MLB Picks for your MLB Daily Fantasy Leagues
September 17th, 2015
Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
USA TODAY Sports
Pitcher – John Lackey – St. Louis Cardinals
John Lackey is having a great first full season with the St. Louis cardinals as the veteran right-hander is currently posting a 2.89 ERA and 1.23 WHIP while recording 149 strikeouts in 193.0 IP. Lackey has been one of the most consistent pitchers in MLB this season and has lasted at least 6.0 IP in his last 17 starts. I’m going with Lackey tonight as I like his matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers in which he has posted a 2.70 ERA in three starts against the Brewers this season including 16 strikeouts in 20 IP. Lackey has an average K/9 ratio at 6.9 and a strikeout rate of 18.65%. Milwaukee is currently hitting .259 and has the 11th most strikeouts in MLB against RHP on the season. Lackey isn’t going to light up the FanDuel scoreboard but as it’s a day in which their isn’t many great options at pitcher, I think Lackey is a safe pick that can get us 6-8 IP, 5-8 K’s and a win.
Catcher – Matt Wieters – Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore is going to be a popular stack play today as they face the left-handed Matt Moore tonight and as Matt Wieters got a day off last night, I imagine he’ll be in the lineup tonight against Moore. Wieters has battled some injuries throughout the season and only has played 65 games hitting .256 with 6 HR’s and 19 RBI’s. Moore has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball this season as in his 8 starts, the lefty has posted a 8.42 ERA and 1.93 WHIP. Moore was recently hit extremely hard by the Boston Red Sox last Saturday as he gave up 6 ER’s on 9 hits (4 HR’s!). Wieters has owned Matt Moore in his career as he has posted an incredible .571 (8-14) average with 2 HR’s and for the price tag of just $2400, he is a great value pick tonight.
First Base – Justin Smoak – Toronto Blue Jays
I’m going to have to make sure Smoak is playing as the Blue Jays currently doesn’t have the DH spot playing in Atlanta, but if Justin Smoak is playing tonight I like his matchup against the right-handed Matt Wisler of the Atlanta Braves. On the season, Smoak is hitting just .223 but the slugging first baseman does have 16 HR’s and 49 RBI’s and is hitting .267 with 2 HR’s over the past week. Wisler comes into this matchup with a 5.60 ERA and 1.62 WHIP and has really struggled against LHB’s allowing LHB’s to post a .350 average and 1.066 OPS against him on the season. Smoak has hit 12 of his 16 HR’s against RHP’s on the season and is hitting .333 (2-6) with a HR against the Braves on the season. You’ll have to make Smoak is in the lineup tonight but if he is, I think he and the Blue Jays will have a good night in Atlanta.
Second Base – Brian Dozier – Minnesota Twins
Brian Dozier has had a tough September hitting just .164 with a HR for the month and although the scrappy second baseman is hitting just .236 on the season, he does have 27 HR’s and 70 RBI’s. I’m going with Dozier tonight as he a decent matchup against the left-handed Hector Santiago of the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night. Santiago comes into the game with a decent 3.21 ERA and 1.22 WHIP but has had trouble with the HR ball this season giving up 24 HR’s in 165.1 IP. Santiago has given up 22 HR’s against RHB this season. In his career against Santiago, Dozier has posted a .364 average and .909 OPS. Dozier has a .769 OPS against LHP this season and I have feeling that he is going to break out of his month long slump tonight at home at Target Field.
Shortstop – Francisco Lindor – Cleveland Indians
Francisco Lindor has been on absolute fire as of late as the rookie shortstop is hitting .429 over the past week and .365 for the month of September. On the season, in his first 82 games of his MLB career, Lindor is hitting .317 with 9 HR’s, 41 RBI’s and 8 SB’s. Lindor will be up against the hard throwing Yordano Ventura of the Kansas City Royals in which the rookie has yet to face in his young career. Ventura has pitched well in the 2nd half of the season but is still posting a 4.42 ERA and 1.34 WHIP and has given up 4 ERs in each of his last two starts. As a LHB, Lindor has posted a .303 average and .812 OPS. Lindor has been solid against the Royals this season posting a .360 (9-25) average with 3 HR’s and 12 RBI’s and I’m hoping that this success continues tonight.
Third Base – Matt Carpenter – St. Louis Cardinals
Matt Carpenter paid off for me last night and I’m going to go right back with him tonight as the third baseman has a decent matchup against the right-handed Jimmy Nelson of the Milwaukee Brewers. Carpenter is hitting .261 on the season with 22 HR’s and 74 RBI’s and as I mentioned had a big night last night going 3 for 4 with a BB, HR, and two 2B. Nelson comes into this matchup with a 3.95 ERA and 1.27 WHIP on the season but has been hit hard by the Cardinals as in his two starts this season, he is posting a 7.50 against St. Louis. Carpenter has been better against RHP on the season as he has posted a .278 average and .884 OPS. In his career against Nelson, Carpenter is hitting .364 (4-11) with a HR and 5 RBI’s. Carpenter has a rough middle of the season but as he is starting to look against like the player we saw at the beginning of the season, he is a great play for just $3100.
Outfield – Bryce Harper – Washington Nationals
Bryce Harper has been on absolute fire again as the Nationals right-fielder and likely NL MVP is hitting .417 so far for the month of September and .381 over the past week with 4 HR’s and 7 RBI’s. Harper has had a monster season posting a .338 average with 40 HR’s and 92 RBI’s and I like him tonight as he faces a below average right-hander in Jarred Cosart of the Miami Marlins. Cosart comes into this matchup with a 4.58 ERA and 1.36 WHIP and has given up 8 HR’s in 55 IP this season. Cosart has been surprisingly good this year against LHB’s but at the same time, Harper in not your normal LHB as he has posted a .319 average, .719 slugging percentage, and 1.201 OPS against RHP this season. Harper is hitting .298 with 6 HR’s and 13 RBI’s against the Marlins this season and I think he’ll add NL leading HR total tonight.
Outfield – Adam Jones – Baltimore Orioles
I’m shocked that Adam Jones is still valued under the $3000 mark and l believe that he is almost an automatic pick this evening going up against the left-handed Matt Moore up the Tampa Bay Rays. Jones is hitting .272 on the season with 27 HR’s and 78 RBI’s and has been decent in the past week hitting .280 with 2 HR’s. Moore comes in with an 8.42 ERA and 1.93 WHIP in his 8 starts this year and is allowing RHB’s to hit an incredible .386 against him on the season. In his only start this season against the Orioles, Moore lasted just 5.0 innings giving up 5 ER’s on 8 hits. Jones has been decent against LHP’s this season posting a .274 average and .797 OPS. Jones has absolutely owned Moore in the past as in his career he has posted a .524 (11-21) average and 1.422 OPS and should be in all your lineups tonight.
Outfield – Colby Rasmus – Houston Astros
Colby Rasmus is hitting just .237 on the season but does have 19 HR’s and 50 RBI’s and has been hot as of late hitting .368 over the past week. Rasmus should get the start tonight as he is facing the right-handed Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers tonight. Lewis pitched an absolute gem in his last start against Oakland however, is still a pitcher posting a 4.45 ERA and 1.21 WHIP and has a career 4.78 ERA. Lewis has allowed 24 HR this season and is currently allowing LHB’s to post a .263 average and .733 OPS against him. In his career against Lewis, Rasmus is hitting .278 (5-18) with a HR. Against RHP’s this season, Rasmus has posted a .738 OPS as 15 of his 19 HR’s have come against righties. Rasmus has been solid against the Rangers this season hitting at a .304 (14-46) mark and as he certainly has the power this hit HR’s, is a decent choice at $2900.
