Daily Fantasy Baseball – 8/24/15
Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
USA TODAY Sports
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Jason DeGrom – New York Mets
Jason DeGrom comes into tonight’s matchup with an incredible 1.98 ERA and 0.89 WHIP and as he has a favorable matchup against the weak hitting Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, I think he is worth every penny of his $11,700 price tag tonight. DeGrom has been masterful as of late and is also striking out batters as the right-hander is currently posting a 9.2 K/9 ratio and has a strikeout percentage of 26.6% which ranked 8th among qualified MLB starters. Philadelphia comes into this matchup ranked 27th in MLB in total runs scored and as a team is currently hitting .250 (11-44) against DeGrom. DeGrom has already faced the Phillies twice this season and in currently 1-0 with a 1.32 ERA with 12 K’s in 13.2 IP. In his last 16 starts, DeGrom has only given up more than 2 ER’s twice and as he is holding opposing batters to a .169 average since the All-Star Break, it’s safe to get DeGrom in your lineups tonight.
Catcher – Blake Swihart – Boston Red Sox
Blake Swihart has really found his comfort zone at the plate as the rookie catcher for the Red Sox is hitting an amazing .636 over the past week and .370 in the month of August. Swihart will be up against the right-handed Jeff Samardzija who comes into this matchup with a 4.64 ERA and 1.25 WHIP and although was able to go 8 innings in his recent matchup against the Red Sox, he still gave up 7 hits and 4 ER’s in that contest. Samardzija has given up 21 homeruns on the season and has had some difficulties against LHB’s as he is allowing LHB’s to post a .275 average and .810 OPS against him. Swihart is hitting just .273 on the season with a homerun and 22 RBI’s and has fared well as a LHB in which he is hitting .287. The Red Sox’s bats have been red hot as of late as they’ve scored at least 6 runs in 8 of their last 11 games and I’m hoping that both the Red Sox and Swihart can keep their hot bats going tonight.
First Base – Joey Votto – Cincinnati Reds
Joey Votto is having another great season as the veteran first baseman is hitting .308 on the season with 23 homeruns and 60 RBI’s and as he has one of the best matchups tonight going against the right-handed Buck Farmer of the Detroit Tigers, he is an easy selection for my first baseman on Monday. Votto is hitting just .278 over the last week as all of the Reds are struggling a bit during their 9 game losing streak, however, Votto still has been crushing the ball since the All-Star break posting a .391 average and 1.273 OPS. Buck Farmer has been working out of the bullpen as of late and the results have not been pretty as the right-hander is currently posting a 8.39 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in his 8 appearances (3 starts). Farmer is allowing opposing hitters to post a .346 average, .606 slugging percentage, and 1.025 OPS so far on the season. Votto has a .300 average and .977 OPS against RHP on the season and I expect him to have a big game in Cincinnati tonight.
Second Base – Jonathan Schoop – Baltimore Orioles
When I’ve needed to save money at second base Jonathan Schoop has been a popular choice of mine as of late and I’m once against going with Schoop tonight as he is currently hitting .296 with 9 homeruns and 27 RBI’s in just 50 games on the season. Schoop has slowed down a bit as of late but still is having a solid August as he is hitting .342 with 12 RBI’s in the month. Schoop will be up against the right-handed Kris Medlen who will be making his first start for the Royals this season. Medlen has been solid out of the bullpen outside of his first appearance of the season against the Pirates in late July and is currently posting a 2.51 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. Schoop has been great against RHP on the season as he is currently is posting a .322 average and .920 OPS against righties. Schoop is hitting .311 since the All-Star Break and for the cost of just $2400, is great value on Monday.
Shortstop – Eugenio Suarez – Cincinnati Reds
I’m going back to Eugenio Suarez as my SS tonight as the rookie shortstop out of Venezuela is currently hitting .302 on the season with 8 homeruns and 32 RBI’s. Suarez got the day off yesterday for some rest and has been hot as of late as he is hitting .348 over the past week and .307 so far in the month of August. Suarez has a great matchup against the right-hander Buck Farmer of the Detroit Tigers as I mentioned under Votto’s write-up, Farmer has a 8.39 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in 24.2 IP this season. Farmer has basically struggled against anyone this season and against RHB’s, he is allowing them to post a .308 average, .596 slugging percentage, and a .986 OPS. Suarez has been solid against RHP on the season hitting .293 with 5 homeruns and as he has hit .324 at Great American Ball Park, he is good option at the SS position tonight.
Third Base – Pablo Sandoval – Boston Red Sox
For the first time this season (and probably the last……) I’m going with Pablo Sandoval of the Boston Red Sox as the Panda has collected a hit in each of his last 6 games and has had good success against the right-handed Jeff Samardzija of the Chicago White Sox in his career. On the season, Sandoval is hitting just .259 with 10 homeruns and 40 RBI’s however, has fared much better against RHP as he is posting a .284 average and .803 OPS. In his career against Samardzija, Sandoval has posted a career .400 (4-10) average with 2 homeruns and 6 RBI’s. Sandoval has recently been moved up in the batting order as he is now hitting 2nd which helps brings a bit more value to him as he will be getting 4-5 AB’s a game and as has been solid against righties, is not a bad option for just $2400 today.
Outfield – Jay Bruce – Cincinnati Reds
Stacking Cincinnati hitters has not been a great play as of late however, I’m doing it tonight as I just can’t see how you don’t want at least 2 to 3 hitters against Buck Farmer on your team tonight. Jay Bruce, like many of the Reds, has really struggled as of late as he is hitting just .138 in the month of August and .095 over the past week. Bruce is hitting just .235 on the season but does have 18 homeruns and 68 RBI’s and with his pure power, can certainly go off for a multi-homer night at any time. I’ve already mentioned a bit about Buck Farmer above however, have yet to mention that against LHB’s on the season, Farmer is allowing LHB’s to post a .385 (20-52) average and 1.064 OPS against him. Bruce has really been up and down this season but as he is hitting a bit better at home (.243 w/ 11 HR’s), I think he is great play for an outfielder that will cost you under $3000 on Monday.
Outfield – Brett Gardner – New York Yankees
Brett Gardner has been having a rough August hitting just .213 however, the left fielder is still hitting a respectable .278 with 12 homeruns, 54 RBI’s and 18 SB’s on the season. Gardner has a good matchup against the right-handed Scott Feldman of the Houston Astros on Monday who comes into this matchup allowing the current Yankees roster to hit .290 against him in his career. Feldman has been surprisingly good as of late however, I don’t expect the right-hander with a career 4.44 ERA and 1.36 WHIP to have a good night at Yankee Stadium tonight. Gardner is hitting just .274 against RHP on the season but has been great at Yankee Stadium as he has posted a .298 average with 9 homeruns. Gardner has all 18 of his SB against RHP and if he can get on tonight, I can see Gardner using his legs to put up a big fantasy night.
Outfield – Franklin Gutierrez – Seattle Mariners
Franklin Gutierrez is having a nice season hitting .301 with 7 homeruns and 22 RBI’s in his 37 games played and as Seattle is going up against the left-handed Felix Doubront of the Oakland Athletics on Monday, I expect Gutierrez to get the start in left-field tonight. Gutierrez is having a great month of August as he is hitting .349 with 4 doubles, 4 homeruns, and 14 RBI’s in just 43 AB’s and currently has an impressive .935 OPS for the season. Doubront, who was recently acquired by the Athletics from the Blue Jays has pitched well so far for Oakland, however, still comes into this matchup with a career 4.71 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. Doubront is allowing RHB’s to post a .286 average and .767 OPS against him on the season. Gutierrez has been a monster against LHP on the season hitting .338 with a 1.011 OPS and I think he’ll continue his success against lefties tonight.
