Daily Fantasy Baseball – 7/31/15

Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.

Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 7/31/15

Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!

Pitcher – Eduardo Rodriguez – Boston Red Sox

I’m looking to save a bit of my salary at the pitching positon tonight and going to go with a solid value play in the Red Sox’s Eduardo Rodriguez. Rodriguez has put in 8 quality starts in his first 11 games with the Red Sox, however, has shown the ability that he can struggle as those other three non-quality starts were pretty ugly. On the season, the left-handed Rodriguez has posted a 4.26 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP while striking out 52 batters in 61.1 IP. Rodriguez currently has a respectable 7.6 K/9 ratio and holding batters to a .231 average. I like Rodriguez tonight mostly do with the matchup against the weak-hitting Tampa Bay Rays. On the season, the Rays rank 27th in MLB in batting average (.238) and are 4th in MLB in total strikeouts. Rodriguez has shown that he can be brilliant, especially after his 7 inning performance recently against the Detroit Tigers in which he gave up just 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 6 and I expect him to have another solid showing tonight. Take Rodriguez and save some money for your hitters.

Catcher – Yadier Molina – St. Louis Cardinals

I’m going to continue to save money early here and go with Yadier Molina for the bargain bin price of $2200, due to his outstanding matchup against Kyle Kendrick of the Colorado Rockies on Friday. Molina is haven’t a wonderful year at the plate as although he is hitting at a .284 mark, he only have collected 2 homeruns and 38 RBI’s on the season. Molina is a great option today as he is going up against the Kyle Kendrick who is currently sporting a 6.33 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. Kendrick is allowing opposing batters to have a .302 average, .555 slugging %, and .914 OPS against him on the season. Kendrick is certainly having trouble keeping the ball in the park as he has allowed 25 homeruns on the season in 112.1 IP. Overall, you can see how bad Kendrick has been this year and it makes it an easy call to take a chance on Molina tonight.

First Base – Chris Davis – Baltimore Orioles

Chris Davis is currently on a bit of a hot streak as over his past week he is hitting .280 (career .252 hitter) and has hit 4 homeruns and driven in 14 RBI’s. On the season, Davis is hitting just .244 however it’s hard to ignore the power he has brought to the plate as he has hit 25 homeruns and driven in 69 RBI’s. Davis has a solid matchup against the Tigers Bud Farmer, who although he has a great baseball name, he hasn’t had much success in his limited action in MLB so far. In 3 games played in this year (2 starts), Farmer has a 9.22 ERA and 1.90 WHIP and is allowing opposing batters to have a .373 average, .661 slugging %, and 1.083 OPS against him. Farmer has been especially bad against LHB’s as he is allowing them to have a .438 (14-32) average and 1.158 OPS against him. Davis has been much better at Camden Yards this season as he is hitting .265 with 17 homeruns at home and I think he continues to stay hot against Farmer and the Tigers tonight.

Second Base – Jason Kipnis – Cleveland Indians

I’m going to continue to stick with Jason Kipnis at the moments as he continues to get solid matchups against average RHP’s. Kipnis is having a great season as the 4-year veteran is currently hitting .332 with 6 homeruns and 39 RBI’s on the season. Kipnis has been great against RHP’s on the season as he is posting a .377 average and 1.009 OPS. Kipnis will be squaring off against the right-handed Kendall Graveman of the Oakland Athletics who comes into this matchup with a 4.13 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. Graveman has struggled as of late as over his last three starts he has one just 12.1 IP while giving up 14 ER’s and 4 homeruns. Graveman is allowing opposing hitters to have a .281 average against him and has given up 99 hits in just 89.1 IP on the season. Kipnis is hitting .440 over his past 7 games and as he does have the potential to also get us a SB tonight, I think Kipnis is the way to go on Friday.

Shortstop – Brandon Crawford – San Francisco Giants

I’m going to go with Brandon Crawford tonight as the San Francisco Giants shortstop is currently hitting .268 with 15 homeruns and 63 RBI’s on the season and has a good matchup up against the right-handed Nick Martinez of the Texas Rangers on Friday. Crawford has been performing well as of late as he is hitting .300 with a homerun and 4 RBI’s over the past week and has collected at least one hit in 7 of his last 8 games. Crawford hasn’t yet face Martinez in his career, but I like the matchup against Martinez has really struggled as of late after getting off to a great start to his 2015 season. Martinez has seen his ERA climb to 4.08 from 2.03 over his past 8 starts in which the Rangers have lost 7 of those 8 games. Crawford is hitting .263 and has collected 12 of his 15 homeruns against RHP’s on the season. I think the Giants will have a good night against Martinez and as Crawford has been batting 6th in the order, I think he’ll get some good RISP chances tonight.

Third Base – Todd Frazier – Cincinnati Reds

At the time of writing this article yesterday, I had the Reds going against Jeff Locke. As they are going against Locke tonight, I’m going to stay with Todd Frazier as I think he is one of the more obvious picks based on price and matchup tonight. Here is my write-up from yesterday:

“Frazier is having another great season as has become the face of the franchise after his recent HR Derby performance at this All-Star game. On the season, Frazier is hitting .271 with 27 homeruns and 67 RBI’s. Frazier has a good matchup against the left-hander Jeff Locke of the Pittsburgh Pirates in which in his career he is hitting .450 (9-20) with 2 homeruns against. Locke is allowing RHP to post a .274 average and .708 OPS against him on the season. Frazier has in an incredible 11 homeruns in just 99 AB’s against LHP on the season and as he is at home at a good hitter’s ballpark, I think Frazier is a great pick tonight for 3B.”

Outfield – Andrew McCutchen – Pittsburgh Pirates

Do you remember when McCutchen was struggling earlier in the season? At the moment, that seems like a distant memory as the Pirates center fielder has been crushing as of late. Over the past week, McCutchen is hitting .320 and on the season, is now hitting .294 with 14 homeruns and 65 RBI’s. McCutchen is having a solid July as he is hitting .289 with 5 homeruns and 20 RBI’s. McCutchen will be up against the right-handed Michael Lorenzen of the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. McCutchen is 0-3 lifetime against Lorenzen but that doesn’t scare me in this matchup as I don’t put much faith in Lorenzen who is coming off a 2.1 IP performance in which he gave up 8 runs (2 homeruns) on 7 hits. McCutchen is hitting .292 with 12 of his 14 homeruns against RHP on the season and as he is coming up back-to-back multi-hit games, I’m going to hope he continues to stay hot tonight.

Outfield – Preston Tucker – Houston Astros

Preston Tucker has been nice surprise for the Houston Astros this season as the rookie left-fielder is currently hitting .266 with 10 homeruns and 28 RBI’s on the season. Tucker has been great as of late as he is hitting .333 with 2 homeruns over the past week and has hit .316 since the All-Star break. I’m going with Tucker tonight as he been lights out against RHP as of late and is hitting .299 with all 10 of his homeruns against RHP on the season. Tucker will be up against the right-handed Rubby De La Rosa of the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight in which he has yet to face in his career. De La Rosa comes into this matchup with a 4.52 ERA and 1.28 WHIP and has given up 22 homeruns in his 20 starts on the season. De La Rosa is allowing LHB’s to have a .300 average and .932 OPS against him on the season. Tucker has five homeruns since the All-Star break and I wouldn’t be surprised if he adds to that total tonight.

Outfield – Marlon Byrd – Cincinnati Reds

It was between Marlon Byrd and Travis Snider as my $2200 option in the outfield tonight and although getting another LHB against Bud Farmer is tempting, I think Byrd just has more potential against the left-handed Jeff Locke of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Byrd has a big game last night going 3-6 with a double, homerun and 3 RBI’s and as he has a lifetime .333 (4-12) average against Locke with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s, I don’t see any reason why he can’t have another big night tonight. Byrd is hitting just .245 on the season but has shown that he can still get the ball out of the ball park as he has hit 17homeruns on the season. Locke is allowing RHB’s to have a .274 average and .708 OPS against him on the season and comes into this matchup with a 4.15 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Byrd has been much better at home (Great American Ball Park) as is hitting .272 and has been great against the Pirates this season as he is hitting .326 (15-46) with 4 homeruns and 11 RBI’s.
