Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
USA TODAY Sports
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Carlos Rodon – Chicago White Sox
Carlos Rodon has had an up and down rookie season with the White Sox, however, has pitched well as of late and I feel has the best value of any pitcher today with a price tag of just $6800. On the season, Rodon is posting a 4.42 ERA and 1.55 WHIP and has had a little bit of control problems as he has piled up 54 walks in just 99.2 IP. Although he can be a bit wild, Rodon has a great arsenal and currently is posting a solid 9.6 K/9 Ratio. Rodon has a good matchup against the Seattle Mariners who rank third in MLB in total strikeouts on the season after fanning 14 times against Chris Sale on Friday night. In his last two starts Rodon has gone 15 innings while giving up just 2 run while striking out 16 and I think he continue his current hot streak tonight in Seattle.
Catcher – Blake Swihart – Boston Red Sox
Blake Swihart is starting to figure out MLB pitching as although he is hitting just .274 on the season with 1 homerun and 22 RBI’s, the talented rookie for Boston is hitting an incredible .625 (10-16) with 4 doubles, 8 RBI’s and 8 runs scored over the past week. Swihart had great success in last night’s game going 3 for 3 against Johnny Cueto and I think if he is able to handle Cueto, he’ll be able to have no issues against Yordano Ventura. Ventura comes into this matchup with a 4.82 ERA and 1.31 WHIP and is allowing LHB’s to post a .269 average and .795 OPS against him on the season. The Red Sox bats have been on fire over the past week as they are posting a .366 average and 1.048 OPS as a team, and as I expect them to continue their torrid hitting tonight, I think Swihart will have some good RBI’s opportunities batting towards the bottom of the lineup.
First Base – David Ortiz – Boston Red Sox
I’m going to stay in Boston and go with David Ortiz as he is once against showing after the All-Star Break that he still hit the baseball. David Ortiz is hitting .263 on the season with 26 homeruns and 75 RBI’s and like all the Red Sox, has been hot as of late hitting .346 over the past week. Ortiz is having a great August as for the month he is hitting .358 with 6 homeruns and 17 RBI’s. Ortiz is 0-3 against Ventura in his career, however has a .280 average and .962 OPS against RHP on the season. 20 of Big Papi’s 26 homeruns have come against RHP and as he is hitting a solid .290 at Fenway Park on the season, he is a safe pick for Sunday.
Second Base – Brian Dozier – Minnesota Twins
Brian Dozier is hitting just .245 on the season however, he has had a great fantasy season as the second baseman has hit 25 homeruns and 62 RBI’s. Dozier has had a tough August as he is hitting just .205 for the month but he has a decent matchup against the right-handed Chris Tillman on Friday. Tillman is posting a 4.54 ERA and 1.34 WHIP on the season and although he is coming off one of his better performances of the season, he nothing more than an average MLB pitcher. Dozier has had some success off Chris Tillman as in his career he has posted a .333 (1-3) average with 2 RBI’s and 2 BB. Dozier is hitting .300 at Camden Yards this season and I think he’ll be deposit a Tillman fastball into the bleachers tonight.
Shortstop – Alcides Escobar – Kansas City Royals
I’m going to load up in my outfield tonight and go with a value pick with Kansas City’s Alcides Escobar as my shortstop tonight. Escobar is hitting .271 with 3 homeruns, 38 RBI’s and 12 SB’s on the season. Escobar has a decent matchup against Matt Barnes of the Boston Red Sox who comes into this matchup with a 6.59 ERA and 1.87 WHIP. Barnes has really struggled this season against RHB’s as he is allowing RHB’s to post a .364 average, .636 slugging percentage, and 1.045 OPS. Escobar is hitting .280 over the past week and although I don’t expect him to deposit another baseball in the center field bleachers against, I like the fact he is hitting at the top of the Royals lineup and will only cost me $2400.
Third Base – Travis Shaw – Boston Red Sox
Travis Shaw has come out of nowhere for the Red Sox and is currently hitting .375 with 6 homeruns and 12 RBI’s in his first 25 MLB games. Shaw is hitting .448 over the past week with 3 doubles, 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s and is hitting .421 so far in the month of August. Shaw will be up against the right-handed Yordano Ventura who has struggled on the season with a 4.82 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. Shaw is hitting .354 against RHP’s and has an incredible .500 (25-50) at Fenway Park and I hope his success at Fenway continues tonight.
Outfield – Mike Trout – Los Angeles Angels
Mike Trout is only hitting .143 over the past week and .248 since the All-Star break, however, this is not going to scare me away from taking Trout who is hitting .295 on the season with 33 homeruns, 72 RBI’s and 10 SB. Trout will be up against Marco Estrada of the Toronto Blue Jays who comes into this matchup with a solid 3.20 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. Estrada is coming this matchup giving up 2 homeruns and his last start and although he is holding opposing hitters to just a .210 average, he doesn’t have an overpowering arsenal. Trout has a .294 average and .974 OPS against RHP on the season and as his price tag has dropped a bit with his recent slump, I think Trout has great value on Saturday night.
Outfield – A.J. Pollock – Arizona Diamondbacks
A.J. Pollock has been on absolute fire as of late as over the past week he is hitting .464 with 4 doubles, 1 triple, a homerun and 3 SB’s. On the season, Pollock is hitting .321 with 13 homeruns, 54 RBI’s and 32 SB’s. Pollock has a decent matchup against the right-handed Anthony DeSclafani of the Cincinnati Reds who comes into tonight’s matchup with a 3.72 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. DeSclafani is allowing RHB’s to post a .262 average against him on the season and has struggled at Great American Ball Park this season as in his 10 home starts, he is posting a 5.40 ERA. Pollock is 1 for 3 against DeSclafani in his career and is posting a .314 average against RHP on the season. Pollock is a great 5-tool player that can get it down with both his power and speed and I will hope he can continue is stellar week against Cincinnati tonight.
Outfield – Mookie Betts – Boston Red Sox
As you can tell, I’m stacking the red hot Red Sox hitters tonight and with my last OF spot, I’ll go with their talented center fielder in Mookie Betts. Betts is hitting .275 on the season with 10 homeruns, 57 RBI’s and 16 SB’s and has been great as of late hitting .393 over the past week. Betts will be up against Yordano Ventura of the Kansas City Royals on Saturday in which in his career, he is 2 for 3 with a double and RBI. Betts has actually fared better against RHP on the season as he is hitting .283 against RHP’s versus a .257 average versus LHP. Betts is hitting .299 at Fenway Park on the season and I think he is going to continue his hot streak tonight.
