Fantasy Baseball Update 4/7/16: Key Matchups This Weekend

It’s time to start looking ahead to our first full weekend of action in the 2016 fantasy baseball season. Now that we’re starting to get a feel for some teams’ and players’ capabilities, let’s check out the waiver wire and see which guys look like they’ve got solid matchups looming for these upcoming games.

Yasmany Tomas, 3B/OF, Arizona Diamondbacks: Tomas didn’t play in the Wednesday finale against the Rockies, but he did enough damage in the first two games to warrant consideration in fantasy leagues.
Tomas put up a 3-for-7 line in those two matchups, providing three RBI and one run. The D-Backs will need his bat in this series against the incoming Cubs, where there’s bound to be a plethora of runs scored.

Matt Szczur, OF, Chicago Cubs: Speaking of the Cubs, let’s check out Szczur (we’ll wait as you try to pronounce his name). He helped Chicago to a pair of wins in their first two games, with a 3-for-5 line, four RBI and a homer to his credit.
The Cubs have a nice assortment of pieces they can cobble together at any given time, and Szczur is part of that puzzle. Any time he’s starting he’s a nice deep-league pickup for those owners on the Cubs bandwagon.

Jeremy Hellickson, SP, Philadelphia Phillies: Now let’s move on to the mound and visit with Hellickson, who is coming off a nice opening-day start. He logged six innings of shutout ball in that one, striking out six batters.
Hellickson and the Phillies will head to New York to face the Mets this weekend, and he’s scheduled to get the Sunday start. That makes Hellickson a very nice low-end pickup for those in need of an extra pitching arm.

Joe Panik, 2B, San Francisco Giants: The Giants dropped their third game to the Brewers yesterday, which denied them the sweep. Panik went 0-for-3 in that one, but for those fantasy owners looking for a middle infielder he’s deserving of a shot.
Panik posted a 3-for-9 line with two runs and a solo homer over his first two games, and he should thrive in the Giants lineup this year. He’ll be at home against the Dodgers in what should be a great series this weekend.

Desmond Jennings, OF, Tampa Bay Rays: Outfielder is as deep a position as ever this season in fantasy, and as such there’s plenty of talent at the lower end. Jennings is one such target; he posted a 1-for-4 effort against Toronto in the finale yesterday, scoring his third run of the year.
Jennings is a deep league/daily league option, and you’ll have to check his status regularly, but he’s been solid for Tampa so far and should continue to bring in hits against the Orioles this weekend.
