Fantasy Baseball Update 4/21/16: Key Matchups This Weekend
2016-04-20 11:00:00 EDT
It’s Thursday, so that means we fantasy baseball owners can start looking forward to the big weekend matchups in the MLB. That said, let’s take a closer look at some of the notable waiver wire plays out there and see if anyone’s right for your lineup.
Erasmo Ramirez, SP/RP, Tampa Bay Rays: Let’s start things out on the mound today and check out Ramirez. He’s come out of the bullpen to now get the starting gig in the series opener tomorrow against the Yankees.
Ramirez carries a 1.42 ERA with a 0.63 WHIP thus far. He’s also got three wins and 11 strikeouts. He’s a nice low-end pickup.
Robbie Ray, SP, Arizona Diamondbacks: Ray is getting a lot of attention as a starting pitcher add these days, thanks to a six-inning victory with eight strikeouts and no earned in San Francisco during his last outing.
Ray has been pretty darn good so far, with a 1.96 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP overall. This could be a breakout year for him, and he’s available in over 90 percent of leagues ahead of his Sunday start against the Pirates.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C, Detroit Tigers: Fantasy owners in need of a backstop have frequently been looking to Saltalamacchia this season. Heading into yesterday’s matchup, he’d homered in three straight games with six RBI and six hits in that span. He bagged a hit and two more runs yesterday.
Saltalamacchia is a stellar low-end catcher add right now, just don’t expect him to maintain this sort of form all season. He should still get plenty of use against the Indians this weekend, however.
Jake Lamb, 3B, Arizona Diamondbacks: Back down to Arizona we go to check out hot-corner man Lamb. He bagged an RBI triple in game two of the SF series this week, which gave him five hits with two runs, a homer and four RBI in three games.
Lamb has had his moments of ineptitude on the stat sheet, but overall has played well. If you’re stuck for a 3B ahead of the Pirates series he’s not a bad look.

Melvin Upton, OF, San Diego Padres: It’s been a pretty decent week for Upton, who is serving deep-league owners well. In a span of four games starting with the Arizona series, he posted six hits, two runs, a homer, three RBI and three stolen bases.
We’re still looking at a deep add/sleeper proposition here, but Upton seems to have some value in that capacity. If he can keep the strikeouts low, he might prove useful against the Cardinals this weekend.
