MLB Picks for your MLB Daily Fantasy Leagues
September 2nd, 2015
Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
USA TODAY Sports
Pitcher – Taijuan Walker – Seattle Mariners
There are a lot of great pitchers on the mound tonight however, I’m going to take a chance on the right-handed Taijuan Walker of the Seattle Mariners as he has a good matchup against the strikeout prone Houston Astros. Walker comes into tonight’s matchup with a 4.53 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 145 K’s over 153.0 IP. Walker has a decent 8.5 K/9 ratio and a strikeout percentage of 22.69%. Houston certainly has some decent hitters in their lineup however, is ranked 2nd in MLB in total strikeouts and is only hitting .243 against RHP on the season which ranked 27th in MLB. Walker is holding opposing hitters to a .252 average on the season and has been better in the 2nd half of the season posting a 3.91 ERA. In his recent start against Houston Walker lasted 6.1 innings and while he did give up 3 ER, he was able to pile up 11 strikeouts and win during the game. Walker has a solid arsenal and has shown some flashes of his potential this season and if he can put together a game tonight, I could see him getting us 15-20 points at discounted price.
Catcher – Jonathan Lucroy – Milwaukee Brewers
Jonathan Lucroy is only hitting .258 with 7 HR’s and 37 RBI’s this season in 88 games but the 5 year veteran has really come on as of late hitting .444 over his past week and is currently riding a 9 game hitting streak. Lucroy has a great matchup against the left-handed Jeff Locke of the Pittsburgh Pirates who comes into this game with a 4.46 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. Locke has really struggled since the All-Star Break as he has posted a 5.36 ERA and has given up 7 HR’s in just 45.1 IP. In his career against Locke, Lucroy is hitting .381 (8-21) with 5 BB’s, 1 HR, and 4 RBI’s. Lucroy has struggled a bit against LHP this season but is starting to look more like the player that posted a .329 average and .923 against LHP in his previous three seasons. Lucroy’s price has skyrocketed during his current hot streak, but I still think you’re getting solid value tonight with Lucroy costing just $3400.
First Base – Jose Abreu – Chicago White Sox
Jose Abreu had a tremendous rookie season in 2014 and having another stellar season posting a .288 average with 24 HR’s and 80 RBI’s as of Wednesday. Abreu has been struggling a bit over the past week in which he is only hitting .179, however is coming off a decent August month in which he hit 6 HR’s and drove in 19 RBI’s. Abreu has a solid matchup against the left-handed Tommy Milone who comes into tonight’s matchup with a 3.86 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Although Milone’s numbers look decent on the surface, he currently has a 6.03 ERA since the All-Star Break in which he is allowing hitters to hit .293 against him. On the season Milone is allowing RHB’s to post a .285 average and .833 OPS against him. Abreu hasn’t fared that well against LHP this season but that doesn’t scare me as in 2014 he posted a .353 average and 1.099 OPS in 136 AB’s against LHP. Abreu has gotten a few hits off Milone in his career and I think Abreu will be able to snap out of his recent funk tonight in Minnesota against Milone.
Second Base – Jason Kipnis – Cleveland Indians
Jason Kipnis didn’t have a great game last night going a rare 0-5 against RHP but this isn’t going to prevent from going right back with him tonight as he faces the right-handed R.A. Dickey of the Toronto Blue Jays. On the season, Kipnis is hitting .315 with 7 HR’s, 45 RBI’s, and 11 SB and has been great against RHP posting a .352 average and .946 OPS. Dickey has been nothing more than average for the Blue Jays this season posting a 4.25 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. Dickey has given up at least 3 ER’s in each of his last 4 starts while also giving up 4 HR’s in that span. Dickey has pitched well at Rodgers Centre this season but is also allowing the current Cleveland roster to hit .271 against him in his career. Even with the 0-5 performance last night, Kipnis has been very solid against the Blue Jays this season as he has posted a .346 average and as he has a reasonable price tag of just $3600 and can certainly get us a SB tonight going against a knuckleballer, I think he had good value tonight.
Shortstop – Jimmy Rollins – Los Angeles Dodgers
I don’t love the SS options tonight and as I would rather save my money for 3B and OF, I’m going to take a chance with Jimmy Rollins of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jimmy Rollins is hitting just .222 on the season but he does have 13 HR’s, 41 RBI’s and 10 SB on the season and has a decent matchup against the right-handed Mike Leake of the San Francisco Giants. Leake has been solid this season posting a 3.53 ERA and 1.13 WHIP on the season. Leake was a bit roughed up against the Cardinals in his recent start lasting 6.1 innings while giving up 6 hits and 4 ER. Leake is holding opposing hitters to a solid .238 average this season but has struggled more against LHB allowing them to post a .261 average and .720 OPS. Rollins has 11 of his 13 HR’s against RHP on the season and as he has been recently batting at the top of the lineup, has some good value at a cost of just $2700.
Third Base – Nolan Arenado – Colorado Rockies
Nolan Arenado is hitting .280 on the season with 32 HR’s and 98 RBI’s and as he will be at Coors Field against a struggling Chase Anderson of the Arizona Diamondbacks, is well worth the $4500 it will cost you to get him in your lineups tonight. Anderson comes into this game with a 4.22 ERA and 1.30 WHIP on the season but sporting a 5.18 ERA and allowing opposing hitters to post a .323 average since the All-Star Break. Anderson who is a RHP, has actually struggled more against RHB’s this season allowing RHB’s to post a .280 average and .753 OPS. Arenado is hitting a solid .289 with 29 HR’s against RHP this season while hitting .308 at Coors Field. In his career against Anderson, Arenado is only hitting .214 (3-14) however, two of those hits have been for HR’s. Arenado has a great double-header yesterday going a combined 5-8 with 2 HR’s and 3 RBI’s and I think he’ll continue this type of hitting against tonight in Colorado.
Outfield – Lorenzo Cain – Kansas City Royals
Lorenzo Cain having a career season hitting .311 with 12 HR’s, 58 RBI’s and 26 SB’s and will be in my lineups tonight as he has one of the better matchups tonight against the left-handed Randy Wolf of the Detroit Tigers. The 39-year old Wolf has actually pitched well in his two starts with Detroit this season but this is still a pitcher that has a career 4.20 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. In his previous three years, Wolf has really struggled against RHB’s as he had allowed RHB’s to post a .326 average and .905 OPS against him. Cain has been absolutely great against LHP this season posting an incredible .351 average and .980 OPS. Cain his hitting .333 over the past week and as he the ability to display power & speed, he could have a monster day against Wolf and the Tigers.
Outfield – Ben Zobrist – Kansas City Royals
I’m going to stay in Kansas City and go with Ben Zobrist with my second OF pick of the night. Zobrist is hitting .284 on the season with 10 HR’s and 47 RBI’s and has been great since being acquired at the trade deadline as he is hitting .316 with 4 HR’s since he joined the Royals. As I mentioned above in Lorenzo Cain’s write-up, Zobrist has a great matchup against the left-handed Randy Wolf of the Detroit Tigers. Zobrist is a switch hitter and although he has shown more power as a LHB this season, he has a solid .310 average and .881 OPS as RHB which I imagine he will be tonight against the lefty Wolf. Zobrist has been great in front of the home crowd at Kauffman Stadium this season hitting at an impressive .357 mark and I think he’ll continue this success at home tonight.
Outfield – Adam Jones – Baltimore Orioles
Adam Jones has been struggling as of late hitting just .167 over the past week but the All-Star center fielder is still have a solid year hitting .277 with 24 HR’s and 67 RBI’s. Jones has a good matchup tonight against the right-handed Erasmo Ramirez who comes into this matchup with a 3.68 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. Ramirez has pitched well against Baltimore this season but I still like Jones tonight as he is allowing RHB’s to post a .282 average and .788 OPS against him this season and has a 4.71 ERA away from Tropicana Field. In his career against Ramirez, Jones has posted a .333 (3-9) average with 2 doubles. Jones has been decent against RHP this season hitting .272 with a .788 OPS and has hit .280 with 15 HR’s at Camden Yards. Jones price has gone down due to recent slump to just $3200 and I’m going to take advantage of this while I still can.
