Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 9/9/2015
MLB Picks for your MLB Daily Fantasy Leagues
September 9th, 2015
Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
USA TODAY Sports
Pitcher – Julio Teheran – Atlanta Braves
I do not love many of the top pitchers on today’s slate and decided to hope for a solid performance by the Julio Teheran of the Atlanta Braves. Teheran has had a down year for the Braves as he is currently posting a 4.51 ERA and 1.34 WHIP but had a decent matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. Teheran has a 7.7 K/9 ratio and has a strikeout percentage of 20.14% so far in the 2015 season. Philadelphia currently is hitting just .250 against RHP on the season and rank 17th in MLB in total strikeouts. Teheran has pitched well against the Phillies this season as in two starts he is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA while striking out 11 hitters in 14.0 IP. The Braves haven’t been able to hit much as of late but do face a very hittable pitcher in David Buchanan and as long as they can get 3 or 4 runs, I think Teheran can get us a 15-20 points night on FanDuel.
Catcher – Buster Posey – San Francisco Giants
Buster Posey has been on absolute fire as of late as the veteran catcher is currently hitting .480 over the past week with three doubles and a HR. On the season, Posey has once again been outstanding hitting .329 with 17 HR’s and 82 RBI’s. Posey will be up against Zack Godley of the Arizona Diamondbacks who comes into this matchup with a 3.62 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 4 starts this season. Godley was roughed up a bit in his recent outing against the Cubs allowing 6 runs on 4 hits and 6 walks. Posey has been great against RHP’s on the season as he has posted a .328 average and .867 OPS. Posey is hitting .345 (19-35) against the Diamondbacks on the season and as he is currently riding a 10 game hitting streak, he is solid play into your lineups tonight.
First Base – Freddie Freeman – Atlanta Braves
Freddie Freeman has battled through some injuries this season but the franchise first baseman for the Braves is still having a decent season as he is currently hitting .280 with 16 HR’s and 52 RBI’s. Freeman has a great matchup against the right-handed David Buchanan of the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday as Buchanan comes into today’s matchup with a 9.00 ERA and 1.96 WHIP in 49 IP this season. Buchanan is allowing opposing hitters to post a .355 average and .997 OPS against him this season and is allowing LHB to post a .586 slugging percentage and 1.011 OPS. Freeman is 3 for 12 with a HR against Buchanan in his career and is posting a .295 average and .908 OPS against RHP on the season. Freeman is hitting .292 so far in the month of September and I imagine this average will go up after going against Buchanan tonight.
Second Base – Jason Kipnis – Cleveland Indians
Jason Kipnis has gotten off to a rocky September as he is hitting just .111 (3-27) for the month however, the All-Star second baseman is still having an outstanding season as he has hit .307 with 7 HR’s, 45 RBI’s and 11 SB. Kipnis has a decent matchup against the right-handed Jeff Samardzija of the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday who has had a down season posting a 4.87 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. Samardzija has struggled as of late as he has given up at 5 or more ER’s in 5 of his last 7 starts. Samardzija is allowing LHB’s to post a .282 average and .830 OPS against him on the season. Even with his recent struggles, Kipnis is still having a great year against RHP as he has posted a .346 average and .927 OPS against righties. Kipnis has struggled against the White Sox this season but for a price of just $3100, Kipnis has great value going up against a RHP tonight.
Shortstop – Xander Bogaerts – Boston Red Sox
Generally, I’ve only been going with Xander Bogaerts when he is facing a left-handed pitcher, however as he has some good career success against Drew Hutchison of the Toronto Blue Jays, I’m going to go with the Red Sox shortstop tonight. Bogaerts is having a great season as although he hasn’t shown much power (only 5 HR’s) he is hitting .317 with 71 RBI’s. Hutchison comes in with a 13-3 record, but when you really look at the stats, you’ll find he is not having that great a season as he currently is posting a 5.07 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. Hutchison has been terrible on the road this season as in 11 starts he has posted a 9.00 ERA. In his career against Hutchison, Bogaerts is hitting .500 (7-14) with two doubles. Bogaerts is hitting .297 against RHP and .344 at Fenway Park on season and as he has also been automatic when he has runners in scoring position, he is a good play tonight.
Third Base – Nolan Arenado – Colorado Rockies
Nolan Arenado has been red hot in the month of September as the Rockies third baseman is currently hitting .444 (16-36) with 7 HR’s and 12 RBI’s. Arenado has had a great season as he has posted a solid .286 average with 37 HR’s and 107 RBI’s. I’m going with Arenado tonight as he has a great matchup against the right-handed James Shields of the San Diego Padres. Shields comes into tonight’s game with a 3.83 ERA and 1.32 WHIP but has struggled keeping the ball in the park as he has given up 28 HR’s this season. Shields has picked up two wins against the Rockies this season but hasn’t pitched great against them as he comes in with a 4.96 ERA and has given up 22 hits (5 HR’s) against Colorado in 2015. Arenado has crushed Shields in the past as in his career he is hitting .571 (8-14) with 3 HR’s. Arenado has fared well at PETCO park this season hitting .296 with 4 HR’s and I’m hoping he can continue his success against Shields and the Padres tonight.
Outfield – Carlos Gonzalez – Colorado Rockies
Similar to Nolan Arenado, Carlos Gonzalez has also been red hot in the month of September and as he has also fared well against James Shields, I’m going with Gonzalez with my first outfield pick of the night. For the month of September, Gonzalez is hitting .321 with 5 HR’s and 14 RBI’s and on the season Gonzalez is hitting .272 with 36 HR’s and 86 RBI’s. In his career against Shields, Gonzalez is hitting .438 (7-16) with 2 HR’s and 3 RBI’s. Shields has had more difficulties with LHB’s as on the season he is allowing LHB’s to post a .273 average, .514 slugging percentage, and .871 OPS. Shields has given up 19 of his 28 HR’s against LHB’s on the season. Gonzalez hasn’t had much success against San Diego this season but as he is hitting .295 with 23 HR’s since the All-Star Break and has had success against Shields, I think he is a good option tonight.
Please Note: Please ensure that the next two picks are in the lineup as Nolan Reimold has been getting starts for the injured Adam Jones (day-to-day w/ a shoulder injury) and Corey Dickerson just came off the DL. If Adam Jones is playing, as he has had good success against CC Sabathia, I would look into picking him up and grabbing another low cost/high value player like Andre Ethier tonight who is going up against a RHP.
Outfield – Corey Dickerson – Colorado Rockies
Dickerson has battled injuries throughout the season however, could be in the lineup tonight as he was active from the DL yesterday and did make a pinch-hit appearance in last night’s game. When Dickerson has been able to play, he been solid as he has posted a .313 average with 5 HR’s and 18 RBI’s in 44 games played this season. As I mentioned in Carlos Gonzalez’s write-up, Shield is allowing LHB’s to post a .514 slugging percentage and .871 OPS against him this season. Dickerson is only 2 for 11 against Shields in his career however, one of those hits has been a HR. Dickerson has hit all 5 of his HR’s this season against RHP to go along with a .314 batting average and if he gets the start tonight, I like stacking him with Gonzalez and Arenado.
Outfield – Nolan Reimold – Baltimore Orioles
Nolan Reimold was designated for assignment a few weeks ago but after no one claimed him, the Orioles decided to pick up his contract this past Saturday as another hitting option off the bench. Although Reimold will be seeing limited starts, with Adam Jones battling a shoulder injury, Reimold has seen a few starts over the past few days and with his success against CC Sabathia, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the starting lineup tonight. Reimold is hitting just .234 on the season with 3 HR’s and 9 RBI’s in 107 AB’s, but has been great against Sabathia as in his career he has posted a .367 (11-30) average with a triple and two HR’s. Sabathia, who is making his first start since 8/23, has really struggled this season posting a 5.27 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. Sabathia has really struggled against RHB’s allowing them to post a .327 average and .908 OPS against him this season. Reimold is certainly a risky play, but for $2500, he has some decent value tonight if he gets the start against Sabathia.
