Daily Fantasy Baseball – 8/20/15
Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
USA TODAY Sports
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Jake Arrieta – Chicago Cubs
I’m going with Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs tonight as not only he has been arguably the best pitcher in MLB over the past two months, he is also has a decent matchup against the Atlanta Braves. On the season, Arrieta has posted a 2.39 ERA and 0.99 WHIP while striking out 163 batters in 162.0 IP. Arrieta currently is spotting a 9.1 K/9 ratio and has a strikeout rate of 25.75% which ranks 12th in MLB among qualified starters. Atlanta is currently hitting .252 on the season (Ranked 17 in MLB) and although they only have a strikeout rate of 18.2% (4th best in MLB), Arrieta had no trouble finding strikeouts in his previous matchup against Atlanta this year as he went 7.0 IP giving up no runs while striking out 10. Arrieta has only given up 2 or less runs in 10 of his last 11 games and as Atlanta has only averaged 2.33 runs/game over their last 6 games, I think Arrieta will have another great day on the mound tonight.
Catcher – Wilson Ramos – Washington Nationals
Wilson Ramos is hitting just .233 on the season but as the veteran catcher does have 9 homeruns and 49 RBI’s and is playing at Coors Field tonight against a LHP, I think he is showing good value at a cost of $2800. Ramos will be up against the left-handed Yohan Flande of the Colorado Rockies who comes into this matchup posting a 4.19 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. Flande is surprisingly pitching better at Coors Field than on the road however, has had some troubles against RHB’s as he is allowing RHB’s to post a .284 average and .824 OPS. Flande has been hit hard in last two starts and as he has given up 5 homeruns in that span in which three of them came against Washington in early August. Over the past three years, Ramos is hitting .333 at Coors Field and although he is just 1 for 6 against Flande in his career, I still like his chances to go deep tonight.
First Base – Jason Bour – Miami Marlins
There are a lot of nice matchups at the first base position today, but as I need to conserve some money as I went with one of the higher price pitchers, I’m going to take a roll of the dice with Justin Bour. On the season Bour is hitting .247 with 12 homeruns and 38 RBI’s and although he is hitting just .217 over the past week, he has collected at least one hit in 6 of his last 7 games. Bour has a great matchup against Jerome Williams of the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night as Williams comes into this match-up posting a 5.47 ERA and 1.58 WHIP on the season. Williams is allowing opposing hitters to post a .317 average, .496 slugging percentage, and .854 OPS against him on the season. Williams has also had trouble with homeruns as he is has given up 18 HR’s in just 98.2 IP on the season. Bour is hitting .251 with all 12 of his homeruns against RHP on the season and I’m hoping that he can add to his HR total tonight.
Second Base – Jonathan Schoop – Baltimore Orioles
Jonathan Schoop continues to find a way on my team and probably will continue to do so while his price tag stays below the $2500 mark. Schoop has been starting regularly as of late and will continue to do so as the second baseman is hitting .301 with 9 homeruns and 24 RBI’s so far on the season. Schoop will be up against the right-handed Tyler Duffey of the Minnesota Twins in which he has yet to face in his career. Duffey will be making his third start in the majors and had mixed results as he got rocked in his first start against the Blue Jays however, bounced back nicely pitching 6 innings of 1 hit ball in his recent outing against the Indians. Duffey still is spotting a 6.75 ERA and 1.73 WHIP on the season and in the limited MLB data available, has had more difficulty against RHB as he has allowed RHB’s to have a .588 slugging percentage and .969 OPS against him. Schoop has been great against RHP’s as he is posting a .330 average and .957 OPS and as he is hitting .320 over the past week, I think he is a great start tonight.
Shortstop – Xander Bogaerts – Boston Red Sox
Xander Bogaerts is having a great season as the Red Sox shortstop is hitting .312 on the season with 4 homeruns, 59 RBI’s and 7 SB. Bogaerts has been phenomenal against LHP and hitting with RISP that he has almost become a must start when he is facing a LHP as he does tonight the Kansas City Royals Danny Duffy. Duffy comes into this matchup with a respectable 4.03 ERA and 1.38 WHIP and has pitched better as of late. Duffy is currently allowing RHB’s to post a .266 average and .789 OPS against him on the season. All 10 of the homeruns that Duffy has allowed on the season have come against RHB’s. Bogaerts is hitting an incredible .342 against LHP and has a .383 average with RISP. The Red Sox bats have been red hot as of late and with Bogaerts hitting in the 3rd spot of the batting order, he is worth the investment tonight.
Third Base – Todd Frazier – Cincinnati Reds
How low with Todd Frazier price tag go? The slugging third baseman is in a major slump at the moment, but shows some of the best value of the day as he is going against a left-hander in the Diamondbacks Patrick Corbin and will cost just $2800. Frazier is hitting just .257 on the season but still had 29 homeruns, 73 RBI’s and 11 SB’s on the season. Corbin has pitched well this year as he has posted a 3.43 ERA and 1.19 WHIP but has struggled more against RHB’s as he is allowing them to post a .248 average and .739 OPS. Although Frazier has only hit .174 since the beginning of July, he has hit LHP’s hard this season as he has 7 homeruns in just 80 AB’s against lefties. Frazier has been much better at home this season posting a .284 average and .929 OPS and it will be only a matter of time in which Frazier starts blasting baseballs over the fences of Great American Ball Park again.
Outfield – A.J. Pollock – Arizona Diamondbacks
A.J. Pollock has become one of the better outfielders in MLB as the center fielder for the Diamondbacks is currently hitting .310 on the season with 12 homeruns, 50 RBI’s and 29 SB’s. Pollock has been on fire since the All-Star break as he posted a .342 average and .920 OPS. Pollock has a nice matchup tonight against John Lamb of the Cincinnati Reds who comes into this matchup with a 7.50 ERA and 1.67 WHIP. Lamb will be looking to improve in his 2nd MLB start as he struggled in his debut giving up 5 runs on 8 hits against the Dodgers last Friday and struggled against the RHB’s of the Dodgers allowing them to hit .389 (7-18) against him. Pollock has fared well against LHP on the season as he has posted a .316 average and .858 OPS. Pollock had his 10 game hitting streak snapped last night, however as he is facing a hittable lefty in a great hitters ballpark tonight, I think Pollock could be in for a big night.
Outfield – J.D. Martinez – Detroit Tigers
J.D Martinez is showing that his performance in 2014 was no fluke as the right fielder for the Tigers is having a monster season hitting .289 with 31 homeruns and 81 RBI’s. Martinez has been hot as of late as he is hitting .333 over the past week and has hit homeruns in his past two games. Martinez will be up against the left-handed Martin Perez of the Texas Rangers who is coming into this matchup with a 5.29 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. Martin has pitched better than what his stats show as they are inflated from his one bad outing against the Yankees in late July however, he has struggled against RHB’s on the season allowing RHB’s to post a .333 average and .823 OPS against him. Martinez is hitting .302 with 17 homeruns at home this season which is highly impressive as Comerica Ball Park is more known to be a pitchers ballpark. Martinez is hitting .304 so far in the month of August and I think he can continue his strong month with a solid performance against Perez and the Rangers tonight.
Outfield – Mitch Moreland – Texas Rangers
I’m going with Mitch Moreland with my last outfield spot of the day as the left-handed hitting Moreland is having a great season with the Rangers posting a .294 average with 18 homeruns and 64 RBI’s. Moreland will be up against the left-handed Alfredo Simon of the Detroit Tigers who comes into this matchup with a 4.84 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. Simon has really struggled since the All-Star Break as in his 5 starts since the break, has posted a 5.90 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. Simon has been hit hard by LHB’s this season as he is allowing LHB’s to post a .307 average, .535 slugging percentage, and .896 OPS against him. Moreland has been nightmare for RHP’s on the season as he has posted a .303 average, .552 slugging percentage, and .906 OPS against righties. Moreland has hit 15 of his 18 homeruns against RHP. Moreland is hitting .391 over the past week and .339 in August and I feel is showing great value at a cost of just $2900 tonight.
