Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins
Tyler Duffey has put together a strong rookie campaign since being called up in the beginning of August as in his 8 starts on the season, the right-hander is posting a 3.15 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. Duffey was hit hard in his first start of his career against Toronto listed just 2 innings while giving up 6 ER’s however, in his past seven starts, Duffey has only given up 2 ER’s or less in six of those seven starts. Duffey currently is posting an 8.7 K/9 ratio and has a strikeout percentage of 22.9%. Duffey has a solid matchup against the Detroit Tigers who currently rank 16th in MLB in total strikeouts and are hitting just .233 over the past week. Duffey was solid in his only start against Detroit season as he lasted 6.1 IP while giving up just 1 ER while striking out 7 and I’m hoping that he can put up a similar performance on Saturday night.
Catcher – Dustin Garneau – Colorado Rockies
Dustin Garneau is only hitting .164 with 2 HR’s and 8 RBI’s since being called up in mid-August, however, there is not denying that the rookie catcher has some decent power and with a solid matchup against the left-handed Brett Anderson of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Anderson comes into the game posting a .352 ERA and 1.33 WHIP but has struggled against Colorado as he is allowing the current Rockies roster to hit .324 against him in his career. Anderson has struggled a bit against RHB’s this season as he is allowing RHB’s to post a .281 average and .752 OPS on the season. Prior to being called up to the Rockies, Garneau hit .274 with 15 HR’s and 61 RI’s in 81 games in Triple AAA this season. Garneau will be home at Coors Field on Saturday which gives him some extra value and as Anderson has shown this season that he can give up HR’s to RHB’s, I’m going to take my chances with Garneau this Saturday.
First Base – Paul Goldschmidt – Arizona Diamondbacks
Paul Goldschmidt has had a rough second half of the season by his high standards as the slugging first baseman is hitting just .289 since the All-Star break, however, Goldschmidt has started to heat up again recently as he is hitting .385 with 3 HR’s and 4 RBI’s over the past week. On the season, Goldschmidt has been outstanding posting a .318 average with 31 HR’s, 105 RBI’s and 21 SB’s. Goldschmidt has a great matchup against the left-handed Robbie Erlin of the San Diego Padres who comes in the match up with a 21.00 ERA and 3.33 WHIP after making just one start this season. Erlin was roughed up for 7 ERS on 9 hits in just 3.0 IP last Saturday in Colorado. Goldschmidt has been outstanding against LHP’s this season as he has posted a .374 average and 1.117 OPS. Goldschmidt is hitting .321 (17-53) with 3 HR’s and 12 RBI’s against the Padres this season and with such a favorable matchup against Erlin, Goldschmidt should be in for a big day.
Second Base – DJ LeMahieu – Colorado Rockies
DJ LeMahieu is having a solid season with the Rockies as the 2nd baseman is currently hitting .302 with 6 HR’s, 56 RBI’s and 23 SB’s. LeMahieu has a decent matchup against the left-handed Brett Anderson of the Dodgers who is allowing RHB’s to hit .286 against him on the season. Anderson has given up 16 of his 17 HR’s against RHB’s this season. In his career against Anderson, LeMahieu has posted a .286 (2-7) average. LeMahieu has been solid against LHP’s as on the season he has posted a .306 average and .750 OPS against lefties. LeMahieu has been great at Coors Field as he has posted a .317 average and .793 OPS. LeMahieu is hitting .305 during night games on the season and as I like his matchup against the lefty Anderson, I think LeMahieu has good value for just $3000 at home on Saturday night.
Shortstop – Francisco Lindor – Cleveland Indians
Francisco Lindor has been absolutely outstanding in his rookie campaign as the rookie shortstop is currently hitting .317 with 10 HR’s, 45 RBI’s and 8 SB. Lindor has been on fire as of late as over the past week he is hitting .400 (10-25) with a double, triple, and a HR. Lindor will be going up against the right-handed Kris Medlen of the Kansas City Royals who comes into the matchup with a 3.51 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. Medlen has been solid in his six starts this season and is currently allowing opposing hitters to post a .236 average and .650 OPS against him on the season. In his career against Medlen, Lindor has posted a .667 (2-3) average with a double. As a LHB this season, Lindor has posted a .310 average and .809 OPS. Lindor has been great against the Royals as he has posted a .333 (10-30) average with 3 HR’s and 12 RBI’s and I except him to continue this type of success against the Royals on Saturday night.
Third Base – Trevor Plouffe – Minnesota Twins
Trevor Plouffe has been decent for the Minnesota Twins this season as although Plouffe is hitting just .247 on the season, he does have 21 HR’s and 82 RBI’s. Plouffe has had a solid month of September as for the month he has posted a .275 average with 3 HR’s and 12 RBI’s. Plouffe has a solid matchup against the right-handed Alfredo Simon of the Detroit Tigers on Saturday who comes into the contest posting a 5.21 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. Simon has really struggled since the All-Star break in his 12 starts since the break, he has posted 6.15 ERA while giving up 14 HR’s in 71.2 IP. Simon was hit hard in his recent start against the Royals as he lasted just 4.1 innings giving up 8 ER’s on 13 hits (3 HR’s). In his career Simon, Plouffe is hitting .400 (4-10). Plouffe has posted a .246 average and .737 OPS against RHP’s this season and with Simon struggled as of late, I think Plouffe is a great play on Saturday for a cost of just $2800.
Outfield – A.J. Pollock – Arizona Diamondbacks
A.J. Pollock is having a breakout season with the Arizona Diamondbacks as the five-tool center fielder is currently hitting .318 with 19 HR’s, 75 RBI’s and 36 SB’s on the season. Pollock is currently hitting .357 with a HR over the past week and has had a solid month of September in which he has hit .296. Pollock has a great matchup against the left-handed Robbie Erlin who comes into this game with a career 4.99 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. Erlin was hit hard in his only start this season as he gave up 7 ER’s in just 3.0 IP against the Rockies. Erlin posted a 5.60 ERA in Triple AAA this season and is currently allowing opposing hitters to post a .529 average and 1.203 OPS. Pollock has posted a .328 average and .897 OPS against LHP’s this season and has a .315 average on the road this season. Pollock had a monster night on Friday as he went 2 for 4 with a HR and 5 RBI’s and I except him and the Diamondbacks to have another big game against the Padres on Saturday.
Outfield – Justin Upton – San Diego Padres
Justin Upton is only hitting .252 on the season but does have an impressive 26 HR’s and 80 RBI’s on the season. Upton is currently in the midst of a 0-14 slump but is a good option on Saturday night as he has a great matchup against the right-handed Jeremy Hellickson of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Hellickson comes into the game with a 4.73 ERA and 1.34 WHIP and recently lasted just an inning, giving up 5 runs (3 ERS) on 3 hits and 2 BB against the Padres on September 14th. Hellickson is currently allowing opposing hitters to post a .263 average, .456 slugging percentage, and a .775 OPS against him on the season. Upton has been great against Hellickson as in his career, Upton has posted a .455 (5-11) with 2 doubles, 2 HR’s and 4 RBI’s. Upton has fared much better against RHP’s this season as he has posted a .271 average and .861 OPS against righties, compared to a .191 average and .558 OPS against LHP. Upton has been solid against the Diamondbacks this season posting a .310 average and 1.023 OPS (5 HR’s) and I’m hoping he can break out of his current slump against Arizona on Saturday night.
Outfield – Stephen Piscotty - St. Louis Cardinals
Stephen Piscotty has been great in his rookie campaign with the St. Louis cardinals as the left-fielder is currently hitting .312 with 6 HR’s and 38 RBI’s on the season. Piscotty has been solid over the past week as he has hit .292 with 2 HR’s and 7 RBI’s. Piscotty had a good matchup on Saturday night as he will be going up against the right-handed Tyler Wagner of the Milwaukee Brewers who comes in with a 12.27 ERA and 2.73 WHIP after making just one start this season back in May. Wagner was hit hard in that one start against the Arizona Diamondbacks as he lasted just 3.2 innings, giving up 5 ER’s on 9 hits (1 HR). Piscotty has been great against RHP’s this season as he has posted a .302 average and .840 OPS. Piscotty is hitting .304 (7-23) with a HR and 7 RBI’s against the Brewers on the season. Piscotty has collected at least one hit in six of his last seven games and for a cost of just $3100, Piscotty is a great value play on Saturday night.
