MLB Picks for your MLB Daily Fantasy Leagues
September 10th, 2015
Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
USA TODAY Sports
Pitcher – Jake Arrieta – Chicago Cubs
Jake Arrieta has become the true “Ace” of the Cubs staff as the right-hander is currently posting an 18-6 record with a 2.03 ERA and 0.92 WHIP while striking out 197 batters in 191.0 IP. Arrieta has been untouchable as of late as he hasn’t given up a run in his last 29.0 IP which included a no-hitter against the Dodgers on 8/30. Arrieta is currently posting a 9.3 K/9 ratio and has a strikeout percentage of 26.77% which ranks 9th among qualified MLB starters. Arrieta has a solid matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night who come into the contest hitting just .249 against RHP. Arrieta did surrender 3 runs in his first contest against the Phillies earlier this season but did strikeout 8 hitters in that contest. Arrieta has posted a 0.91 ERA with 74 K’s in 69.1 IP since the All-Star Break and is worth the investment tonight.
Catcher – Russell Martin – Toronto Blue Jays
Russell Martin has really struggled since the All-Star Break and is currently hitting just .237 with 17 HR’s and 57 RBI’s. Martin was able to put together a few nice games at the end of August against the Tigers, but overall is hitting just .205 since the All-Star Break. Martin will be up against Luis Severino of the New York Yankees on Thursday. Severino comes into the game with a stellar 2.04 ERA and 1.19 WHIP but has given up 4 HR’s in his 6 career starts. Severino had his worst start of the season against the Blue Jays in mid-August giving up 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in 6.0 IP. Martin is hitting .294 against the Yankees on the season and although he is certainly a risky pick, the fact that he does have the pop in his bat to hit HR’s makes him a decent value at $2500.
First Base – Freddie Freeman – Atlanta Braves
Freddie Freeman had a solid overall game for my team last night going 2-4, 1 HBP, 1 R, and 2 RBI’s and I’m going to roll with Freeman against as he has a solid matchup against the right-handed Bartolo Colon of the New York Mets. On the season, Freeman is hitting .283 with 16 HR’s and 54 RBI’s. Freeman has been hot as of late as he is currently hitting .321 with a HR and 9 BB’s in the month of September. Colon has actually pitched great in his last two outing, but I just don’t believe he can string together three outstanding outings together. Colon currently is posting a 4.18 ERA and 1.24 WHIP on the season and has given up 22 HR’s. In his career against Colon, Freeman has dominated as he has posted a .444 (8-18) average w/ three doubles. Colon is allowing the current Braves roster to hit .310 against him in his career, and I think that the Braves and Freeman will have a good night on Thursday.
Second Base – Javier Baez – Chicago Cubs
I feel that the Cubs have one of the better stacking possibilities tonight with their RHB’s facing the left-handed Adam Morgan and due to this, I’m taking the Javier Baez as my second baseman tonight. In the 8 games that Baez has played since being called up, he has posted a solid .320 average with a homerun and 3 RBI’s. Morgan comes into tonight’s game with a 4.42 ERA and 1.24 WHIP and has been hit hard by RHB’s as he is allowing RHB’s to post a .281 average, .516 slugging percentage, and .841 OPS. Morgan was hit hard in his recent outing giving up 6 runs on 8 hits in 6.1 IP against the Red Sox last Friday. Baez is one of the many very talented Cubs rookies and as he hit .324 with 13 HR’s and 61 RBI’s in 70 games down at Triple AAA this season, he is a decent choice for just $2600 tonight.
Shortstop – Addison Russell – Chicago Cubs
I’m going to stay in Chicago and go with the other talented rookie middle infielder in Addison Russell as my shortstop tonight. Russell is hitting just .243 on the season but does have 13 HR’s and 44 RBI’s. Russell has been hitting better since the All-Star Break as he has posted a .268 average and .791 OPS (8 HR’s). Russell has been on fire as of late as over the past week he is hitting .300 (6-20) with 3 HR’s and 6 RBI’s. Russell hasn’t fared great against LHP on the season but I think this is a good matchup for tonight going against the lefty Adam Morgan. Russell loses some value as he bats at the bottom of the Cubs lineup but as I need to continue to save money as I went with Arrieta, I’m hoping that Russell can continue his hot hand against Philadelphia on Thursday night.
Third Base – Todd Frazier – Cincinnati Reds
Even though Todd Frazier has had a lackluster 2nd half of his MLB season, there is absolutely no way that he should have the same price tag as Jon Diaz of the Blue Jays or Eric Campbell of the Mets. Frazier is hitting .258 on the season but does have 31 HR’s and 80 RBI’s. Frazier had a nice game last night going 1-2 with a solo HR and a BB. Frazier has a tough matchup against the left-handed Jamie Garcia of the St. Louis Cardinals but has done well against L HP on the season posting a .265 average, .647 slugging percentage, and .946 OPS. Garcia has been one of the better pitchers in the NL posting a 1.89 ERA and 0.95 WHIP however, as Frazier is priced at just $2200 and is going against LHP, he still has good value if you need to save money.
(If you go with an affordable pitcher, I would strongly consider Kris Bryant in this spot against the left-handed Adam Morgan).
Outfield – Dexter Fowler – Chicago Cubs
For my last Cubs in my stack today, I’m going to go with Dexter Fowler. Fowler is hitting just .253 on the season but does have 17 HR’s, 42 RBI’s and 17 SB’s on the season. Fowler has been outstanding since the All-Star break as he has posted a .293 average, .547 slugging percentage, and .966 OPS. Fowler will be up against the left-handed Adam Morgan of Philadelphia which is good news for Fowler as he has posted a .314 average and .854 OPS against LHP on the season. Over the last three seasons, Fowler has hit .327 against the Phillies and with a great matchup tonight, I think Fowler could have a big day at the plate.
Outfield – Gregory Polanco – Pittsburgh Pirates
Gregory Polanco has been hitting up as of late as the Pirates right fielder is hitting .286 over the past week and is now hitting .262 with 7 HR’s, 42 RBI’s and 24 SB on the season. Polanco had a nice game last night against Cincinnati going 2-4 with a 2B, 2 R’s and a SB. Polanco has a favorable matchup against the right-handed Wily Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers who comes into tonight’s matchup with a 4.21 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. Peralta has really struggled against LHB’s on the season allowing LHB’s to post a .303 average and .870 OPS against him. Polanco is hitting better against RHP on the season posting a .275 average and .746 OPS. Polanco has 23 of his 24 SB’s against RHP on the season. Polanco struggled a bit earlier this season but has started to turn it around as of late and as he has both power and speed, is a good pick against righty tonight for just $3100.
Outfield – Jay Bruce – Cincinnati Reds
With my last outfield pick I’m going to go with Jay Bruce of the Cincinnati Reds as he is really the best option I have when it comes to my options with the salary that I have left. Bruce has a tough matchup against Jamie Garcia of the St. Louis Cardinals but has actually had at least some success off the left-hander in his career. On the season Bruce is hitting .234 but does have 20 HR’s and 75 RBI’s and has been hitting better as of late as he has posted a .350 (7-20) average over the past week. In his career against Garcia, Bruce is 9-39 (.231) but does have a HR against him. Bruce has never been much of a hitter when it comes to average (career .249 hitter) but there is no denying that he has incredible power and I’m hoping that he can just connect on one pitch against Garcia tonight.
