Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
USA TODAY Sports
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Carlos Rodon – Chicago White Sox
I’m going with Carlos Rodon of the Chicago White Sox as although he comes into tonight’s matchup with a 4.22 ERA and 1.54 WHIP, he has been great as of late and has a decent matchup against the Seattle Mariners. In his last three games Rodon has gone a combined 22 IP while giving up just 3 ER while striking out 24 batters. Rodon is currently sporting a solid 9.6 K/9 ratio and has a strikeout percentage of 24.1%. Seattle comes into this game ranked 3rd in MLB in total strikeouts and has a strikeout percentage of 21.9% which ranked 26th in MLB. Rodon has been a bit wild at times as he has 58 walks in just 106.2 IP however, has done well limiting the big hits as teams have just a .401 slugging percentage against him. Rodon was solid against Seattle in his last outing last Saturday going 7 innings, giving up just 1 ER while striking out 8 and I think he’ll be able to put up a similar performance at home tonight.
Catcher – Kurt Suzuki – Minnesota Twins
Kurt Suzuki is hitting just .239 on the season with 4 HR’s and 41 RBI’s but has been hot as of late hitting .375 with 5 RBI’s over the past week and as he is going against a left-handed in Seattle’s Drew Smyly, he is going to be my pick at the catchers position tonight. Smyly comes into tonight’s matchup with a 3.42 ERA and 1.06 WHIP after missing the majority of the season due to a torn left labrum. In his limited action, Smyly has struggled giving up HR’s against RHB’s as he has allowed 6 HR’s in just 81 AB’s. Over his last three seasons, Suzuki has been solid against LHP’s as he has posted a .283 average and .717 OPS. Suzuki has collected at least 1 hit (3 multi-hit games) in 6 of the last 7 games he has started and I’m hoping that he can stay hot against Smyly and Tampa Bay tonight.
First Base – Jose Abreu – Chicago White Sox
Jose Abreu started off a bit slow after a monster rookie campaign but has picked it up over the last couple of months and is currently hitting .294 with 24 HR’s and 77 RBI’s on the season. Over the past week Abreu has fared well as he hit .290 with 4 doubles, 2 HR’s and 7 RBI’s. Abreu will be up against the lefty, Roenis Elias of the Seattle Mariners in which although he is just 1 for 5 in his career against, the one hit has been a HR. Elias comes into tonight’s game with a 4.22 ERA and 1.24 WHIP and will be making his first start since being recalled from Triple-AAA. Elias is allowing RHB’s to hit .241 on the season and post a .739 OPS. Elias has given up 11 HR’s in just 79 IP this season in which 10 of those HR’s have come against RHB’s. Abreu has posted a .299 average and .858 OPS at home this season and although he hasn’t had much success against LHP this season, I think he still is the best option at first base tonight.
Second Base – Daniel Murphy – New York Mets
Daniel Murphy is hitting .284 with 10 HR’s and 54 RBI’s this season and as he has had great success against the right-handed Aaron Harang of the Philadelphia Phillies I’m ok shelling out the $4200 to get him on my squad tonight. Like most of the Mets, Murphy has been hot as of late as he is hitting .304 over the past week and has posted a .330 average with 4 HR’s and 18 RBI’s in the month of August. Harang comes into tonight’s matchup with a 4.67 ERA and 1.35 WHIP and has struggled since the All-Star break posting a 7.00 ERA and allowing opposing batters to hit .325 against him. In his career against Harang, Murphy has posted a .346 (9-26) average and 1.024 OPS. Murphy is hitting .301 against RHP on the season and as of 9 of his 10 HR’s have comes against righties, I think he is in a good spot tonight to go deep.
Shortstop – Jhonny Peralta – St. Louis Cardinals
I don’t really fully understand why Jhonny Peralta only cost $2500 but I will take advantage of this gift as the shortstop is having a great season with the Cardinals hitting .284 with 16 HR’s and 58 RBI’s. Peralta hasn’t hit many HR’s so far in the second half of the season but has fared well as of late hitting .364 over the past week. Peralta will be up against Rubby De La Rosa of the Arizona Diamondbacks who comes in with a 4.32 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. De La Rosa has pitched well as of late however still has his struggled giving up the homerun ball as he has allowed 25 HR’s so far this season. Peralta has actually fared better against RHP on the season posting a .299 average and .776 OPS. Peralta is hitting .304 on the road this season and as he has collected at least one hit in 8 of his last 9 games, I think he is a good choice at SS tonight.
Third Base – David Wright – New York Mets
David Wright is hitting .310 with 2 HR’s and 5 RBI’s on the season although the simple size is quite small as he has just returned for an injury that has kept him sidelined since early April. I’m going with Wright tonight as similar to his teammate Daniel Murphy, Wright has had great success against the right-handed Aaron Harang of the Philadelphia Phillies. In his career against the right-hander, Wright has posted a .433 (13-30) average and 1.193 OPS with 8 RBI’s and 7 BB’s. As I mentioned under Wright’s write-up, Harang has really struggled since the All-Star break and is currently posting a 8.18 ERA in the month of August. Harang is allowing RHB’s to post a .264 average and .745 OPS against him on the season. Over the past three seasons, Wright is hitting .310 with a .879 OPS against the Phillies and I think he can continue to his success against Harang tonight.
Outfield – Starling Marte – Pittsburgh Pirates
Starling Marte is hitting .288 on the season with 15 HR’s and 62 RBI’s and I think him and other Pittsburgh RHB’s are a great pick tonight as they are up against the left-handed Justin Nicolino of the Miami Marlins. Marte is hitting .310 over the past week and has collected multi-hit games in 5 of his last 9 contests. Nicolino comes into tonight’s matchup with a 3.77 ERA and 1.19 WHIP however, the sample size is pretty small as he has only pitched in 5 games so far in 2015. Nicolino has had some issues with RHB’s as he is allowing RHB’s to post a .289 average and .795 OPS against him on the season. Marte is posting a .281 average and.816 OPS against LHB’s this season. Marte is hitting .309 since the All-Star Break and as I think the Pirates will be able to get to Nicolino tonight, I think any bat in the heart of the Pittsburgh lineup is a good choice tonight.
Outfield – Curtis Granderson – New York Mets
Curtis Granderson is hitting just .254 on the season however, has 22 HR’s and 55 RBI’s and as he is hitting out of the top spot against a hittable right-hander in Philadelphia’s Aaron Harang, I think Granderson is a good value pick at a cost of $3300. Like most of the Mets, Granderson has had a hot bat as of late as he is hitting .318 with 3 doubles over the past week. Unlike many of his teammates, Granderson hasn’t had much success against Aaron Harang however, as Harang as struggled so much as late, this don’t scare me away from Granderson. Granderson has posted a .281 average and .899 OPS against RHP on the season. Granderson has hit 21 of his 22 HR’s against RHP on the season and as Harang has given up at least one HR in 8 of his last 10 games, I think Granderson is a good pick tonight.
Outfield – Byron Buxton – Minnesota Twins
Byron Buxton, who is was rated the #1 prospect coming into this season, is starting to display some of his great potential in his first two games against Tampa Bay, and I’m going to hope that he continues this recent hot streak tonight against the left-handed Drew Smyly of Tampa Bay. Buxton is hitting just .239 with 2 RBI’s in his 67 AB’s this season, however is hitting .300 over the past week and has had 4 multi-hit games in his last 5 contests. Buxton is a 5-tool prospect and although the sample size is small, I think he is worth the chance tonight going against a left-hander that has had issues giving up HR’s against RHB’s.
