Daily Fantasy Baseball – 8/31/15

Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.

Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!

Pitcher – Chris Archer – Tampa Bay Rays

I think there is enough decent matchups out there tonight that I can spend big on pitching and after seeing the Baltimore Orioles struggled last night against Derek Holland, I’m going to spend the big bucks to get Chris Archer on my team tonight. Chris Archer comes into tonight’s matchup with a 2.88 ERA and 1.03 WHIP while striking out 217 batters in 175 IP. Archer currently is sporting a career best 11.2 K/9 and has a strikeout percentage of 30.64% (ranked 3rd in MLB). Archer is holding opponents to a .213 average and .580 OPS on the season. Baltimore ranks 4th in MLB in total strikeouts and is hitting just .252 against RHP on the season. Archer has struggled a bit against Baltimore early on this season however in his last outing on July 24th he was able to go 6 innings giving up just 1 run while striking out 9. Archer has reached double digit K’s in 3 of his last 4 outing and I’m banking on a solid performance at Camden Yards tonight.

Catcher – Evan Gattis – Houston Astros

Evan Gattis is having a typical year for him as the slugging DH is hitting just .240 on the season but has smashed 22 HR’s and 70 RBI’s. I’m going with Gattis tonight as he is hitting .318 with 3 HR’s over the past week and has a good matchup against the left-handed Vidal Nuno of the Seattle Mariners.  Nuno comes in with a stellar 2.88 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with the majority of his work coming from out of the bullpen, however, is allowing RHB’s to post a .263 average and .777 OPS against him. Nuno is currently posting 4.35 ERA in the month of August and has given up 6 HR’s in just 20.2 inning s of work for the month. Gattis is hitting much better at Minute Made Park this season posting a .269 average and .815 OPS and as he has more HR’s this season against the Mariners than any other team, I hope he can add on this total tonight.

First Base – Albert Pujols – Los Angeles Angels

Albert Pujols is hitting a career worst .247 this season (career .313 hitter) however, still has the power to get the ball out of the ball park as he currently has 34 HR’s and 75 RBI’s on the season. I’m going with Pujols tonight as although he is will be hitting in a pitchers park, he has a great matchup against a below-average left-hander in Oakland’s Felix Doubront. Doubront has pitched well in his limited time with Oakland since being acquired by Toronto in late July however, is still a pitcher that has a career 4.69 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. Doubront is currently allowing RHB’s to post a .294 average and .772 OPS against him this season. Pujols has been hitting well against Oakland this season posting a .295 average (13-44) and does have two HR’s this year at Coliseum. Pujols might not be hitting LHP as hard as he was in the prime of his career, but I don’t think he should struggled against Doubront and as he has proven he can still hit HR’s, he is a good pick tonight.

Second Base – Kelly Johnson – New York Mets

Kelly Johnson is only hitting .221 since being acquired by the Mets at the trade deadline however, as I need to save some money at the positon tonight, I like his matchup against the right-handed Jerad Eickhoff of the Philadelphia Phillies. On the season, Johnson is hitting .259 with 12 HR’s and 40 RBI’s and hasn’t been awful as of late as over the past week he is hitting .263 with a HR. Eickhoff will be making his third start of his young career and did a stellar job against the same Mets team last Wednesday as he allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 6 IP. Eickhoff has struggled against LHB’s as he is allowing them to post a .353 (6-17) average and .918 OPS. Johnson is hitting .253 against RHP on the season and has collected 11 of his 12 HR’s against righties. Johnson got the day off last week when Eickhoff on the mound, however, I expect him to be in the lineup tonight based on Eickhoff’s troubles against LHB’s and for a cost of just $2300, Johnson is a decent option tonight.

Shortstop – Addison Russell – Chicago Cubs

Addison Russell has really struggled at the plate over the past week hitting just .063 (1-16) however, as he has had success against Michael Lorenzen and certainly has the power to get us a HR, I’m going to take my chances with the Cubs rookie shortstop tonight. On the season Russell is hitting .241 with 9 HR’s and 35 RBI’s and even with his recent slump, is hitting .267 since the All-Star break. Russell has a great matchup against the right-handed Michael Lorenzen who comes into this game with a 5.46 ERA and 1.65 WHIP on the season. Lorenzen has been really awful as of late as in his 5 starts since the All-Star break, he has posted a 12.57 ERA. Lorenzen will be making his third start against the Cubs tonight and his first two starts weren’t pretty as he currently has an 8.68 ERA against the Cubs in 2015. In his career against Lorenzen, Russell is hitting .750 (3-4) and as Russell has fared much better against RHP on the season (.270 average), he is worth the roll of the dice tonight.

Third Base – Evan Longoria – Tampa Bay Rays

Evan Longoria comes into tonight’s matchup with a .267 average with 14 HR’s and 57 RBI’s and has a great matchup against the left-handed Wei-Yin Chen of the Baltimore Orioles. Although Longoria has struggled a bit this year, he still is crushing LHP to the tune of a .346 (37-107) average, .421 OBP, .533 slugging %, and a .954 OPS. Chen has pitched great for the Orioles this season posting a 3.17 ERA and 1.21 WHIP but still is allowing RHB’s to have a .789 OPS against him on the season. In his career against Chen, Longoria has posted a .290 average (9-31) and a .879 OPS. Longoria has hit better during night games this season as he has posted a .286 average and .772 OPS and does have 4 HR’s at Camden Yards over his past three seasons.

Outfield – Mike Trout – Los Angeles Angels

Mike Trout finally came through for my team last night as the reigning AL-MVP went 4 for 4 with a double, triple and RBI. On the season, Trout is putting up MVP numbers once against as the center fielder is hitting .298 with 33 HR’s, 74 RBI’s and 10 SB. Trout has a great matchup against the left-handed Felix Doubront in which he is hitting .400 (2-5) in his career against with two doubles. As I mentioned under the Pujols write-up, Doubront is a below average pitcher who comes into tonight’s game with a 4.69 ERA and 1.47 WHIP while allowing RHB’s to have a .294 average against him this season. Trout has been great on the road this season posting a .318 average and 1.004 OPS and as he is hitting .400 at Coliseum this season, he is once again a steal at a cost of just $4,000.

Outfield – Odubel Herrera – Philadelphia Phillies

Odubel Herrera is hitting .346 so far in the month of August with 2 HR’s and 8 RBI’s and as he is facing the hittable right-hander, Bartolo Colon of the New York Mets on Monday, he will be in my line up tonight. Herrera had a solid game last night going 4 for 4 (all singles) and is hitting .320 over the past week. On the season, Herrera is hitting .295 with 6 HR’s, 34 RBI’s and 14 SB. Colon comes into tonight’s matchup with a 4.65 ERA and 1.29 WHIP and has posted a 5.06 ERA since the All-Star break. Colon has struggled against LHB’s this season allowing LHB’s to post a .304 average and .792 OPS against him. Herrera is hitting .302 with 5 of his 6 HR’s against RHP on the season. Colon pitched well against Phillies recently, however, I don’t see the Phillies having trouble with Colon the second time around and as he has a tendency to give up HR’s (22 HR’s allowed this season), I like Herrera tonight.

Outfield – Jay Bruce – Cincinnati Reds

Jay Bruce didn’t come through for us yesterday but as I’m running out of salary and Bruce once again faces a hittable RHP in the Cubs Kyle Hendricks, I’m going to hope the Bruce can display some of the tremendous power he has at Wrigley Field tonight. On the season, Bruce is hitting just .234 but he does have 19 HR’s and 72 RBI’s. Bruce has fared better in a power standpoint against RHP this season as he has posted a .777 OPS with 16 of his 19 HR’s coming against righties. Hendricks comes into tonight’s game with a 4.11 ERA and 1.23 WHIP and was hit hard in his recent outing against the Reds in late July giving up 5 runs on 7 hits in just 6.0 IP. Hendricks is allowing LHB’s to post a .275 average and .789 OPS against him on the season. Bruce is always a risky pick as you’re really relying on the HR but at the same time, there are worse options to go with when you only have $2500 left to spend.
