmer will be up against Nathan Eovaldi of the New York Yankees on Monday who has really struggled as of late as he has be prone to giving up the long ball. Hosmer is hitting .340 on the season against right-handed pitching and has hit .342 at Yankees Stadium over his past three seasons. Eovaldi can throw some heat but in my eyes that just means it won’t take much for Hosmer to deposit one into the short right-fielder bleachers at Yankee Stadium.
- Value Pick – Mike Napoli – Boston Red Sox
It might be asking too much for Mike Napoli to have another big game, but the slugging first baseman has always been known for his hot streaks at the plate and I’m hoping that his streak continues in Minnesota on Monday. Napoli is still hitting just .203 on the season but now has 8 homeruns and 21 RBI’s after having an incredible series against the Angels going 5 for 9 with 3 BB, 4 homeruns and 8 RBI’s. Napoli will face off against a struggling Ricky Nolasco who comes into this matchup with a 6.00 ERA and 1.83 WHIP and although Napoli hasn’t fared well against Minnesota as of late, his price is still right around the $3000 range which make him a solid play on Monday.
- High Cost – Jose Altuve – Houston Astros
Jose Altuve has been disappointing as of late for fantasy orders but I’m going to go with him as my “high-cost” pick on Monday as he has a good matchup against the left-handed throwing Wei-Yin Chen of the Baltimore Orioles. Altuve is hitting .294 with 5 homeruns, 25 RBI’s and 14 SB’s on the season. Altuve has fared well against Chen in his career as he has posted a solid .400 (4-10) average with two RBI’s. Altuve is hitting .380 and slugging .500 on the season against left-handed pitching and is hitting .318 away from Minute Maid Park on the season.
- Value Pick – Omar Infante - Kansas City
Omar Infante is currently in a bit of a slump going 0 for his last 12 with a walk, but as he has fared well against Nathan Eovaldi in his career, I think he is a decent play for a price-tag that is below $2,500 in most fantasy formats. Infante is hitting .248 on the season with 17 RBI’s and is hitting better away from Kaufmann Stadium hitting .262. Infante is 2 for 3 lifetime against Eovaldi in his career and is also hitting .318 (14-44) with 8 doubles and a triple in day games in 2015.
- High Cost – Ian Desmond – Washington Nationals
Ian Desmond has really picked it up as of late including hitting .316 with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s over the past week, and as he is facing a left-hander in the Chicago Cubs Tsuyoshi Wada on Monday, I think Desmond is the best “high-cost” option to go with. Desmond is hitting just .247 with 4 homeruns and 14 RBI’s but has been great against the Cubs over his past three seasons hitting .333 (25-75). Desmond has hit .285 against left-handed pitching over the last three-seasons and with Bryce Harper hitting just a couple of spots behind him in the batting order, if Desmond gets on, he has a good chance of scoring some runs.
- Value Pick – Marwin Gonzalez – Houston Astros
I’m going with Marwin Gonzalez as my value pick on Monday as the Astros shortstop has a great weekend going 5 for 9 with a double and 2 RBI’s and has done well against left-handed pitching on the season. Gonzalez hasn’t faced Wei-Yin Chen of the Baltimore Orioles but has hit .346 as a right-handed batter on the season. Gonzalez has a bit of pop in his bat and is playing at a very hitting friendly Camden Yards so at a price that is below $2500, he is good value play for Monday.
- Value Pick – Pablo Sandoval – Boston Red Sox
I’m going with two value picks at the third baseman position on Monday and the first pick will be Pablo Sandoval of the Boston Red Sox. Sandoval has been out of late a bit lately taking a fastball off his knee last week, but did pinch hit in Sunday’s contest and I think he’ll get the start as he has done well against Ricky Nolasco of the Minnesota Twins. Sandoval has hit .273 on the season with 5 homeruns and 17 RBI’s but has posted a career .476 average (10-21) with 3 homeruns and 7 RBI’s against Nolasco. Sandoval is hitting .361 from the left-side of the plate on the season and if he gets the start, he is a great play for Monday.
- Value Pick – Mike Moustakas – Kansas City Royals
I like Mike Moustakas for many of the same reasons I like Eric Hosmer on Monday as I think the left-hand hitting slugger is having a solid season and has a good match at Yankee Stadium on Monday afternoon. Moustakas has hit .333 on the season with 4 homeruns and 15 RBI’s and has hit .412 over the past week. Moustakas has hit .370 against right-handed pitching on the season and is hitting .388 away from Kaufmann Stadium in 2015. Moustakas has made great improvements in limiting his strikeouts so far in 2015 and as his price is still below $3000 he is good pick on Monday.
- High Cost – Ryan Braun – Milwaukee Brewers
Ryan Braun is hitting just .270 on the season but has really turned up the power as of late and now has 11 homeruns and 34 RBI’s on the season. Braun is hitting .375 with 3 homeruns and 12 RBI’s over the past week and has a solid matchup against Tim Lincecum in which he has posted a .320 average with 3 homeruns and 8 RBI’s in his career. Braun is hitting .280 against right-handed pitching on the season and is hitting slugging .632 so far in May. Lincecum has had a great 2015 season, but I like Braun’s chances to go deep on Monday.
- High Cost – Giancarlo Stanton – Colorado Rockies
Giancarlo Stanton is really struggling at the plate this season as he is hitting just .228 so far in 2015 however, Stanton still has had his power as he has collected 12 homeruns and 40 RBI’s so far in the 2015. Stanton is hitting just .111 over the past week but has a good matchup against the right-handed Charlie Morton as in his career he has posted a .467 average with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. I’m looking at Stanton to get back on track this series and is worth the price tag on Monday against Morton.
- High Value – Carlos Gonzalez – Colorado Rockies
Carlos Gonzalez is at great value on Monday as although the veteran is hitting just .206 with 4 homeruns and 13 RBI’s on the season he has a great matchup against Jason Marquis of the Cincinnati Reds and has collected a hit in 4 of his last 5 games. Gonzalez has hit .375 with a triple, homerun, and 6 RBI’s against Marquis in his career and has hit .289 with 5 homeruns and 11 RBI’s against the Reds over his past three seasons.
- Value Pick – Angel Pagan – San Francisco
Angel Pagan didn’t have a great series in Colorado going just 2-13 against the Rockies, however the center fielder is hitting .311 with 11 RBI’s on the season and has a favorable matchup against Kyle Lohse of the Milwaukee Brewers. Pagan is hitting .292 as a left-handed batter and has hit .429 with 5 RBI’s against Loshe in his career. Pagan is hitting .325 away from AT&T Park on the season and as his price is around the $2500 line, he has solid value on Monday.
