Daily Fantasy Baseball – 7/21/15
Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Danny Salazar – Cleveland Indians
I told myself that after watching Jacob DeGrom pitch in the All-Star game that I was going to take him no matter what the cost in his first start back, however, after playing around with my lineups, I decided to go with Danny Salazar as I think he value is just overall better. Salazar has is an ultimate roller-coaster pitcher as he can be absolutely lights out or could give up 5 runs easily in one inning. Salazar comes into this matchup posting a solid 3.74 ERA and 1.15 WHIP while striking out 116 batters in 98.2 IP. Salazar looked great in his last outing against Oakland in which he went 8.2 innings while giving up just 1 run (unearned) while striking out 8. Salazar currently has a 10.6 K/9 Ratio and strikeout percentage of 28.57% which is ranked 5th best among MLB starters. Salazar will be up against the Milwaukee Brewers tonight which rank 12th in MLB in total K’s against RHP although they are batting .260 against RHP. Salazar is always a risk if you go with him but he does have some of the best stuff in the league and as the Indians face Matt Garza tonight, I think Salazar will be able to not only go 7-8 innings while striking out 8-10, but also pick up the win.

Catcher – Kyle Schwarber – Chicago Cubs
Schwarber has been doing the catching since being called up the Majors for a second time this season and as the fantasy websites have updated his position eligibility, I will be going with Schwarber as my catcher tonight. As I mentioned when he got called up last Friday when I had Schwarber in my outfield, I will most likely be picking Schwarber every day until the fantasy websites raise his value which is currently set at just $2500 in FanDuel. In his ten games this season, Schwarber has been impressive at the plate as he is hitting .375 with a homerun and 6 RBI’s. Schwarber has a good matchup against the right-handed Raisel Iglesias of the Cincinnati Reds as although Schwarber has yet to face Iglesias in his young career, he is hitting .385 against RHP. Iglesias has struggled at bit in his 5 starts since being called up to the majors as he currently is posting 5.90 ERA and 1.52 WHIP while allowing LHB’s to have a .354 average against him. Schwarber is one of the best pure hitting prospects in baseball and as we don’t need to worry about his questionable defensive, he is a steal at his current price tag.
First Base – Billy Butler – Oakland Athletics
I would love to be able to afford Rizzo against Iglesias, however, need to save some money for some other great matchups, so I’m going to go with Billy Butler of the Oakland Athletics as my first baseman tonight. Butler is having an average first season with the Athletics as the 8 year veteran is currently hitting .252 with 9 homeruns and 44 RBI’s. Butler has been better as of late as he is hitting .333 over the past week and has a solid .328 average with 3 homeruns so far in the month of July. Butler has a great matchup against Mark Buehrle of the Toronto Blue Jays as in his career, Butler has posted a .328 (22-67) average with 3 homeruns and 17 RBI’s against the lefty. Over the past three seasons, Butler has hit .309 against LHP while Buehrle is allowing RHB’s to hit .265 so far on the season. Buehrle has been surprising good this year and has gone at least 7 innings in his last 6 starts, however, I feel that he is due for a bad game and I think it could come against Butler and the Athletics tonight.
Second Base – Robinson Cano – Seattle Mariners
Robinson Cano has shown flashes of his old self as of late and although I’m not fully convinced that he is back to his old self as of yet, he does have a great matchup in the right-handed Shane Greene of the Detroit Tigers and I’m going to roll with him as my second baseman tonight. Cano is hitting just .255 with 9 homeruns and 35 RBI’s on the season but has been on fire as of late as in the past week he is hitting .33 with 3 homeruns and 5 RBI’s. Cano is hitting .328 with 5 homeruns in the month of July which is far cry from the sub .250 average he put up during the first three months of the season. Cano has yet to face Greene in his career, however the right-handed Greene has really struggled this year as he currently is posting a 6.32 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. Greene has been getting rocked by LHB’s as he is allowing LHB’s to have a .349 (53-152) average and .993 OPS against him on the season. Greene has posted a 10.00+ ERA for both the months of June and July and I don’t see any reason why he would have any better success against the LHB’s of Seattle tonight.
Shortstop – Troy Tulowitzki – Colorado Rockies
I decided not to go with Rizzo at the first baseman mainly so I could afford Tulowitzki and his great matchup against Matt Harrison of the Texas Rangers tonight. Tulowitzki started off the season a bit slow for his standards but really has picked it up since June and is currently hitting .320 with 12 homeruns and 52 RBI’s. Over the past week, Tulowitzki is hitting .556 with 2 homeruns and for the month of July he currently is posting a .318 average with 4 homeruns and 11 RBI’s. Tulowitzki will be up against the left-handed Harrison who although was an All-Star as recently as 2012, has been plagued with back issues over the past few seasons and is nowhere near the pitcher he once was. Harrison was roughed up in his first start off the DL against the Arizona Diamondbacks in which he lasted just 4 innings giving up 6 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks. Tulowitzki has crushed LHP’s on the season to a tune of a .397 average and 1.026 OPS and for the fact that he is at home at Coors Field tonight, makes him an easy selection for tonight.
Third Base – Kyle Seager – Seattle Mariners
Similar to Cano, Seager has picked it up as of late and is currently hitting .267 on the season with 14 homeruns and 42 RBI’s. Seager had his 9 game hitting streak snapped last night, but is still hitting .306 in July with 2 homeruns and 4 RBI’s. I’m going with Seager generally as he is a very affordable option at the hot corner and has the same great matchup against the right-handed Shane Greene of the Detroit Tigers. As I mentioned with Cano, Greene is allowing LHB’s to have a .349 average and .993 OPS against him on the season. Seager does have some decent pop in his bat and although their other options out there tonight, the matchup and price tag on Seager are too good to pass up.
Outfield – Michael Brantley – Cleveland Indians
Michael Brantley has had a bit of slow first-half of the season however, still has posted a respectable .294 average with 6 homeruns, 51 RBI’s and 9 SB’s so far in 2015. Brantley looked good in his first series since the All-Star break as he posted a .364 (4-11) average with 4 BB’s, 2 doubles, a homerun and 5 RBI’s. Brantley and the Indians have a good matchup against a struggling right-handed Matt Garza of the Milwaukee Brewers who currently has a 5.55 ERA and 1.55 WHIP on the season. Brantley is 0-3 lifetime against Garza however, does have a .293 average and .823 OPS against RHP on the season. Garza has struggled against LHB’s, as on the season he has allowed LHB’s to have a .299 average and .841 OPS. Garza has really been bad as of late as in his last 4 starts he has gone just 24 innings while giving up 21 runs and 6 homeruns. Brantley has a great combination of power and speed and I think he’ll be able to carry over his success from his recent Cincinnati series into Milwaukee tonight.
Outfield – Brandon Moss – Cleveland Indians
I’m going to stay with the Cleveland Indians and go with their slugging right-fielder in Brandon Moss who currently is hitting just .220 on the season, but does have 15 homeruns and 48 RBI’s. Moss does have some good experience against Garza as he has posted a .500 (5-10) average with a double and homerun against the RHP. Moss has actually fared worse against RHP on the season but has been great on the road as 13 of his 15 homeruns have come away from Progressive Field on the season. As I mentioned with Brantley, Garza hasn’t had a good season by any means as has especially struggled as of late. I think Cleveland and their LHB’s will have a good night against Garza and I’m hoping Moss can continue to display the power on the road as he has all season.
Outfield – Starling Marte – Pittsburgh Pirates
Starling Marte is having a nice season with the Pirates and currently is hitting .280 with 13 homeruns, 50 RBI’s, and 18 SB. I’m going with Marte tonight as he has a good match up against the left-handed Jason Vargas of the Kansas City Royals who is coming off the DL tonight for his first start since June 8th. Vargas has posted a 4.10 ERA and 1.34 WHIP on the season and is currently allowing RHB’s to have a .265 average against him in 2015. Marte has been excellent against LHP on the season as he currently is posting a .311 average and .934 OPS against them on the season. Marte is hitting .313 over the past week and .310 (13-42) in July. Marte was able to go 3 for 5 with 2 runs and a SB in last night’s contest and I think he’ll be able to continue to have success against Vargas and the Royals tonight.
